Sometimes we can love the idea of an item. I had a leather jacket and never wore it so sold it. Then I regretted it, so re bought the exact same one off ebay after a long time searching for it.... still dont wear it now.

That's so true! I definitely have some very positive memories attached to a number of these items, and I think what makes me really want to track a few of them down is that they used to be among my most worn pieces (and I can imagine myself getting that same level of wear from them again, even now). I suppose the real test is whether any of them actually pop up on the pre loved market haha! XD

I feel the same way! I got a beautiful Rag & Bone buttery soft black leather jacket. Never wear it, and I think it is because it is too heavy to be worn indoors at the office. It is more outerwear. I live in a warmer climate with a short winter and don’t really need many jackets. I like jackets that can be a layering piece to be worn at work. I may part with it this winter.

I don't like Valentino rockstuds because I often see it on influencers and bloggers and after awhile it just seems basic. I have to say you have the ability to make items like the Rockstuds and the Neverfull look understated, fresh, and stylish. It makes me see them in a new light and helps me see how they might work in my own wardrobe 😁
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
Haha I can totally appreciate that as I've often been turned off by items just by the sheer number of bloggers or influencers seen toting them. Sometimes, it can also be hard to distinguish whether you actually like an item or have just come around to it due to over saturation. And thank you, that's such a kind comment!! Hope you're staying safe xx

I have those exact Valentino kitten heels. The color is brownish. I was never a fan at first but the perfect blush color drew me in. They are the only heel I can tolerate. They can be worn with jeans or a gown. I get a ton of compliments every time I wear them. I plan on wearing them to my daughter's wedding. I would never part with them.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's the colour! Honestly been my favourite nude hue they have done over the years and nothing's come close. I'd bought them with the intention of wearing them when I got married but they didn't really go with the dress, plus I think I would have been devastated if I'd damaged them in some way. Went with a patent style from Dior in the end which was much more practical (in case I spilled anything on them). That sounds lovely, wearing them to your daughter's wedding

Haha. Don’t reminisce Jaime!! We live and we learn right. This journey to a more curated closet isn’t all smooth sailing! Regret, panic buying, breaking shopping fasts the list goes on. it’s all a learning curve and something that takes a while to master! Regretting letting go of pieces was something I struggled with especially because most of the pieces in my wardrobe I do really love for one reason or another. But to be honest if we were getting the wear and joy out of these pieces, really, I think we would not have let them go in the first place, right! I fully have the “ones that got away” though 😂 I held onto to my hope sweater although, haven’t reached for it yet this autumn. I have the dark grey. It has avoided the declutter pile this season...... I’m getting better at this. When I learned to enjoy the journey the destination didn’t feel so important anymore. Ahaha. So deep the musings of a closet. 🤣

Hahaha so true! You live and learn through your actions and mistakes, and we are constantly evolving and changing tastes. Sometimes even going full circle - something that's happened to me many times I feel like. I almost went to wear my black Hope sweater today, but opted for a different one just as I'm trying to cycle through my knitwear (and I'd wore it last week). The dark grey is lovely I have to say. I hate to think how many hours I've spent contemplating my wardrobe. I need a new hobby LOL XD

I think all the reasons you listed (the ones you remembered) for getting rid of the items are completely valid: it's obvious they weren't a good fit for you/your wardrobe at the time. I hope you're not too hard on yourself now that your taste/life situation is different. Also, it might be good to reflect on whether or not nostalgia has you looking at some of those items through rose tinted glasses. Seems like you could end up having similar issues (especially regarding care) all over again were you to reintroduce the items into your wardrobe. I would also think a good many times about the Rockstuds - are you absolutely positive you would get a good cost per wear out of them even at a preloved price? Would they feel equally special now - would you only want to wear them to special occasions, and if so, are there enough of these events lined up in your calendar to warrant a new pair for those situations? Personally, I've been keeping score of my outfits over the past year and I've worn heels (not counting my ankle boots) only a handful of times, so putting a huge amount of money towards something in that category would be a complete waste of money in my books. As to whether or not I've regretted decluttering: no. I have regretted purchasing items. Getting rid of those (and other, worn out) items has in comparison felt rather liberating.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
When I think about the bigger ticket items, and the reasons I sold them, I know the funds from those sales went towards creating some pretty special memories so I can't be upset about that - those things I will remember forever (our wedding day and honeymoon

