That little bird’s mouth at the bottom of the lower bracket diagonal (2:11) will split off of the 6”x6” as the downward forces try to push the member into the unsupported hole in the bricks behind. Dan’s demonstration only applied downward forces, whereas the largest potential force will be uplift on the cantilever skirt from gale force winds. Those forces will pull the bracket bottom out of the hole unless it is firmly secured. Dan did not discuss how these members are connected together. The original members were fastened with beefy mortise and tenons secured by wood pegs. Dan has probably used a couple toe screws….inadequate. Also, notice that Dan added a 2”x2” ledger scab at the bottom of the ledger installed last week to help support the bottom of the horizontal member which was hanging below the support point…only after he got a lot of feedback through the comments. Never seen a two piece ledger, not to mention that the ledgers are inadequately fastened to the masonry wall (should be 1/2” anchor bolts with fender washers and lock nuts). Dan also relocated the metal angle fastener from beneath the horizontal member (where the comments were screaming that it was only half fastened and half dangling below the ledger) to the top of the beam where it could be fully fastened. Obviously, Dan picked up on a couple cogent comments and changed his design midstream to improve the structural integrity. For the handful of us viewers that are licensed engineers, that’s the purpose of the comments…to alert him of structural deficiencies before they start to multiply and get irreversibly built into the building. The intent is not to be critical, but to be helpful in the building process.
@MVeans-j7wАй бұрын
And I might add as to why this structural section is not sorted out by a certified structural engineer in the first place. Or maybe the romanticism of DIY is too much to give up in case the uneducated subscribers might turn away. And we know what that means. Seems Local Govt in France does not take an interest in these human events.

Good comments. I do worry about the crazy storms and crucial need for refitting the / a substantial lightning rod as found during an earlier video when they were still clearing debris. Really hope they get this watertight b4 big winter storms arrive. 🤞 With a big copper rooftop. Will there be mad experiments on stormy nights up there? A van der Graaf generator? I assume solar panels will have to go only on the flatter roof sections. All new builds or rebuilds obviously need to aim to be self generating these days, or function off-grid or generate power for others where they can. Great stuff :)

Your explanation about the structural strength of the hangmen makes some sense Dan when you look at it from the perspective of the downward forces as you demonstrated with your glued model. It makes much less sense when the turret will be subject to swirling loads arising from a storm which will hit the hangmen from all sides, especially laterally, not just vertically. It looks to me as though it would be good to have more bracing (brackets etc) to stop or reduce sideways movement where the hangmen fix to your wooden beam you have screwed into the wall.
@grendel_nzАй бұрын
Indeed. What's to stop the entire, completely unaerodynamic, turret section from being blown off in a storm? Don't trust old mortar. It wasn't designed for future crazy storms. I guess the copper underskirt is designed to stop up-drafts, if you will. To reduce uplift forces.
