What I did find was: a voter is allowed to document his/her own voting process with photo and video. There are rules about 'watchers' who oversee the functioning of a polling station, but they differ in all fifty states. Registered journalists have access to the polling station, and can view from a designated area. How to register as journalist during elections vary for all states as well.

These polling places are there to ensure the right to vote, which is fundamental in this country, yet, too often, they try to infringe on the right of the press, another fundamental right enshrined in the constitution. The officer upheld his oath to the constitution by protecting your fright to film. It's good to see that.
