Do you like Portugal or Italy better? I know it's tough. I like both and can't decide which I'd rather live in

As an Italian I can say that among the Mediterranean countries, Italy has the worst bureaucracy and taxation, yet it has the best and most diverse landscape hands down, when I went to Pico do Arieiro in Madeira, despite being a wonderful hike, coming from my last trip in the Italian dolomites I honestly thought "meh", please don't hate me for saying this 😄. There's a few underrated spots in the country due to lack of good airports, Assisi and Umbria for history, religion and nature lovers, Rimini/San Marino/Gradara area for night life, Beaches that remind the northern Eastern us coast, medieval villages and a bit of mountains, le marche for a mix of all of the above but at a better price, and for people that are looking at even cheaper life/tourism options go to Abruzzo (great mountains) and Molise (nice beaches and very low cost of living and housing, even lower than andalucia), good food is included in all of the mentioned underrated areas, good work with the channel, love the "european retiring spots according to american retirees" series!

Good info, glad you enjoyed your trip. I am living in the north of Italy. I am here working, however. This is one area I was considering relocating to for retirement or living part time. It's great and I have enjoyed my time. My contract ends in a few months and I am considering renewing. There are a lot of benefits, as you pointed out. I love the history and seeing old places and castles. But it's like that all over Europe. I enjoyed living in the UK for the same reason. Where to live is very personal and I think many people see pictures of Italy and just think that's where they want to be. Or they visit the tourist spots and think the same. Tourist places are for tourists, however. If you get outside, it's very different. I highly recommend an extended stay where you want to live and get to know the community, how things work and the Italian style of life.

Our website www.itllbefunretirement.com has a checklist and articles in order help you or anyone to create a good strong scouting trip. That will allow them to find a place to live vs just a place to visit. Have a wonderful day Alan

Another Fine video of Italy my favorite country filled with breathtaking natural beauty. Remember Genoa very well since we had to change the train traveling from Milan to Cinque Terre. Looking from the window of the train, Genoa looked very old and not so interesting but from your Vlog there is beauty inside the city when you go in. Have taken 3 trips (says how much we love Italy) in the last 4 years to Italy and covered Naples, Amalfi, Cinque Terre, Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Pisa, Lake Como. Like to cover Portofino area , Verona, Bergamo, the Dolomites etc. The list in Italy is never ending.

Another epic episode 👍 Considering the high tax situations in all these countries, I wonder why not just stay 3 months in each country and keep rotating? I would also include Turkey , cypress Malta Germany and few other Eastern European countries … few from Asia like Thailand Japan Malaysia etc

Without the correct citizenships this would be difficult. Americans can only stay in Schengen zone (most of Western Europe) for 90 days at a time (then 90 days out). To stay longer, you need a residence visa, which is usually predicated on spending longer than 6 months in one country and being a tax resident of that country. You can do a 90 day constant travel if you were to go from Schengen, to Turkey or Montenegro for 90 days, then back. Probably this would get tiring for most people as you would be in cheap Airbnbs instead of your own home. Also, a lot of retirees choose Europe because it’s easier to live cheaply on social security, and usually that income level is low enough that they don’t notice the insane taxes.

We got a train from Milan to the 'Cinque Terre' five towns that are famous with lots of photos. It stopped in Genoa and then stopped at lots of towns along to coast. Most of the people got off at those towns we had never heard of and many looked like they were doing so for a day trip 'chairs, umbrellas etc'. A local mentioned that they were much more fun and inexpensive than the more famous and tourist focused 'Cinque Terre' towns. Give them a look sometime. I love the more 'local' places than the tourist places.

I like this one... I don't know much about Portugal but I've been all over Italy, many times. The weather in Madeira is probably the best in Europe. You just can't beat it. But it comes with isolation. You rely on airtravel which seems subideal to say the least. Italy on the other hand... very accessible. Many Airports, airlines, destinations... trains, buses, even a car brings you to places. 8/10. Madeira also seems on top of the hype curve... frankly the prices are totally out of control. There will be many, many bagholders eventually. Italy has so much culture it's absolutely world class. But that brings the crowds and Italy has really become a victim of its own success. So touristy (tourist traps, bad overpriced food, can be expensive). It clearly isn't what it used to be. There's a constant state of economic pressure (aging) and society reflects that through urban decay and financial stress but also corruption. The rules in Italy are often interpreted flexibly. Every Italian will tell you about the Govts. ineptness. I've been looking at it but the tax implications (and headache) of owning personal property (I'm European) are significant and not wort it. To me anyways. Italy is aging fast so if you think housing is cheap now... it'll only get cheaper from here on (at least outside the city centres).

Oa 300rivers, Thanks for supporting us. The trick is understanding that you would have to become tax residents. So you would live in Portugal a minimum of 6 consecutive months or 8 non consecutive months and pay taxes. Then you would be able to apply. I know. It is hard to decide sometimes if we want to leave out about where we are, or to cut out telling people who we are, or to cut out telling people they can do this too, or to tell them how they can support us so we can afford to make videos. In this one we decided to tell you it all. Most times we leave something out. It is a catch 22. Thanks for your feedback. We do try to make it different each time. Maybe you will like the next one better. Please let us know. We appreciate your support.

Only one complaint about your video, seriously, you do not mention the food enough! Nice video, again.....I have spent about a month in Italy, some time in the north, capped off by a week Rome. The history will overwhelm you. Literally walking the same streets as Julius Cesar. Fun story, I was walking home from the bars one night and stumbled across the site of a 3 ancient 3 temples. I asked the cab stand across the street what happened here, cabbie told me that is where Julius Cesaer got assinated. That location is off the main tourist tours due to a lack of parking, most tourists never see it. I also stumbled across the site where Emperor Augustus & his 2nd wife were entombed before it got developed, again, barely anyway tourists find it. Enjoy Rome, eat lots of ice cream!
