August 15th in Italy is Ferragosto, the day that commemorates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. The various Christian denominations diverge on the question of Mary's death. On another note, the term Ferragosto derives from Feriae Augusti or Augustin rest, which indicated a holiday established by the 1st Roman Emperor Augustus in 18 BC.
