Likewise the energy providing moon of Praxis blowing up near the movies start was an allegory for the Chernobyl disaster near the end of the Soviet Union(Gorbachev once wrote that perhaps Chernobyl more then anything else was the biggest reason that the Soviet Union collapsed).

The explosion of Praxis and the subsequent coverup are a direct correlation to the Soviets and the Chernobyl disaster, as well as them sheepishly admitting that they need help. In the Star Trek timeline this ultimately led to the Khitomer Accords which ended formal hostilities with the Klingon Empire. Klingons are absolutely the opposite of the Vulcans: act on emotion rather than logic, and will make very rash decisions based mostly on how angry they are lol. As to the Excelsior looking like the Enterprise: Gene Roddenberry dictated Starfleet ship design had to follow a certain set of artistic rules, including have a saucer section of some kind and warp nacelles in sets of 2 that weren't integrated into the primary hull (this rule was broken with the Defiant class and with the future Enterprise-D in the season finale of TNG, but by then Roddenberry had already passed) Star Trek: Generations, as well as First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, are all set approx. 90 years after the original films and follows the exploits of the crew of the Star Trek: The Next Generation show on the Enterprise-D, a Galaxy-class multi-role command starship that is the largest and most powerful ship of the line ever built by Starfleet. I highly recommend you watch the series (although the first two seasons are a little corny as it was trying to be more like the original series and not it's own thing til season 3), as well as Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The show Enterprise is a prequel series set before the original and also very good. The newer JJ Abrams Star Trek films are basically a reboot of the original films and are ok.

Trek was always parallel to our world. the hostilities between the Federation and the Klingons are the USA and USSR during the cold war. The Klingon neutral zone is the dead man's land between West Berlin and East Germany. The Romulan neutral zone is the DMZ between North and South Korea; while understanding that the Romulans are representing the Chinese.

Funny story, ship designs like Excelsior were actually among the initial prototypes and first designs that the studio built when they were trying to pick a ship to be the Enterprise for Star Trek. The Excelsior was even in the running to be the Enterprise D in The Next Generation until they settled on the widely-known Galaxy-class starship.

This is the greatest Star Trek movie. There are some other strong contenders, including First Contact and Wrath of Khan, but this is such a beautiful sendoff to the original crew. It has everything that made the original show the original show: The camaraderie, Kirk being a womanizer, McCoy being witty, Spock being a good leader and friend, Scotty being a good engineer, a klingon villain, space battles, and the bad starfleet admiral trope,. And ultimately a lesson about coming to terms with our own demons. And that scene with Sulu snapping "fly her apart then!" at his XO, will always send shivers down my spine.

I agree these are good. For him, as a newcomer to this franchise, he may appreciate the pilot (when Bones and Data are talking), Relics (with Scotty) and Unification (both parts)..... possibly even the episode about Sarek (which, I think is the title of that episode. It will show a crossover of the original series and even has the cameos, and helps explain the evolution of the doctrine of Starfleet, which seems to be much more focused plot points, even in casual conversation moving forward. Of course, there are the iconic episodes which you mentioned, but there are a few that deal with Worf and the Klingon/Romulan war and that whole thing that can be pivotal in Star Trek: Nemesis and even comes up a little with Lursa and B'Tor in the next movie. Great comment and recommendations from you all!

