So here’s a quick video just to answer some of the questions that you kindly asked this morning after I released a video on virgin Queens this is what I find happens in my juries and this is why using virgin Queens is such a good tool if you have them available.

How long can you actually Bank a unmated queen. How long can you Bank a mated Queen two different questions???

Unless Richard advises otherwise : You can bank a Mated Queen for longer than an Umated : as Virgin Queens only have a few Days to 'attract' those Drones attention in the DCA, so she gets Mated successfully. That's why late Season VQ don't get Mated so well : less Drones flooding that DCA. Banking : Queens : I would say up to Two Weeks max : Virgin Queens : Say x3 or x4 Days max. Keep adding lots of sourced 'Nurse Bees' from other Colonies. And Capped Brood. Richard explains the reason in this Video. 👀 Both will attend, Feed, look after those Caged Q's & VC's as Queen "Need" attending to, unlike regular Bees. Hope this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 DCA : Drone Congregation Area ! Where Boy Bees do the business. And the Virgin becomes Mated and flies 🤞back to the Hive she came from. 😉

I have been a hobby beekeeper for 20 plus years and never thought of harvesting virgin queens. To keep them and pop into nucs is such a super idea. We'll done and thanks for sharing. Have u done a video on the incubation of the queen's? If not please do so. Thanks again. Jim

FYI, virgin queens can sometimes get through queen excluders in my experience.

Can mated queens be banked in a queen right colony? When introducing a mated queen to a colony I first make sure it is queen less with the test frame or by removing the old queen. Next I spray the colony and new, caged queen with a few drops of peppermint oil in water and put the cage on the same frame where the old queen was. By the time the peppermint smell has gone the pheromone from the new queen has been passed, this saves time having to go back and release the new queen.

Hi Richard. Thank you for your information about the virgin queens. Referring to your talk about the drone laying colony, putting a frame of brood release more effective pheromones there or putting a frame of larvae there?

Thankyou , soz to cause you more work 😃😃😃 waiting for my queen cell to hatch so I now know if she doesn’t manage to get back they will be expecting a virgin/ or none laying rather than a mated laying queen 😇

Hi Richard nice information I will try a virgin on my next requeening, I’ve just tried to introduce 2 mated queens to a slightly pissy hive I waited a week after removing the old queen and tried with a push in cage, they chewed through from the back overnight and killed her (should have used a frame with plastic foundation). The second queen I left in her transport cage and they just kept sealing her in covering the cage with propolis and wax each day after 5 days of clearing the wax and them resealing I finally gave in and opened the plug, they chewed through the candy and dispatched her. So now I’ve given them some fresh eggs and left them to it.

Hi mate, yes I’ve had the same happen to me the bees chewing through the comb and killing the queen under a pin cushion cage very disheartening infact the colony in question killed 6 of their own virgin queens tryed too kill a Mated queen I introduced and just refused to get queen right they died out on me in the end.

Hi Richard, I was told you only have about 3 weeks or so to get a virgin queen mated and if you wait longer, they will not mate properly or lay properly. What is your experience?
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. That’s why I say quite clearly that the best place for virgins is in a colony pertaining to be a queen and getting mated. The banking process I really use for more than a week but with the right weather and good quality banking of the Queens you can extend it a little bit but they still need to be mated within three weeks at the very latest, preferably two

How many days does it take for a queen bee to start laying eggs after artificial insemination .... Thanks
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 2 жыл бұрын
It depends but on normal mating she could be laying within about 5/6 days, but it can take as long as 2 weeks if the weather is bad! 👍🐝
