The long dead 1010 John Deere is finally coaxed back into a running machine. Of course the video highlights the carburetor work and electrical testing in order to get it to the point of operation. So you will see a hand formed carburetor gasket being made and learn the basics for testing a set of points and a 12volt coil. To clarify, there is much much more to a coil than the basic test shown today, but at least with a five dollar volt-ohmmeter you will be able to determine if your coil is good enough to get fire for the plugs or not.
This 1010 sat here for a good number of years and would probably have never deteriorated to the point it is at the beginning of this video if I'd have just kept a little gas in it and used it from time to time over the years. But that's the way it is...use it or lose it is the order of the universe. Well, that unwritten 'rule' is kind of a double edged sword. Use it too much and it wears itself out and still ends up needing a lot of work. That goes for anything mechanical though. As we dig deeper into this little tractor, you will find out more of its history. There is still one major problem bugging the little guy and that's the clutch. I have to take a bit of credit....actually ALL the credit....for most likely the improper installation of the clutch disc 10 or 12 years ago. I remember poring over the manual to determine the direction of the disc because it was longer than two days since removal....jus' sayin'. I know there is almost always only ONE way for it to assemble, but I think this time I inadvertently installed it in the reverse position. And you and I BOTH know what that means....Its gotta come apart to see for sure. So at that point you will get a full disclosure of the dastardly deed of a bad repair by Tractorman44 !! Of course I'm just assuming that's the issue. That remains yet to be seen.
The fuel tank, unfortunately, is totally filled with encrusted rust flakes. The bad thing about this series of JD is the brilliance of the design engineers could not foresee the future development of the ethanol fuels and oxygenated fuels. The nasty fuels we get today seem to cause countless issues with old machines that are forced to sit for an extended period. So if you happen to be an oil/fuel company executive that contribute to the development of this nasty garbage you call 'modern fuels' I invite you to take a long walk off of a short pier. For the sake of all old tractor, old car and old truck enthusiasts...PLEASE, do it quick !! That my friend is all I have to say about that. Except I'd like to add that you have no friends here nor will you ever.
Now that that bit of a rant is off my chest....we can go back to the brilliance of the JD engineers as it ties into the nasty gas issue causing major tank issues. Those guys...and I know you know who you are....created a nightmare for us guys that like old tractors. Which one of you or what team of engineers thought it prudent to design a steering system that sends the steering shaft right through the center of the gas tank...?!! I mean, c'mon couldn't you have just made it any worse...?? Oh of course you can, you can and DID !! On this little 1010 you designed it to where the steering shaft has to pass through the top of the radiator too !! But kudos to you for putting the power steering unit in the space between the gas tank and radiator. At least its easy to get to to check and top off fluids. Ok engineers, you are forgiven. No wait. I'm kidding...please join the fuel company engineer in their long walk off a short pier as well.
You may think by the above rant that I don't like these tractors but that is far from the truth. I like all tractors but the best ones in my humble opinion are user friendly to work on....no matter the color. I also have a 50 JD as well as an older LA and have had a few A's as well, selling a '39 A just last year. I even housed a 330S for a friend a few years back. But he sold it to buy an engagement ring. Now the tractor AND his wife are BOTH gone. But I don't think the John Deere had anything to do with that...jus' sayin' (-; But I'm sure one time I heard her say he should have bought a RED tractor. Might be a connection after all......
Thanks for hanging in there and reading everything this far.... #johndeere, #firststart, #willitrun