Man, these movies (alongside the Original Star Trek-Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation and, of course, the Original Star Wars-Movies) were my Childhood. One thing I especially enjoy about them is that they are very different from one another. Despite featuring the same/same-looking ship and the same Main Cast and set within the same continunity, each has a unique story and a unique feel, almost belonging to different genres. For example, the first was a meditative hard Sci-Fi-Film, the fourth was straight up comedy with a serious core and this one was a Detective Story/Political Thriller in Space. And I love each of them to different degrees. Something that needs to be considered when looking at "The Undiscovered Country" is the historical context of the time it was made in. In 1991, the Cold War was about to end and the Klingons were always more or less meant as the ST-counterpart to the Soviet Union. So the basic premise they chose was "What if the Iron Curtain came down in space?" Thus the Klingons in this movie mirrored the Soviet Union of the late 80s, with equivalents to Gorbachev, Chernobyl and Perestroika/Glasnost, as well as Gulags and Show Trials. All this to set up TNG, which started airing in 1987 and is set 70 Years later. By that time the Klingons and the Federation are Allies, so this Movie can be looked as as a Prequel of sorts. As usual, some factoids: - The Movie was dedicated to Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, who died mere days before the Movies' premiere - 1991 marked the franchises' 25th Anniversary. - The director was Nicholas Meyer, who also directed "The Wrath of Khan". He brought back that movies' darker, nautical, more militaristic feel - While most of the Effects were still done with traditional means, CGI was used extensively for the first time: The shockwave at the start and the floating blood were done with digital effects - Speaking of Effects, this was the last time the Model of the _Enterprise,_ originally built for the first movie was used. AFAIK, it is currently owned by Jeff Bezos. - This Movie sadly marked the final onscreen apperance of De Forest Kelley (Bones). He died in 1999, the first of the Original Actors to go - Christopher Plummer's Chang is one of my favourite Villains of the Series. Legendary Actor, too. He passed away last year but starred in high profile movies until nearly the end of his life. - I heard that Kevin Feige is a huge Star Trek-Fan and that it was his idea to end "Avengers: Endgame" with a signature-scene as well. When I saw "Endgame" for the first time, I *instantly* thought of STVI. For me, back then, that was just the icing on the cake. Anyway, again thanks for these reactions. Looking forward to your thoughts on the TNG-Movies. I can pretty much guess which Episodes were recommended to you, but I'm curious about what you'll think of them.

I recall hearing that the reason the Klingon "floating blood" was made a pink/lavender colour is that red blood would have been considered more violent imagery by the ratings board and resulted in a higher age restriction. The MPAA and their bizarre ratings board are a weird bunch.

So, something that's going to be a little challenging going forward: When the first Star Trek movie came out, it had been 10 years since The Original Series had gone off the air. So they made sure to reintroduce all the main characters before getting on with the plot of the film. For people who had never seen the show, this was tremendously helpful. Generations is going to be different. They pretty much started filming it the day after they wrapped up Star Trek: The Next Generation. So they didn't have to explain who these characters were or what motivated them. They could get straight into introducing new growth and new conflicts for the characters--and if you haven't seen any episodes of the show, you might be left wondering why you should care. In particular, the movie pays off a 4 year old recurring plot device within the first act that radically changes the character to whom it applies. I guess what I'm saying is: if you plan to continue the series, expect to be a little confused starting out.

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theaters when I was a kid. I'd seen reruns of TOS, as well as all the other movies, so this one really felt like it was a proper finale. At that point, no one knew if there'd ever be another Star Trek again. There are a lot of interesting things in this film, particularly the character development of Kirk and Spock. There's a deleted scene in which Kirk says "LET them die!" and he actually recoils at his own hateful words. In the old days, Kirk would've likely escalated or tried to bluff his way his way out of the situation with the chancellor's ship. It would've broken down the peace talks and continued the war. But he's gotten older and a little wiser. No one expected him to immediately surrender like that, which is why Chang, Valeris, and the rest of the conspiracy had to scramble to get him and Bones arrested and get rid of the evidence. His final line, "Second star to the right, and straight on til morning." is a reference to Peter Pan, and is a nod to Kirk's ever-youthful and optimistic view of the future. Much like the ending of Wrath of Khan, he feels young again. Also, Spock is still shown in all his logical and deductive glory, but he's openly more emotional now. Look at how he reacted to Valeris's betrayal, the way he slapped that phaser out of her hand, or his reaction to resorting to the Vulcan mind meld to get the information out of her. He basically mind raped her, and his facial expressions and broken voice afterward speak volumes. Also, Valeris was supposed to be Saavik (the female Vulcan from Wrath of Khan and Search For Spock) in the early drafts of the script, which would've made the betrayal that much worse. Anyways, there's a ton I could say about The Next Generation. I grew up watching that when it originally broadcast, and it's seriously one of my all-time favorite shows. Some of the episodes are seriously better than some of the movies. I wish I could explain more, but I don't want to spoil anything for you. Regardless, I'm so glad you're covering Sta Trek. See you next voyage!