Great video. I regret getting rid of a short black leather jacket. I did not know that about viscose. Would you consider doing a video on fabric types? Pros and cons, sustainability, and how they last over time. I am trying to wear more natural and long wearing fabrics. Thanks.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Linda! Ahh a similar regret to my first one. That's definitely a great idea - for me, there's quite a few reasons why I like to avoid viscose (also known as rayon). It's a man made fibre created from tree pulp, but has quite a chemical intensive process - which can be damaging to the environment. And as I mentioned, it has a tendency to shrink when washed. For those reasons, I prefer to avoid it but sometimes get sucked in by a pretty design. The "pros" are that it has a nice silky feel and good drape, plus I believe it's breathable. But definitely a good idea for a video, thanks for suggesting it! x

It's more that I wish I'd held onto them; in part, I suspect this is because they all had really positive memories associated with them. I'm not usually a super sentimental person, but becoming a mum has definitely changed that. You look so nice in everything you wear! I personally no longer rebuy items I’ve culled even if I feel regret unless it’s to buy a different color, size or material. In my experience items I miss are never as pivotal as my memories make them out to be. I say this from years of experience (I’m 51) of pulling out items from storage after weight loss, repurchasing items or buying too many of similar items. Instead of focusing and hunting for the specific item I would instead sit down and write out what hole I feel it would fill in my wardrobe, what I would wear it with and on what occasions I would wear it. I would also consider other similar pieces I have and whether or not I use those. Sometimes I find I have similar items that I’m not wearing and I realize while I love that type of item (say an expensive embellished shoe) I don’t actually wear it much. Then I would consider other items to fill that hole rather than focusing on the culled item only. Especially with clothing as our bodies do not remain exactly the same through life even if the weight is similar, especially if you’ve had a gain and then lost again. For example the Acne jacket could still feel boxy if you did rebuy but if you try another oversized moto in a different length or shape it may achieve the silhouette that you are craving. Not pointing out the Acne as it sounds fabulous but just giving an example 😊

Thank you Tania you're too kind. Some of those photos were truly a blast from the past (talking 5 years + older)! That's such an interesting perspective and take on it - I do think that there's so much truth to this. I've been feeling quite sentimental lately (not sure if this is a side effect of having a baby now.. haha!), and was browsing through old travel photos which really sparked the idea for this video. Each of the items I mentioned does have a positive connection to it (for me), which I think plays into that whole reason behind me missing it. I like what you've said about going for different colours or understanding what it was about that piece that you *actually* miss (and if it realistically works for you). Some food for thought, that's for sure! :)
@blessedbee14 жыл бұрын
I have done some ruthless culling over the years and there are definitely pieces I regret parting ways with. Now I'm much more careful when it comes to decluttering my wardrobe and I really don't mind putting something away for several years as long as it's a classic and something I have really loved and would love to wear again. I actually think this is much more sustainable than getting rid of a lot of items just because you haven't worn something in a year or two - I have put away shoes/clothes for five years and started wearing them again with great joy as my own taste and trends have changed. I think my number one decluttering regret at the moment is a black BCBGMAXAZRIA wrap dress with 3/4 length sleeves - I had it for years, loved it intensely, dressed it up and down, and it was truly the perfect black wrap dress, but I gained a little weight at uni and it didn't fit me quite right towards the end so I let it go. Right after uni I lost weight and was back to my usual size in no time and has been ever since. I'm still struggling to replace that dress and would love to find it preloved, but I'm not holding my breath. As for your decluttering regrets, I'm shocked you got rid of the Rockstuds. They might not be super trendy anymore, but I would say they have become quite iconic and something like a modern classic. I think you would get more wear out of them if you got them in black or a darker colour, however, I really love the colour you had.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
I love that approach, and agree, it's definitely a much more sustainable option, particularly if you have the storage space. I hope you're able to come across something similar, otherwise you may like to consider getting a seamstress to make one for you. It's a route I'm thinking about for the KW top, but made in a different fabrication so it's easy to launder. Ohh I know! They are such a gorgeous shoe. Reflecting on it further, I have a feeling I sold them before our honeymoon in the Maldives, which would make sense - that was an expensive holiday but worth every penny for the fabulous memories. Coincidentally, I used to have the 100mm height in the black patent which were gorgeous, but it cemented the idea that the higher version wasn't right for me. A darker option probably would be more practical though. Not rushing into repurchasing at the moment, but will definitely be keeping my eye on the pre loved market for them xx

