I have been to Rome twice and I have never noticed smells but that is probably because I have been in Autumn and Spring. I am shocked that you went to Greece and Italy in mid summer to be honest. Eeeeek! You should have done your other UK trips whilst the weather was 25-30 degrees and then hit South Europe in October which would be 25 -30 degrees. Oh well. Hope you had fun though!