A lot of Trekkies claim it’s the Even Numbered films that are good, but somehow that rule breaks with “Nemesis”. In reality, if you look at who was involved in the rewrites, every film that had Nicholas Meyer at the helm is successful. He’s uncredited for rewriting Khan and Voyage Home, but he touched up a lot of the broken, disjointed ideas in each. In Undiscovered Country, he not only directed, but helped work with Nimoy on the concept.

Praxis is the Star Trek Analogy for Tchernobyl. The state the Klingon Empire is in this movie is the downfall of the Soviet Union. There was hatred and distrust on both sides. But the assassination of Gorkon made Kirk aware how much prejudice was boiling deep in himself. Years of war and the loss of his son by the hands of a Klingon made sure of that.

A few pieces of trivia for you: 1. Kirk and Bones' defense attorney is the grandfather of Worf, a Klingon officer aboard the Enterprise D who you will meet in the next movie (or any episodes of The Next Generation you might watch). 2. Valeris was originally supposed to be Saavik, the Vulcan woman from Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. But because two actresses had already played her previous, the filmmakers felt it would be too confusing to recast her again, so they just created a new character. 3. The Klingon assassin Scotty shoots wasn't actually a Klingon. In a deleted scene, one of the Klingon ebassidors notices the dead assassin is bleeding red, rather than the pink. They then pull off the guy's mask to reveal it was actually Colonal West, another member of Starfleet and an accomplice to Admiral Cartwright.

Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation The prisoner Martia with the yellow eyes is Iman, who was married to David Bowie The Federation President was one of the bad guys in Robocop (80s version) and the dad in That 70s Show The one-eyed Klingon General was in The Sound of Music, and is the voice of Arngeir in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

My family saw this when it premiered in 1991. One of the few times I could get my entire family out to the theater. It was a great experience as all the fans where there that first night. Lots of applause at "Only Nixon could go to China" and "Guess who's coming to dinner". The whole theater erupted when Chang's ship was destroyed and after the final sign off. It was a great experience!

The next 4 films were made in the late 90s. In 1988, Star Trek returned to television with Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was set 100 years after the Kirk/Spock/McCoy period. The next two subsequent series, ST: Deep Space Nine and ST: Voyager, were also set in the TNG era.

The Klingons have always been an allegory for the Soviets ever since the premier of TOS. After the USSR broke up in 1991 (the year this film was made), that was when you saw the Klingons on TNG, DS9, etc start to break away from that trope and become more of a proud dynastic warrior race with feuding houses and such.

Some interesting wordplay here. "The undiscovered country" is a quote from Hamlet, from his famous To be or not to be speech. The speech is about the choice between living or dying (specifically by suicide). The undiscovered country Hamlet mentions is death: "...Who would fardels bear, To grunt and sweat under a weary life, But that the dread of something after death, The undiscovere'd country, from whose bourn No traveller returns..."

Gene Roddenberry had 4 rules for Starfleet ship design, which is probably a big part of why Excelsior and Enterprise look similar. FWIW, the rules are: 1. warp nacelles in pairs. 2. warp nacelles must have at least 50% line of sight to each other 3. warp nacelles must be 100% visible from the frony 4. bridge at the top of the primary hull There are some ships that pop up which violate some of the rules, but in the main, this is why a Starfleet ship looks like a Starfleet ship.
