In this episode, I ride to the north of Togo, and cross the border into Benin there. A full day on tarmac and it's quite different from what I encounter on dirt roads. Many bad accidents with trucks and countless broken down trucks on the road. Riding on tarmac here seems a lot more dangerous then riding on dirt roads! The north part of Togo and Benin are very similar to each other. The people still have traditional Tata Somba houses here and scarification is still commonly practiced.

Noraly, if I were the Minister of Education in my country, your videos would be part of the school curriculum. Your videos serve as a basis for studying geography, art, culture, geology, behavior, amazing people and so on. The way you react to situations is also a school of life. Wow, coming from a typical Indian village and growing up in there, I see so many similarities here and in my hometown. In fact we had exactly same kind of toilets. In fact till I was 10 years old, we did not even had toilets. Left hometown at 16 for higher studies and now at 37 settled in a major-city, I terribly miss the village life. There was a slowness and tranquility that was present there. And being a kid, it was a worry-free time.

I'm mentally riding alongside you, seeing all the wonders you see, hiking into forests and jungles that--due to my 71 years and small income--I will never get to experience. I know that I'm not alone in sharing this feeling. I just want to thank you for opening the world to those like me and everyone else, for approaching each new day with a positive attitude and a generous smile, even when the going gets rough. I am a day late watching this video but woke very early before daylight to make my coffee and cozy up to travel with you Noraly. I am so glad you ventured north to explore and to take us through those special houses and shared a little about the people who live in northern Benin and Togo. As we go along with you these past few months I am getting a much better sense of the vastness and diversity of Africa both in geography and culture. It is a continent that I think must be hard to really know… maybe even if you live there. There is also an impressive weaving of old and new in ways that are both seamless like the houses beside each other and then abrupt, like the many transport truck accidents. This, even as a distant viewer, creates an unfamiliar and continuous uncertainty that feels more dramatic at times. You navigate these situations well such as the border crossing and police check points and when you find yourself with only mangos, cookies, and peanuts for lunch and dinner after having had three bananas for breakfast. I can only imagine that, at times, these situations must be extremely taxing and more of a challenge than they appear. You have a brave spirit and I am grateful to be able to join you from a distance as you explore.

20:44 ...I wonder what the materials used to build those wonderful shelters ? a round hut of beaten mud with a conical roof of thatch.. Sloping roofs of palm or straw thatch are more usual materials. Along the coastal lagoons, houses are often built on stilts. The main entrance is always located on the west side, facing sunset during the winter solstice. Many homes are made from sun-dried mud bricks and mud plaster, with straw roofs. The sun bakes the mud so well that it does not get destroyed in the rain.

Looking at an early shot of Benin I was thinking it's like a cross between Utah and Iowa and boom two or three shots and there is a cliff wall similar to Utah. Amazing Africa.

Very Interesting tour, Noraly. The similarity of the house construction in Togo and Benin is not surprising. A regional norm before the 'modern' nations were established. Also, not surprising to see so many truck accidents and breakdowns with the way they overload the cargo. Your fantastic drone views brings to mind just how much of the wonders of nature we ground-based creatures do not get to see. Be Well Safe Travels 🙏❤🏍🤠

Wow, Noraly, no words on what you are doing by going to all these different places where you have been and all the experiences that you must have after all. One thing that I can say is that you must have a very human way to trust people, I think you were born to do this, and I really hope that one day, as the woman that you are, you learn what shape you have given to your heart and to know too that, that is a beautiful capacity for a human to have....❤

The beans you saw are known as locust beans. It is boiled in high temperature for some eight hours to make it possible to remove the seed's hard shells. The seeds undergo yet further processing including fermentation and are ultimately used for soup seasoning.

The guides you've used these last couple of episodes have been such a great addition to the depth of your (and our) understanding of the local culture and traditions....it's awesome that you've been able to find such ones to show us all around! Interesting too how the scarification doesn't seem to 'alter' one's appearance so much, but rater serves as an identifier! Cheers, and ride safe!
