I'm so glad she is exploring historical sites even more. I've found some interesting facts to devour on this place. Built about five kms apart, in the cliffs above the Yeşildere stream, the Manazan Cave City and the Town of Taşkale are two related and yet very different sites. Both are essentially famous for their unique rock-cut chambers, set into the cliffs of soft, porous stone, however, while Manazan is a city of grand halls, chimneys, winding passages, and churches, Taşkale is known for its hundreds of tiny chambers cut into the cliff above the village. One of these small chambers opens into another passageway and on into another set of halls known as the “Burial Square” and the “Castle of Sand”. Very little is known for sure about the Manazan cave settlement. When a cave is expanded, traces of the old are chipped away and lost making it difficult to know how long these caves have been used for. It is thought that early Christians settled in this remote and sheltered place to escape the persecution of the Romans. Christianity spread quickly and early in the area with the cities of Derbe, Lystra, and Iconium (modern Konya), being nearby cities visited by St Paul and his companions. When Christianity was legalized and eventually adopted as the state religion the need for secrecy and protection stopped, making the caves at Manazan less important. However, with the beginning of Arab raiders in the area and later with the arrival of the Muslim Turks, Christians once again took refuge in cave settlements like Manazan.

Same here, I came in 2003 and decided to settle down. That changed my life totally. I was kind of back in time, when people have time for each other and family is most import of all. Second most are friends and enjoy life together with other humans. In Turkey "time" is not an element they care much about, like we do. If a Turk must use time he says "I will come 3", which actually means "I will not come earlier than 3". Sometimes it can be hours later. 😅 When you are born, you immediately enter your first year of life. So, do not get surprised that someone here will say that you are one year older than YOU know, since the day you were born actually count as one instead of zero. ❤😅 Most of us that feel at home here stay forever.... 😊 Where I live, we are 48 different nations that found Turkey as a new home. 🎉

Her interpreter also told her that those cave/homes were built on top of earlier cave/homes that dated back many thousands of years. (12?) Christianity is only 2024 years old so your assumption that Turkey was Christian is most probably incorrect. Edit: I will stand corrected in the fact that Turkey (Anatolia) was in fact a majority Christian country before the Ottomans, who themselves maintained a high rate of Christianity in the amalgamated States of Anatolia until the later stages of the Ottoman control. 🥴😬.

Fantastic day! Agriculture started near that region about 10,000 BC. Those cave dwellings you went into are quite typical of the period. Those narrow vertical passageways were easily defended, protecting the occupants from attack. The dwellings were much cooler than the desert, as you noted. Food and water were kept so they could survive a siege for some time. Not unlike the Native American dwellings in the Southwestern US. They built in alcoves with steep climbs so they could pull up their ropes or ladders and be safer from attack. You have me wanting to go to Turkey now!

What an interesting day! Absolutely fascinating to see the village built in 7000BC and its history. The pool in the volcano was unexpected. Your lungs and Frankie’s lungs were getting a workout today. Ladder climbing in the dark is quite scary but your excitement was so good to see. It’s so interesting to see how the rooms were carved out and all the tunnel work. So glad you were able to find someone to tell you about the place. Such sweet people you meet!

Terrific episode. Drone view was exciting terrain with Roman and ancient peoples activities. Cave walls were very straight, vertical, perfect squares. Is the rock volcanic a bit soft for easier digging? Tuff or agglomerate?

Noraly, look up GOBEKLI TEPE in Turkiye. It's 9,500 BC and is much, much bigger than the place you visited. It's truly a mystery and proves modern human existed long before we originally thought.

Manazan Mağaraları - Karaman Manazan Mağaraları Yeşildere (İbrala) Taşkale (Kızıllar) Köyleri arasında uzanan Yeşildere Vadisi'nin doğusunda, Karaman-Yeşildere Taşkale yolunun kenarındadır. Karaman’a uzaklığı 40 kilometredir. Mağaralar, içerisinde kil oranı yüksek kireçtaşı arazide, yüksek bir kaya kütlesine tamamen insan eli ile oyulmuş beş katlı toplu meskenler halindedir. İlk iki kat doğu batı yönünde hücre şeklinde birçok odacıktan oluşmaktadır. Doğudan ve batıdan vadiyi kontrol edebilecek stratejik konuma sahiptir. Ortada bulunan yüksek kaya kütlesine oyulan diğer katlar yörede sırasıyla Kum Kale, At Meydanı ve Ölüler Meydanı olarak adlandırılmıştır. Mağaraların ön cephesi doğal olaylar sonucu tahrip olduğundan günümüzde belirgin bir girişi yoktur. Birinci katta oyuntular şeklinde bir çok mezar odaları vardır. Bu katta doğudan batıya doğruya sıralanan odalardan bazılarının şapel olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bunların içerisinde bazı geometrik şekillerin ve freskoların izleri bulunmaktadır.Şapellerin en büyüğü doğu bölümde yer almaktadır. Üstü beşik tonozlu olup yamaçta yer alan güney cephe doğal olaylar sonucu yıkılmıştır. Mağaraların ne zaman oyulduğunu kesin olarak ortaya koyacak veriler olmamakla birlikte buradan ele geçen küçük buluntulardan mağaraların Bizans Devri'nde 6 ve 7'nci yüzyıllarda oyulduğu ve yerleşildiği anlaşılmaktadır. Mağaraların hem güvenlik açısından hem de killi kireç taşının ısı ve nemi sabit tutması özelliği nedeniyle oyulmuş ve kullanılmış olduğu tahmin edilmektedir.

It has been determined that some of the rooms lined up from east to west on this floor are chapels. There are traces of some geometric shapes and frescoes in these. The largest of the chapels is located in the eastern section. It has a barrel vault and the southern facade on the slope was destroyed by natural events. Although there is no data to determine exactly when the caves were carved, it is understood from the small findings obtained here that the caves were carved and settled in the 6th and 7th centuries during the Byzantine Period. It is estimated that the caves were carved and used both for safety and because of the clayey limestone's ability to maintain heat and humidity.