I feel like you just took us on a journey down memory lane. I first found you when you were doing capsule wardrobes and "really focused on the numbers" of items as you said. Its been really cool to see your style evolve and I think the takeaway from what I can see is to invest in really good fabrics that are not dry clean only and can be cared for well so they can be worn for years to come. I think you know yourself better now and if you want the rock studs again you can invest in them. I track how much I wear things and also sometimes put things aside to see if I miss them. I also have to be careful with my fantasy self too. I also have a checklist for purchasing things. Its important to learn from our mistakes and I also would love to see how you shop pre owned that would be a cool video!
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
It really was with this one, wasn't it? Oh gosh and even before that, I think I was much more obsessed. I used to write lists of all the core items I wanted in my "perfect" wardrobe, and try and whittle it down - not quite sure what I thought I was getting out of that as it resulted in me parting ways with a lot of items I loved. I totally agree with those points, good quality materials go a long long way, and it's why I've always been happy to spend a little extra. I think the thing I've found trickiest is battling with that idea of my fantasy self - I have often shopped for her rather than for "me", if you know what I mean. That's a good idea, and something I'm planning to do moving forward (rather than having such a cut throat culling method).

I got rid of one pair of white 100% linen wide-leg trousers since they became too small for me. I also have the black version which I saved. Three or four years later, I lost weight and the black ones fit so well and I started missing my white ones. It was a really thick durable linen. I converted my black linen trousers to a cropped version with a hint of flare, which is so flattering, which makes me miss my white ones even more. I love your a little oversized black leather jacket, wish i bought it.

I looked out a lot of clothes to de clutter a few months ago but hadn't got around to doing anything with them yet. Then I bought a white shirt that was a bit sheer and I realised I was about to get rid of a silk Everlane cami in a pale mushroom colour that was too close to my skin tone and too sheer to wear alone but would be perfect to layer under something white. I had never considered that it would be a great layering piece, I always just saw that it couldn't be worn alone. I don't remember having any problems with viscose but I try to actively avoid buying 'dry clean only' clothes because I know I will never dry clean them.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
That's fortunate! And great that you were finally able to find a way to wear that cami :) Another commenter mentioned this, but if viscose hasn't been pre-washed then it does have a tendency to shrink. Safe to say the items I've bought haven't been pre-washed hence the shrinkage (it's happened with a Faithfull and Ref dress I owned too). So generally I avoid it. Yeah and I'm the same with dry clean only. It's hard to find a good dry cleaner too! x

I have a lot of viscose pieces. I wash them all in a washing machine temp. 40C on the synthetic mode so rotation is on 800. They tend to get shrunken in the wash and completely relax after air drying or ironing. It probably depends on the type of viscose but I would not wash them in higher temperature or rotation and I believe that the rotation it's what causes the shrinkage.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
I do all of our washing on a 30C setting so quite "cool" - I think rotation is definitely part of it. That said, the two items I was specifically referring to, I hand washed in ice cold water and they shrunk a full size! Another person commented that viscose needs to be pre-shrunk otherwise that can happen, which must have been the reason in my case. At any rate, it's a fabric I tend to avoid just as I've had so many issues with it in the past. Happy it works for others though! :)

I really enjoyed this video! And look forward to your anti haul with much anticipation. It’s very fascinating and helpful to hear your dissection of your actions and reflections upon how your style has evolved and your needs have shifted. I think the Rockstuds would look really nice on you, which I’m surprised to say as I’m not a fan of the style usually, I find them so overdone. But your silhouettes are usually more streamlined or relaxed/softened, so I think the shape of the shoes and the studs could go really well to add just a hint of sharpness. And we all know you love a good shoe 😛 Plus you’re not one to wear overly branded or ‘trendy’ of the moment items, so I can’t imagine you looking like you got devoured by the Instagram trendy influencer behemoth, which is what I associate the Valentino rockstuds and Gucci anything with 😂 I haven’t decluttered anything I’ve regretted yet. Although maybe I’ll have regrets if I manage to force myself to cull my things as I’m finally preparing to move, and there’s not much space in Sydney rentals eek ahah.

