My main concern is loneliness. Finding couples friends and other ladies to befriend and spend time with. My husband doesn’t speak Portuguese but does know French. I have heard that taking language classes can be a lot of fun and a great way to meet others.

Hi Alan and Leslie - This video has lots of great information and advice. I think it's really important for people to be flexible and open-minded to help them adapt to life in the new country they have chosen to settle in. Rather than compare it to where they have come from, embrace and enjoy the differences of the culture and lifestyle. Cheers!

I think Spain is a better place to live. I bought a beautiful house in the Andalucían mountains for 45K euros, little renovations needed, about 3,000 sq ft. $400 a year property tax, $350 a year property insurance. I easily live on less than $1,000 a month.

Just got back from Lisbon yesterday. On the bureaucracy, yes Portugal is terrible and it is right up there with the worst EU countries like Greece and Italy. However, it should be clarified that many EU countries are very efficient and better than North America so it varies greatly depending on country. Bureaucracy aside, Portugal is an easy country to travel too and/or live in. People are quite laid back, friendly, will speak English to you, etc. In many other countries the people are uptight, worried about everything, annoyed with tourists, etc. Portugal was chill before and is still chill today. Countries like Germany, France, Belgium, etc. were more like that 40 yrs ago when I hitchhiked all over for 7 months but they arent these days except maybe in the smaller tiwns. Side note: Switzerland was snobby even then and is worse today. I think the main thing to take into consideration is that your experience in suburbia with the large house you don't need, the large property you don't need, the long suburban commute in your car for everything...that is not the EU experience in general. Think: more walking, more public transport, more local convenience, more community. Get fresh bread from the baker, fresh pastries, go for dinner at 10:00 pm, etc. If you aren't willing to change your mindset, then don't even consider it. But if you are willing to let go of your suburban paradigms then you might just live life a bit more.

Compared to the US this is nothing, we bought a cando and our property tax per year is € 467. Twice a week we go grocery shopping, without denying ourselves anything, we spend no more than €250 for three of us, my husband, daughter and me. Bonus - weather and natural beauty

Have you looked into the elder care facilities? What about the language barrier in the medical field is that an issue?
@ItllBeFun
@ItllBeFun Ай бұрын
Bom dia Jinger, The healthcare has many English speaking doctors. We have not had any issues at all. If you lived in some rural areas of Portugal or throughout Europe you would experience the need to learn the language quickly. Elder care doesn't really exist the same as in the USA however there is a very nice private facility here on the island of Madeira that we have visited. When we visited it was running about 60k a year for a couple and availability is at a premium. Come join us on Patreon at www patreon.com/itllbefun

I have a question. If you have to rent an unfurnished home how easy is it to arrange delivery of furniture from the store to your apartment?
@ItllBeFun
@ItllBeFun Ай бұрын
Very easy. Just ask before you purchase so you will not be disappointed. Also ask if you can pay to have the item set up or put together.

I'm presently in Guatemala. Service in Guatemala and Mexico is incredible. Service is always given with a smile. When I lived in Europe, I got the feeling that some of the European waiters did not want to serve me. I'm not a big fan of imcompency. Some Americans abroad call it being laid back. My time is important. I don't want to wait 20 minutes for my check in a restaurant. Guatemala is poor, but the service and people here make up for any flaws that one might find. Americans seriously romanticize Europe. After living in Europe for several years, I feel blessed to have discovered Latinamerica. It's so nice to finally meet your wife.

I recently learned if one is over 65 and has a chronic health condition, (pre-existing condition - remember before Obama Care?), you are out of luck in getting private health insurance in Portugal unless one goes with MGEN, which is very poorly rated online. Plus there's the one-year wait for private health care to begin. Am I missing something here about this issue? Why is Portugal's healthcare system so highly rated with these arcane rules controlled by private insurance companies? I'm just asking?
@ItllBeFun
@ItllBeFun Ай бұрын
Bom dia paxwolf, Once you are a tempory resident after about 4 months you qualify for the publice healthcare system. So unlike the USA you are actually fully covered. Amazing! In order to reduce wait times we purchase private health insurance. The best one for over 65 and pre exciting conditions is Mgen. Once purchased it took 3 months before it was in effect. Which isn't a problem because you would still have the required travel insurance you purchased in place - this is a requirement of getting a VISA. Our healthcare service and cost here is a100% better than the USA. We are very happy.

@RushmoorFizzbomb

@@ItllBeFun Many countries like Luxembourg, Estonia, Finland, Liechtenstein, Kosovo, Malta, Monaco, Ukraine and San Marino actually have toll-free highways. Other countries such as Andorra, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark Iceland, Sweden, Germany and Montenegro have tolls only for certain bridges or tunnels. The UK has bridge tolls on some bridges and a couple of Motorways, but the vast majority have no tolls.
