Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country (1991)
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is a 1991 American science fiction film directed by Nicholas Meyer, who also directed the second Star Trek film, The Wrath of Khan. It is the sixth feature film based on the 1966-1969 Star Trek television series. Taking place after the events of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, it is the final film featuring the entire main cast of the original television series. The destruction of the Klingon moon Praxis leads the Klingon Empire to pursue peace with their longtime adversary, the Federation; the crew of the Federation starship USS Enterprise must race against unseen conspirators with a militaristic agenda.

Christopher Plummer and William Shatner were old friends. They worked together in Canada when they were young understudies. Plummer was a Star Trek fan and Shatner pulled a few strings to bring Plummer into the cast. David Warner (Gorkon) was also St. John Talbot on Nimbus II in Star Trek V. He was also a Cardassian in Star Trek: TNG. Brock Peters reprised his role as Admiral Cartwright (from Star Trek IV.) He also played Captain Sisko's father on Deep Space Nine. He was the radio voice of Darth Vader in the old NPR Star Wars radio dramas back in the 1980s. He was also Tom Robinson in the 1962 classic film version of "To Kill a Mockingbird," whose cast had MANY MORE Star Trek connections that continue to this day (Gregory Peck's--Atticus Finch--grandson, Ethan Peck--is our present-day Spock in Discovery and Strange New Worlds, for just ONE example! "To Kill a Mockingbird" was not a Star Trek cast reunion, but a strange pre-union of future Star Trek guest stars. It's uncanny!)

Fun fact, when they wrote the Klingon language, it was never able to contain "to be" so when they decided to have the phrase "to be, or not to be" said in klingon, they literally had to rewrite part of the language to facilitate that phrase. Also Walter "chekov" koenig, had a son who played on the 80s sitcom growing pains, characters name on the show was boner. He also made a cameo on the show star trek deep space nine, he unfortunately took his own life.

Some of the events in "The Undiscovered Country" were written to parallel real world events. The Klingons vs the Federation was always a mirror of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. The destruction of Praxis mirrors the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. The treaty between the Federation and Klingons and the ceasing of hostilities (no more Neutral Zone) mirrors the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. Chancellor Gorkon is played by David Warner, the same actor who played Ambassador St. John Talbot in "Star Trek V". There is a "live action" video game made by Interplay called "Star Trek: Klingon Academy" which Christopher Plummer and David Warner both reprise their roles. The events in the game take place shortly before the events of this movie.

We all know that Mr. Data is a Sherlock Holmes fan, but in real life, this movie's director--Nicholas Meyer--is a Sherlock Holmes fan, too. (He was inducted into the Sherlock Holmes society, The Baker Street Irregulars.) Meyer also directed "The Wrath of Khan" and wrote "The Voyage Home." He's also associated with "Star Trek: Discovery." Regarding Sherlock Holmes, Meyer wrote the Holmes novel, "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution," three sequel novels, and the screenplay for its 1976 movie adaptation. That movie featured three actors who eventually co-starred together in the ST--TNG episode, "Family." Meyer has noted similarities between Holmes and Kirk (whereas most people compare Holmes with Spock.) Meyer observed that both Sherlock Holmes and Jim Kirk grow bored, restive, and frustrated whenever they're not engaged in some case, mission, or adventure. Once they're on the case, they both come alive! Meyer also directed the 1979 film, "Time After Time" which featured future Star Trek film co-stars Malcolm McDowall and David Warner. That movie was also peppered with several Sherlock Holmes in-jokes! Meyer snuck in a Sherlock Holmes homage in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country when Spock remarks, "An ancestor of mine once said, 'Eliminate the impossible and whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.'" That "ancestor" of Spock's was the human, Sherlock Holmes and that quote was one of Holmes' most famous maxims!

The "Undiscovered Country" was that destination Hamlet was considering in the "To be, or not to be" soliloquy. For Hamlet, it was death which like Gorkon's undiscovered country of the future was a unknown place of uncertainty from which travelers may never return. In the end, after the events in the movie, there was peace between the Federation and Klingons even if it wasn't always easy.

I learned about General Chang's eyepatch from the computer game Klingon Academy, he was a professor at that school, makes Starfleet look like candy land, and Chang boarded a fellow Klingon vessel, challenged the captain to a fight to the death, the captain scoffed this isn't the academy, we are not your students, then Chang retorted, you flaunt your cowardice in front of your men?? Then of course, the captain finally relented and fought, he gouged out Chang's eye, but Chang killed the Captain in the end. Won the respect of the crew, helped stopped the brief war between the houses,

Wonderful to be on the Trek journey with your reactions to these old but classic movies. This is yet another Trek's hallmark allegory, hinting at the end of Cold War in 1991 with dissolution of USSR and "fall" of Berlin Wall. If you love the TOS crew, it may be logic to delay the TNG shows/movies and jump into the JJ Abrams Star Trek trilogy starting from the 2009 while the crew is "fresh" on your mind.