Thanks Jess! And yes I need to double check my video schedule that I've planned - this is a reminder of why I loved doing videos twice a week. I have too many ideas and not enough time to film (and edit) them with a little one haha! I think the rock studs are a polarising one, and I can completely appreciate that viewpoint. What blogger doesn't own a pair, it feels like?! I always figure that the mark of a good staple is when you love it, just for the fact that you love it (rather than being "coerced" into liking it from sheer exposure on social media). I don't really follow anyone who wears them aside from a couple UK bloggers so that may be a reason why I'm still so enamoured by them. Well, that, and I just think that they're a beautiful shoe that do *all* the talking - something you know I love as my outfits are often quite basic. Do you know when you'll be moving? Must be hard with COVID. Some friends of ours bought a house and move in a few weeks, and I think they're still not sure if they'll be moving their furniture themselves or with the help of removalists. And you never know, you may get lucky with your flat! x

Thanks for another great video. There is only one item that I regret donating: it was a cognac-brown, very high quality blazer, with chocolate-brown suede collar and trim. It was beautiful, but had a straighter fit, it really just needed taking in at the waist. They just don’t make blazers like that anymore. I particularly miss the breathable rayon linings of those 90s blazers, the standard of the day, even better, silk linings weren’t impossible to find. I just can’t stand polyester, today’s standard, unfortunately. Younger women don’t usually get this, but when they go into early menopause, they will.

Hi!! Aww I LOVED that Karen walker frill top.. but I also know what you mean about viscose ugh. Another item I have always identified as being very “you” is the black proenza bag!
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
Ahh yes it was one of those items I just LOVED. I found I could wear it multiple times in Wellington before it needed to be dry-cleaned because the climate is quite cold, whereas here in Sydney, it's so warm in Spring/Summer that you can't really wear the same top two times in a row (at least, I wouldn't!). Maybe I can get one remade by a seamstress in a silk or cotton :) Oh my gosh that's a blast from the past. That was my every day bag for years! :)

Great video, thanks Jamie. I remember almost all those pieces and must confess to being shocked at seeing the black frill t-shirt included, knowing how much you loved it 🙂 !! The only thing I would hesitate to repurchase is the Rockstuds. They're really beautiful but as someone else said, every other fashion blogger seems to have a pair, and so they feel a bit obvious. Perhaps you could use your creative eye to spot a more unique alternative xx
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
Yes that was SUCH a favourite of mine - still is to this day, and it was truly the clothing care aspect that drove me to part ways with it. After reading through a number of the other comments, I'm starting to think it may be a good idea (with that piece anyway), to perhaps get a dressmaker to replicate it for me in a different fabric. Will see how I go! With the rock studs - their popularity doesn't bother me (especially as they aren't exactly a "trendy" shoe anymore). I've always thought the style was special. Not going to rush into anything though, that's for sure, and will of course be keeping my eye out should something better come along :) Hope you're keeping well! xx

I can see why you miss many of those pieces. When it works it can becomes a lifelong classic in our wardrobes. Note to myself, Viscose is a no go. This was great lesson. Sometimes we come across that bespoke garment that just works. Thanks for reminder to take pause. Can't wait to see you in the Swediish made sweater!

Oh definitely - and to me I feel like all those styles (perhaps with the exception of the shoes) are so classic, that they wouldn't feel out of place worn today. Probably another reason why I miss them so much! And coming up in this Thursday's video :D :D

I had to think about it a bit, so I don’t k ow if regret is the right sentiment, but I had this beautiful bulky ivory sweater that I always reached for, but I sold it because I felt it took up too much space in my drawer and made me look heavy. However, it was the perfect winter weight. My brother commented about it looking like a fisherman’s sweater and I guess I took it as an insult. I really ought to not care what others think.

Not wowed by anything you did sell apart from the acne leather jacket. Don’t spend money on things you are too scared to wear bc they might get damaged! But if you are looking for statement shoes the anine Bing Charlie boots might be a better and more durable option than the Chile ones! Only thing I regret selling is a pair of 2nd hand acne jeans, they were so comfortable, but Grey denim was out of fashion at the time so I sold them :(
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
For me, all the items have such positive memories attached and while many might not seem special, they were to me (and many were my most worn). The Acne jacket was such a splurge, and is still to this day the most amount of money I've ever spent on a single item of clothing! I know the AB boots you mean - I've never loved the silhouette from how I see it online, but maybe I need to try them on to get a real sense. They've had such lasting power! Were those the ones with the zipper at the back? I remember they had such a moment

I so understand your regret! I had a pair of stiff, cotton fabric, beige culottes. I regret to this day, giving them away. I did however, find a black pair recently, pre-loved, that are very similar. Jaime, what were you thinking regarding the rock studs and the Acne leather jacket? But, we do hope you can find these all again. Decluttering can be such a pain ;) Good luck on finding those that are meant to be back in your wardrobe. xox

