Hi Steve..I'm just an Italian guy passing by and I truly feel the need to thank you for showing the world, in such an elegant manner, that Italy isn't just Rome, Florence and Venice. You should be the role model for every single tourist in Europe. Please stay the way you are.

Thank you Rick for this fabulous overview of my region!! I'd like to share other places that it is worth visiting in Veneto: - Treviso, a very charming town 15 miles far from Venice; it has a beautiful historical center and flowing water canals quite similar to Venice. It is also the best place to drink good prosecco. - Riviera del Brenta: the Brenta river was a very important connection between Padua and Venice in old time and along the riverside lot of beautiful noble venetian villas were built. It is possible to enjoy this place by a boat tour. - Vicenza the city where the famous architect Andrea Palladio worked: the teatro Olimpico is one of his most representative masterpiece - Este, Montagnana and Cittadella are three little towns famous for their well preserved medieval city walls - Asolo a medieval hill town. From the tower of the medieval fortress it is possible to appreciate a fantastic view of the hilly landscape that characterize this part of Veneto. - Belluno, Feltre and Bassano del Grappa, another historical towns placed in the mountain region of Veneto near the Dolomites; Bassano del Grappa is also known for grappa: the tipical liquor of Veneto

Ah, how lovely! Thank you! I was there....40 years ago...what fun it was to have our little son--3 1/2 years old--with us. That certainly brought out the Italians love of children! Ravenna was magic. I lived in Padova for a year as an exchange student! It was the fall2019/spring2020 semesters, and both semester were equally amazing. We decided to stay there, instead of go back home to Norway, despite our government begging us to come back when the corona hit. We stayed inside for 2 months, only going out 200m from our house to shop groceries, feeling like we were in a police controlled warzone. The payoff however was when Veneto finally opened for travel within the county. We traveled to Verona and got to see the balcony of Romeo and Juliet completely alone! We also got to take pictures of only ourselves at Piazza San Marco in Venice! Moral of the story is when something feels important, like this pandemic lockdown did, you should say "yes please" and go aong with the flow without fear. Just thought I'd sare :)

This episode showcases a great point he made in his talk on Italy travel skills. 80% of Italy has little to no tourism, but all of it has ancient history, captivating scenery, and superlative art. Plus, just as everything sounds nicer when spoken in Italian, sights which look gritty and/or uninviting in a young and new country like America somehow look nicer in Italy. A good case in point is my father's hometown of Gaeta. You will see a heavier industrial port and its attendant facilities, but they will still be sun drenched and have an excellent view of the coast. But there, and in neighboring Formia, you'll also find nice beaches, old churches, a fort overlooking the sea, and other sights which are relatively uncrowded thanks to massive tourist crush absorbed by the principal cities. These are the places that Italian citizens go when they want a weekend at the beach without the huge crowds, and are well worth a look, as are much of the surrounding countryside up in the hills.