My first watch of one of your reaction videos. It was a suggestion by KZbin, and of one of my favorite movies. My friends and I saw this the day it came out. During the final battle, I was tempted to scream "Get those shields up now!" Then I saw it 7 more times in the theater. So much can be said about this movie. It's a reflection of the end of the Cold War. Chang's line of "Don't wait for the translation, answer me now" is verbatim what the US ambassador to the UN told the Soviet ambassador at UN headquarters during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kirk and McCoy's lawyer is Worf's grandfather played by Michael Dorn. Most Enterprise sets were Next Generation sets redressed. The Federation president's office is Ten Forward. Two months before the movie premiered, there was a two episode story on The Next Generation that tied into it, including Spock. The ending has two farewells. The older generation retiring, along with their aging Constitution class starship, to make way for the younger generation on their new ship. Then the TOS cast bidding farewell to their fans.

Star Trek Next Geration with Sir Patrick Stewat playing Captain Jean Luc Picard premiered 1987. This movie was 1991. Kirk's last log of handing off the legacy of all ship's named Enterpise to a next generation referred mainly to the Next Generation series. Kirk was on the Enterprise, and Enterprise A. Picard is on the Enerprise D. The TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise featured the Enterprise C and her crew. The first Star Trek Next Generation movie "Generations" introduced us to the Enterise B which was an Excelcier Class Star Ship, same class of ship Sulu was cataining in this movie.

I dont know, if anyone said it yet.... In the beginning, when Admiral Cartwright (the black Admiral) is giving his hateful, rasist speech, about the Klingons, that scene was written for a black actor, to make it extra haunting. Also, Brock Peters, the actor of Admiral Cartwright, who himself lived through secregation and rasism in his youth, was so disgusted by the Monologe. He couldnt read it in one take. He needed to stop after every sentense.

Awww bless her. 'Second star to the right and straight on til morning' is indeed a reference to Peter Pan, so your (second) instinct was right. The implication being, of course, eternal youth. And Leonard Nimoy directed two Star Trek films - The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home. Wasn't much of a fan of TNG Star Trek, but I'll watch your reactions if you keep going. In terms of references to the original films, you'll find most in the prequel Star Trek (2009) - although the 'Kelvin trilogy' are controversial films. The people who hate those films passionately hate them. I don't hate them, per se. I just think of them as part of an alternate timeline that skews off in another direction.

20:03 Kirk and McCoy are holding a universal translator to their ears...even though Christopher Plummer is speaking English, it's for OUR benefit, he's actually speaking Klingon...there was not enough time for some of the actors to learn the Klingon language. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is an amazing film that symbolizes the end of the Cold War. During a visit with Nicolas Meyer, Leonard Nimoy suggested the idea, “What if the wall comes down in space?” If you look at the contemporary events of the time, the mining accident that caused the explosion of Praxis was inspired by the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986, The Berlin Wall had just fallen in 1989-1990, and this film was released just days before the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. The end of longtime hostilities between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire mirrors that of the United States and the Soviet Union. It shows how peace can be a complicated thing, especially when it concerns career soldiers. Another major theme is change, and how people respond to it. According to Meyer, General Chang and Valeris represent those who cling to their old ways as they are frightened by the prospect of such sudden and dramatic changes. The references and influences of Shakespeare’s works are also a brilliant touch as both William Shatner and Christopher Plummer are Shakespearean actors. The title for this movie even comes from a passage in Hamlet’s famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy in which the phrase “Undiscovered Country” refers to the afterlife, our lack of knowledge about it, and our fear of it. I could see some parallels between Azetbur and Captain Kirk. Both are deeply mistrustful of the their opposing sides, and while Kirk lost his son, she lost her father. The climax at Camp Khitomer is a truly great moment as Kirk and Azetbur are able to emphasize with each other’s grief. In spite of Kirk’s past prejudices towards the Klingons, he defended the peace process and spoke of her father’s hope for better relations between their people. Their goodwill towards each other at the end restores the faith of Gorkon and David. Star Trek VI is a beautiful send-off to the original crew of the Enterprise. You gave a great reaction to one of my favorite Star Trek films. Thank you!