I'm so glad to know I'm not alone - I can completely appreciate why some people are very hesitant to let things go at all. My mum was like that (though her closet was fabulous!). Ahhh I know! In saying that, the funds from the sale of both items went towards making some very special memories so it's nice to remember that. I'm not going to be too hasty about adding anything back into my closet, but definitely will be keeping my eyes peeled :)

Another comment is regarding laundering your knits: I machine wash all my knits (including cashmere) in cold water and even put them a few minutes in the dryer in the delicate mode before finally letting them dry properly flat....
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
I do this with a handful of my cashmere knits, but generally I'm not willing to risk it - I've had some disasters in the past using that method (not the dryer part - just the washing machine in a delicates bag). I suspect it probably has something to do with the washing machine we have. So glad it works for you, sounds so fuss free!! :D

Tell me all about those regrets! I'm living abroad and don't want to expand my wadrobe too much, during study time I decided to get rid of a beautiful orange maxi dress together with other pieces that I considered too "formal" for my lifestyle back then, and now that I start working I feel regret and think of them oftenly.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
That's one thing I always considered when parting with some of my more formal workwear items. When I began working in television, our dress code was much more relaxed (pretty similar to what I wear daily now TBH), and I didn't have a need for those items. I'm sure I'll eventually end up working in a formal setting again like that, so hoping I won't regret parting ways with some of the more classic workwear staples I used to love and wear often! x

Watching your videos makes me realize the long term benefits of investing in more expensive pieces. You were able to sell them even when you were done with them. I find it hard to ever sell fast fashion pieces. (Granted, in this video you regret selling!)
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
There's definitely a lot more interest when it comes to the resale market for those more higher priced or quality items - that said, you still end up losing money, but if the item has been well-loved by you, then the pinch isn't quite so bad! xx
@kimberlyperrotis89624 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, none of those nine items were really classic enough to regret selling, with the possible exception of the black coat. This happens to everyone when we buy trendy pieces. I think the thing to do is really wear and enjoy them a lot while we have them, then let them go. I bought a huge expensive wardrobe for 2019, then lost 30 lbs. and can’t wear any of it, even though I really love a lot of it. Oh, well.

Hehe well you know you made a mistake letting it go if you're on the hunt for it again, right? If the viscose fabric was washed before sewing, it won't shrink, also it only shrinks once, not every time you wash it. I sew my own clothes and I always preshrink the fabric before sewing it. So I guess many brands take the easy way out.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing this info - this explains a LOT. I would say for sure that all the viscose items I've bought haven't been pre-washed, as I've never had an experience where the item hasn't shrunk. This goes for high street and what I would consider more "premium" brands.

With the amount of washing I have been doing, I'm all for things I can throw in the wash and hang up to line dry :) Yeah I still can't believe I parted ways with both items. Viscose doesn't shrink in the wash usually, at least from what I know from fabrics. I have quite a few tops, shirts and dresses in viscose and I wash them either by hand or in the washing machine on a delicate cycle and +30 degrees Celsius. Never had an experience of anything shrinking in the wash.
@mademoisellejaime4 жыл бұрын
It's funny you say that, as every experience I've had with viscose, it's shrunk in the wash. The last viscose pieces I bought, I hand washed in cold water (colder than 30 deg), barely agitated it in the water to try and minimise shrinkage, and both items shrunk a full size. It was pretty upsetting as it happened to two dresses that I'd only worn a handful of times. I even go to the extent of reshaping the items post washing too :( I'm curious to know what you're doing differently to me! It's happened to items I've put in the wash on a 30 deg C delicate cycle as well.
@inspiredby6244 жыл бұрын
@@mademoisellejaime Well if it shrinks a whole size (and doesn't get weirdly misshapen) couldn't you simply go up a size on any viscose items you buy? Dry cleaning is so expensive and annoying that I personally just just machine wash everything and hope that the price of the odd item that might get ruined ends up being lower than constantly dry cleaning it would have been ;)

I feel like they’ve become so associated with a particular point in “fashion time”. They are beautiful though. I do fall into this trap sometimes of purchasing something either super popular, super identifiable and/or hardly ever wearing something expensive for fear of damaging it (affecting resale value or just loving it so much). These videos are very helpful in supporting a more thoughtful and educated thought process about what one purchases and why....and what to hopefully not repeat.
