Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy - A Reflection

ITMA is delighted to present a special reflective documentary on Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy that shines a light on the impact & value of this special summer school. Premiering on Facebook, KZbin and itma.ie this Sat 18 July 2020 at 8.00 pm. #SSWC2020
This documentary will trace the origins, ethos and impact of one of Ireland's most important music events - the annual Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy (SSWC) held in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare. ITMA are very proud to be in a position to help fill the void created by the cancellation of the 48th Scoil Samhraidh WIllie Clancy (SSWC) in light of Covid-19. Since its inception in 1973, SSWC, also known as the Willie Clancy Summer School, has had a hugely positive influence on the development of Irish traditional music, song and dance. For thousands of traditional musicians, the first week of July is the highlight of their musical calendar. This documentary will feature archival footage, contemporary interviews and performances from many of Ireland's leading traditional musicians including: Willie Clancy, Micho Russell, Tommy and Siobhán Peoples, Noel Hill, Cormac Begley, John Kelly, Joe Ryan, Áine Hensey, the McCarthy Family, Mulcahy Family, The Glackin Family, The Friel Sisters and many many more.

I never heard Willie Clancy in person. He was well revered in Miltown and as a man who died too soon. Days prior to Clancy week I remember a Clancy Pub at the corner of the Ballard road that had nothing to do with Clancy but was reaping a benefit for the name. I was there in Miltown for the first Clancy Week. On Sunday, there was a Mass in Gaelic with pipes in the loft. Sorry to say from church it was off to Shannon. Clancy shares the Ballard Cemetery with two generations of my Mothers Family .

Superb clip also of Paddy Canny playing solo at 21:46. How much more treasure like that is lying in archives? By the way, does anyone know the name of the tune Canny plays? I’ve heard it in the first set played by Martin Hayes on the ‘Watermelon Wednesdays’ video.
