I'm from the Calabrian side of the bridge (not exactly from Villa, but 15 minutes north) and people on both sides are VERY fiercely divided about the project. This is more an ideological battle than one about the structure itself. I am leftist and hate the governement, but the ones who oppose the bridge are the people on my political side because the one who really wanted the bridge more than anyone else was Berlusconi: so, it's an ideological opposition to the right which want the bridge and they come up with the weirdest arguments to avoid the bridge construction, like the protection of birds which might collide with the bridge. Yet I also need to mention two typical traits of Italians: extreme whataboutism and even more extreme pessimism. In the first case, people appeal to other urgencies like education, healthcare and local infrastructure assuming that the money spent on the bridge would be taken away from these areas; in the second one, poverty in the South has been leading people for more than a century to believe that they are not worthy enough to deserve big infrastructures or businesses, and they are very selfish to such a point that the concept of "public good" does not exist and their life is just about protecting their small garden and gaining even the smallest advantage at the expence of the community. In this sense, there's a saying in Calabrian which recites 'E chi mi ndi futti a mmia', which in English translates as 'I don't give a fuck about it'.

It's depressing to see the situation in the southernmost part of our country. All the issues that are, by definition, deeply ingrained in our society explode there due to geography. The steep mountains of Calabria and the sea around Sicily isolate them from the rest of the country and cut them off from many trade routes, making them poor and underdeveloped, prone to fail from the start in any initiative the people living there might take. What the community there needs are infrastructures that link places to places in an efficient and effective way. The bridge should serve as the capstone that coronates a much bigger project aimed at revolutionize transportation in those two region. Of you do _only_ the bridge though, you won't solve much. My fear is that the government will start this building and, provided it gets completed and not abandoned midway, they won't upgrade the rest of the infrastructure of the regions, making the bridge kinda useless

Né marketing, perché metteranno il viaggiatore di fronte all’ovvia scelta: - ponte 50,60,70€ (5 minuti) - traghetto 80€ (1 ora). PS: tunnel del monte bianco: costruito 60 anni fa… completamente ripagata la costruzione … costa ancora 50€ a passaggio! Non considero la ricostruzione dopo incendio perché aveva messo mano l’assicurazione.

Il ponte permettera di fare attraversare molti più mezzi in molto meno tempo rispetto ai traghetti, il che ti fa capire che proporzionalmente possono mantenere dei prezzi molto più competitivi. E non ha senso da parte tua fare una stima che va dai 50 ai 70 euro dato che non c'è nessun dato ufficiale al riguardo

Lasciamo stare perché ormai "il danno è fatto", il problema è il nome infantile che hanno scelto che non capisco. Infine, le marche che ho citato vendono al grande pubblico, per cui il nome è importante, mentre la Impregilo aveva a che fare con appalti fatti da grandi aziende se non da stati. it will never be done: In the executive project it is explicitly indicated that the stays (the ropes that hold the bridge up and complete the span) must be tested with specific machinery before being mounted on the bridge. To test stays approximately 5km long each, you need a machine the size of a football field and 40m high. This machinery does not exist, it must first be designed, built and then used to test the stays. So it will take at least 10 years just to have this tool operational and only then will we start building the bridge. Furthermore, the cost of the machinery was not even considered.

A bridge to replace a ferry might sound like a good idea. The real problem starts when you actually get to Sicily. To connect Messina with the rest of the major cities would be a lot more important than speeding up by 20 minutes the crossing of the strait. To get to Trapani, on the opposite side of the island, takes 3 and a half to 4 hours in the best case. Sicily desperately needs modern highways first, like the rest of Italy (at a fraction of the cost of the construction of a mega bridge across one of the areas with the highest seismic risk in the whole Mediterranean) Then eventually a bridge, but mafia still rules over there...

Osmangazi suspension bridge in Turkiye is over the Gulf of Izmit (The Marmara Sea) and built over the North Anatolian Fault itself which is much more dangerous than the fault line between Sicily and Italy main land. And one of the Engineering company was an Italian company. Suspension Bridge on a fault line is not a big problem as long as they built correctly.

During the broadcast he draws the major works to be carried out on a map of Italy. Among them, there is the Bridge over the Strait, a symbol of the relaunch of Sicily. “Il ponte di Messina questa volta si farà, lo garantiamo. Porremo la prima pietra nel 2004, e lo concluderemo entro il 2020” Silvio Berlusconi, 2002. In 2010, Impregilo finally delivered the final design of the bridge. Another problem you don't mention is that in southern Italy people get hired because they are the cousin or the friend of a manager, not because they are qualified. The government recently requested a study report because they were worried that no valid studies had been performed. In fact, the report contained garbage, it was published by a local news agency that got hold of it. Additionally, they screwed the height of the bridge table (too low for higher ships), thus blocking about 15% of sea traffic.

I took the damned Danish ferries in summer 1988 and there was NOTHING to like about them, they slowed our trip down considerably, especially since the first one was allegedly full and could not take us, so we had to wait at some DESOLATE spot, of ZERO tourist interest, to take the next boxy, slow and ugly ferry.

This project was detailed completely in 1992. The Japanese studied this project to make their own (half the length) Akashi bridge which they completed in 1998. The bridge can absolutely be built as planned. All the rest is politics. So ignore any news on feasibility. The only point being that until recently it made no sense as there was no real highways on either side

As for my thoughts, I don't see where Italy will be able to acquire the funds to do this, though I also cannot understand why it will be as costly as they say too... but considering everything here in Italy is over-budget and late, I think this could be a huge mistake that will just end up as a tourist attraction in 2150. Lastly, I have concern about only building a bridge to 7.5 magnitude earthquake. We should learn the lesson from Fukushima--go well beyond what you think you may encounter, because nature will surprise you.

because it's the length of the span between the pillars taken into consideration, not the total length, the bridge in Greece has a length between the spans of approximately 500 metres, the Messina's bridge is 3.3 kilometers
