Visiting a friend and he is working on removing a cylinder head on a 4020 so I’m helping him. We got the injectors out today and will finish removing the head tomorrow. Sure enjoyed Rachel’s presentation. I love watching competent people and always learn something new from them.

I found for installing engine heads make up some guide bolt. Take old head bolts, cut off the bolt head and then round off the shaft where the bolt head was cut off. Install the guide bolts, slide the head gasket down on the bolts and slowly lower the engine head. Unscrew the guide bolts and proceed as normal with the head bolt install. I have used that on many a Cat and Waukesha engine, it just makes life easier and you do not have to worry as much about damaging the head gasket. Good video!

Lots of commits about wearing gloves. I like the Gingells, also find it nearly impossible to handle small parts with gloves on. Of course wear them when cleaning with strong solvent. One tip that I was taught by my shop teacher. Before starting to work with clean hands. Rub a little go-jo or similar into your hands. Helps keep them from chapping, easier to wash when done.

Just an FYI, when you're installing the valves into the guides use rear axle ( diff. ) oil, it contains a large amount of lead and will lubricate the valve stem well past the break in period.

Question ... What is the reason that you did not lap the valves ? I was taught that the valves should be lapped to get a positive seat to valve contact. Thank You for your tutorials ... wonderful teaching on all your videos
@johnboyington34565 жыл бұрын
Carl Boehm , actually valve lapping is not a good practice. Valve and seats should have a one degree difference which is called interference angle. For example for a 45 degree valve you grind the valve at 44 and the seat at 45.
@carlboehm38585 жыл бұрын
@@johnboyington3456 thank you for the explanation and answer ... I will be doing the valves on my Ford 2N and also on my Ford 300 six ... I was going to get the lapping compound but now I can reconsider that

Word of caution -- I replaced the head gasket on a JD 2750. A very similar engine, but diesel. I learned the hard way that the head bolts should not be dripping with oil like yours were. I'm not sure how you escaped the problem that I encountered. I dipped my head bolts in motor oil, immediately dropped them in their respective holes, and proceeded to torque them down. Unknown to me, the excess oil was wiped off as the bolt was screwed into the block threads. That resulting puddle of oil seeped out around the head gasket and appeared on the outside of the engine. This oil contamination of the head gasket is an obvious problem. This mistake cost me a head gasket, as I had to remove the head again, clean both the block and the head, and reinstall with a new gasket. This time, I just drizzled a little oil on the bolts, and let them drip on a towel for a minute before installing in the engine.

Does this tractor in 3010 gas version have cylinder liners or a solid bore? I am looking at one that is getting coolant in the oil but is very cheap to buy.
@DanGingell4 жыл бұрын
3010 gas tractors have liners. An engine rebuild is a little costly on these models, so calculate the cost of the engine rebuild into your offered price on the tractor.

Don't the valves, and seats have to be lapped?
@johnboyington34564 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. The valves should be ground at a one degree difference from the seat. For example with 45 deg valves the seat is ground at 45 and the valve at 44.
