Hi everyone, thank you for tuning in! after a quick update on the honey house, we are making splits today(with help this time with some much appreciated help) and putting two breeder queens under push in cages. its all go for the next 3 weeks to try and get this honey off, make as many splits as possible and make some queens!

I'm a plumber and a tip for pulling the pipes is to use a vacuum to suck a string through first then pull that back with pipe tied to it, I would also cap the ducting to prevent mice getting in as they will chew the plastic pipe, for some reason they just like doing it regardless of temp.

@@chester6343 we had original guide wire in the pipes to pull through a rope but miraculously we didn’t need to use them. Conduit I fitted was big enough. Will definitely be blocking off holes. Got some expanding foam. Will use that on all conduits when we’re done! Thanks for the tip!

I use the same supplier. I only get the carnican queens as I find the Buckfast tend to become aggressive quite quickly in my area when they’re F2

Thanks, Kamon. Admittedly this is one of my best apiaries but how we’ve all got "one good one LOL" like you I seem to have struck well with Honey this year not everywhere but I’ve got some to sell and I’ve got some to overwinter with. The colonies are fed also which is the most important thing good nutrition as you say leads to good Bees. Thanks for your comments about the house. If you come over in January February after the expo I can show you around it will actually be finished then the invitation is there, brother😜🎯🙏🐝

The honey house looks great.. it just takes time and patience. I know you didn't do it for profit but to make it easier for you.. l did the same thing and l don't assume I'll ever get the investment back from honey. But I love the work now and I hated it when I was young working with my father the old way.. because of it he doesn't want to stop and keeps 30 hives at 81 years old. I hope you graft some great queens from those. We already tried some of those Nikot frames.. it was a lucky year. We got honeydew from Metcalfa cicadas. It was fast and heavy. Thanks. Keep us updated with the building and the grafting from those new ones

Yeah, totally. That’s why I was using the splits you see a lot of people criticise me for splitting up big colonies but we have no other nectar flow so we have to use the Bees for what they’re good for while we can before they start to decrease in size, but good point Thanks for comments

I tried carne used to import them from Slovenia I wouldn’t have one now if somebody gave me one terrible bees you do get less honey with them but the Queens are just so flighty they will just fly off the frame when you’re doing your inspections and you can spend ages looking for a queen that isn’t even there she’s up in the trees somewhere. But we all have to try them to find that out ourselves.

@@martprice7726 that’s exactly it!! ., Thank you for your comment. I appreciate that I’ve heard so much about different types of bees. You just have to try them for yourself and the supply you have don’t forget has their own genetics some more flightier than others? It’s the same for Buckfast. I had a Buckfast breeder Queen a couple of years ago and every time I took daughters from her they would all rush out the hive at me but none would sting me. It was the kind of biggest false alarm I’ve ever known but the bees were actually great and they did really well. I think you’re absolutely right that you have to try before you can say yes or no.

You have to live on a mountain to be happy with Slovenian bees. I'm in Croatia at sea level and when I was young and it was the same country Yugoslavia I tried many Slovenian carnies and they were never better than my carnies from the place I live and selected them for it. Their bees looked like lazy bees.. my were flying 3 hours before those would look out the entrance. But I bet my would be bad on a mountain. Than again I never had problems with them not being calm. They are one of the calmest bees in the world. They stick to the frames like glue. I think you had some bad luck with the seller of those queens

Fantastic video Richard, justv2 questions. 1 do they not chew her out from the other side and 2 that's a long run of pipework to the front of the honey house, could the boiler go more in the middle if not think of me everytime your running the water off waiting for the hot lol. Seriously that's one amazing honey house, makes Gruffs look like the wish version you'd get off the Internet and I'd be happy with his.

@@Cubrider thanks for your very kind words although it’s not finished yet I feel confident that should do really well once it’s finished completely there’s always lots of technical issues and trying to resolve them is always complicated. Yes sometimes they do release the queen from behind the wax frame, but if you use a frame that’s a little bit older in most cases that doesn’t happen in my experience.

With the amount of hives you have, what do you use for mite control?

@@joncotn I cage my queens as I start to harvest honey in mid to end of July, finishing normally in mid August. The rest I don’t cage, or nucs I make get Amitraze strips. But in terms of control the caged queens get oxyalic Acid upon the release of the queens. Then they all get treated when possibly broodless in mid to end of November.
