Amazing! Man, Herb could play some Jazz. Great Bass and drum solo too!

I met him for the first time in the late 70's when he was paired with Barney Kessel in a club in Dayton, Ohio. He played a lot like my teacher so I gravitated to him. He was the one who started my jazz excursion and I am forever grateful. I have been going back through these old videos and picking up the tunes to put in my sets as tribute to his influence on me.

I saw him in ‘84, with the great Barney Kessel. It was a brilliant straight-ahead jazz gig. After the interval they brought on Marion Montgomery. What more could one ask for?

Riff at 2:11 and 2:39 is one of my favorite riffs ever. I've heard ryo Kawasaki use it, I think he was the first (I'm probably wrong). I've actually never heard it used once, that's how good it is! If anyone has heard it anywhere else, let me know.

Herb Ellis was a grand master in the jazz realm! This is a great jazz standard,,, but in my opinion the sound is slightly dry,, and either a rhythm guitarist, to supply the needed depth and fill the holes,,, or,,, keyboards! I guess I'm spoiled lol,, I listen mostly to ~Mr. Joe Pass~ who accompanied the great Oscar Peterson, and routinely would play all 3 parts ,,,, the chords, the bass line(s), and the lead melody ...................... at the same time~!~

Anyone know if that's a ES-165, or an ES-175?
@LennyraptorLP5 жыл бұрын
I guess its an 165. As far as i know the only difference is that the 165 has only one PU, just like the guitar in the video.
@glevumguy78504 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure, though I’m leaning toward a 175 due to the tailpiece. But the ES175 CES has one pickup, the ES175D CES is the two pickup model. The ‘D’ designates double pick-up. I’ve played both the 165 and the 175 and I believe the 175 is the better guitar. Herb was the player that sold me on jazz guitar, back in the 60’s. I believe his playing, with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown, at the Canadian ‘Stratford Shakespearean Festival’ resulted in the best guitar trio jazz recording ever made.
