Some of the events in "The Undiscovered Country" were written to parallel real world events. The Klingons vs the Federation was always a mirror of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. The destruction of Praxis mirrors the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. The treaty between the Federation and Klingons and the ceasing of hostilities (no more Neutral Zone) mirrors the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. I recommend any video of director Nicholas Meyer speaking. He also wrote The Voyage Home, and wrote and directed Wrath of Khan. He was ignorant of Star Trek ("the pointy ear guy") when he took over Wrath of Khan, writing the complete screenplay, without credit, in 12 days based on a collection of former drafts with different stories. He has turned into one of the franchise's most staunch defenders. His first movie, Time After Time (1979) also stars David Warner, and is a time travel story along the lines of The Voyage Home. His TV film, The Day After (1983) remains one of the most realistic depictions of the effects of nuclear war, and was watched by something like 100 million people the night it aired, still a record in its class.

We all know that Mr. Data is a Sherlock Holmes fan, but in real life, this movie's director--Nicholas Meyer--is a Sherlock Holmes fan, too. (He was inducted into the Sherlock Holmes society, The Baker Street Irregulars.) Meyer also directed "The Wrath of Khan" and wrote "The Voyage Home." He's also associated with "Star Trek: Discovery." Regarding Sherlock Holmes, Meyer wrote the Holmes novel, "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution," three sequel novels, and the screenplay for its 1976 movie adaptation. That movie featured three actors who eventually co-starred together in the ST--TNG episode, "Family." Meyer has noted similarities between Holmes and Kirk (whereas most people compare Holmes with Spock.) Meyer observed that both Sherlock Holmes and Jim Kirk grow bored, restive, and frustrated whenever they're not engaged in some case, mission, or adventure. Once they're on the case, they both come alive! Meyer also directed the 1979 film, "Time After Time" which featured future Star Trek film co-stars Malcolm McDowall and David Warner. That movie was also peppered with several Sherlock Holmes in-jokes! Meyer snuck in a Sherlock Holmes homage in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country when Spock remarks, "An ancestor of mine once said, 'Eliminate the impossible and whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.'" That "ancestor" of Spock's was the human, Sherlock Holmes and that quote was one of Holmes' most famous maxims!

In 1957, Christopher Plummer was playing the lead role in "Hamlet" at the Stratford Festival when he was hospitalized with kidney stones. For the performances he could not make, his understudy filled in for him; a young fellow named William Shatner. They had been friends ever since

Hailing frequencies open: Cami thank you for your reactions and watching Star Trek:TOS series and the movies. Watching ST VI always makes me emotional. So sad, ..."for parting is such sweet sorrow". Now your next mission from Star Fleet Command is to enter Next Generation Sector of the Star Trek Universe. "Follow the 2nd star to the right, until morning" Ahead Warp factor 1. Hailing frequencies closed.

Many may disagree with me but if I was on a desert island & could only take one movie, this would be it. Over the years I've watched this one probably 40 times & it came on TV tomorrow I would still be excited.

Yes, Please Continue! HOWEVER, before you do.....I definitely recommend you check out several episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" before you watch the next movie "STAR TREK: GENERATIONS". If you are open to doing that then would it be okay if I recommend which episodes of that show you should check out so that it will help you understand many of the things that you see and hear in the next 4 "TNG" movies ?

The box provided for the (commandant?) on Rura Penthe.... reminiscent of the box for Colonel Saito in "The Bride on the River Kwai". So is the Klingon's speech.

And its other Hamlet reference, "The Undiscovered Country." It's the most Shakespearean Star Trek story since TOS' "The Conscience of the King"--another title that's a Hamlet quote!

I dont know, if anyone said it yet.... In the beginning, when Admiral Cartwright (the black Admiral) is giving his hateful, rasist speech, about the Klingons, that scene was written for a black actor, to make it extra haunting. Also, Brock Peters, the actor of Admiral Cartwright, who himself lived through secregation and rasism in his youth, was so disgusted by the Monologe. He couldnt read it in one take. He needed to stop after every sentense.

I've seen this one enough times that I could replay the opening theme in my head as Cami read the credits. Favorite cameo in a movie of all time, Christian Slater on the Excelsior.

The next Star trek movie called Generations and first contact .Those two are great star trek films , but you have to watch the next generation series little bit more to understand the story lines of those movies and the rest that follows those star trek films as well 🍿 👍.

Kirk`s smile at the dinner scene was like "Yeah, this is exactly how I expecting it to go." :)

Yes, that line at the end was from Peter Pan. 28:16 Christian Slater was a big Trekkie, and for the final movie with the original cast, he asked his agent to get him part. He said he didn't care if it was a cameo, he just wanted to be part of it. The Klingon defense council was played by Michael Dorn, who also played Worf, a major character in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine series. I've really enjoyed watching these movies with you. If you haven't seen the original series, I'd recommend you go back and watch those. The next movie is the first one featuring the Next Generation cast, though a few of the original cast do make appearances. If you decide to continue with them, I'll be here for it.

Christian Slater also had an 'in' to get a cameo in this movie: his mother Mary Jo was the casting director 😄 2:54

Yes. Colonel Worf is likely Mogh's father and Worf's grandfather. Camp Khitomer would be where the Klingon/Federation Khitomer Accords were drawn up, creating their great alliance and fulfilling the prophecy of the Organians that the two powers would one day work together as fast friends.

Fun fact: the Klingon defense attorney was played by Michael Dorn. He did such an excellent job that he was brought in for the new Star Trek series as ‘Worf’, great grandson of the defense councilor that we see here.

ST:VI came out in 1991, TNG started in 1987. Michael Dorn was brought in as a sort of "Easter Egg" for fans and to reinforce the bridge between TOS and TNG in a sense.

I learned about General Chang's eyepatch from the computer game Klingon Academy, he was a professor at that school, makes Starfleet look like candy land, and Chang boarded a fellow Klingon vessel, challenged the captain to a fight to the death, the captain scoffed this isn't the academy, we are not your students, then Chang retorted, you flaunt your cowardice in front of your men?? Then of course, the captain finally relented and fought, he gouged out Chang's eye, but Chang killed the Captain in the end. Won the respect of the crew, helped stopped the brief war between the houses,

20:03 Kirk and McCoy are holding a universal translator to their ears...even though Christopher Plummer is speaking English, it's for OUR benefit, he's actually speaking Klingon...there was not enough time for some of the actors to learn the Klingon language. The man you heard translating it is Todd Bryant, he played Commander Klaa ("I....apologize".) in "Star Trek V"

This movie gets me all sort of ways... To understand The Klingons, you have to wish them to die. But in the End, they truly understand from there point of view. Also, at the end of the Movie when they said they want them back at Stardock to be decommissioned the ship- If you look closely at Kirk, you can see his shed a Tear. Very Heartbreaking Emotional..

Christopher Plummer was cast as Chang as a favor for Shatner. They had known each other since 1948, when they attended the same acting school in Montreal. Shatner wanted his final adversary to be someone he had a personal relationship with.
