Thank you SO much for this. I was good to see what was keeping this sucker trapped in the enclosure. For anybody like me who just wants to get the drive out without messing around with a butterknife (or safer pry tool)... 1) Take the strip off as mentioned in the video. I found it easiest to start from the bottom and work my way up, as you can exploit a bit of a gap for leverage. 2) Get a pair of needle nose pliers and break the plastic strands seen ~2:28. 3) Use the pliers as leverage - forcing them open will pop open / break the enclosure without damaging the drive. 4) Wiggle the drive out as seen in the video.

Great vid mate. I used a regular razor to get the bezel off and then a flat-head to pick the clips. I'm amazed a Seagate used to make stuff that lasted.

Cool. If you are gentle, and take your time, you can pull the enclosure apart without breaking any clips! The harder part is putting it back together again because the side strip with the Seagate logo on it is a bit stubborn and you will need to use the pry tool to lift the case up to get it to snap back into place rather than simply pressing it down. Use a razor blade to lift the label to avoid tearing it. You don't need to fork out any money to buy a special tool to do it ... I used a wide butter knife from the kitchen drawer. The disk that was in the enclosure is now in my PC, and the disk that was in my PC is now is the enclosure, and you cannot tell that the enclosure has been opened. The 4TB Seagate Backup Drive cost me $90 second hand on eBay who offer a money back guarantee. Much better than buying a new drive for $250 with no enclosure. Plus, I get to add the replaced 2TB drive to my NAS. Perfect! Don't forget to make sure your back up your data first though, in case something goes horribly wrong!

Thanks for the video mate, I brought a new USB enclosure from Jaycar and my drive is fine and data secure, I've had three of these, similar desktop drives from Seagate, twice the daughter board attached to the drive had died and this time the "Proprietary" USB connector on the drive was no longer working. Buying WD from now on that's for sure. Thanks again :)

Awesome, though I recommend an enclosure with an aftermarket drive inside.

I know this is an old vid, and a long shot, but do you think replacing the SATA adapter would work on this if it powers on, but it doesn't show up on my computer?

Hi can you use this drive internally without any adapter
@ItsBinhRepaired Жыл бұрын
Sure
@liefsillion28258 ай бұрын
Yep! No problem. I recommend that you perform a full format on the drive though (not Quick Format) to ensure there are no bad sectors or anything like that on the drive. This operation took a full day for a 4TB drive using Windows 11! You will find that big drives are much more useful when they are connected to the internal SATA ports than when connected via external USB ports. i.e ~130 MB/s sustained data transfer rate for video files compared to ~40MB/sec or maybe ~80 MB/s. Using the USB ports on the motherboard helps because the cables used to connect the ports on the case are often of inferior quality and not up to the job. Lots of small files slow everything down but for 1GB video files you should be able to get close to the maximum sustained data transfer rate of the drive.

Yes, but you will have to mount the SSD in a 3.5 inch bracket or it will rattle around in there and could get dislodged! More to the point, why would you want to? An SSD has a much higher data transfer rate than a HDD and connecting it via a slow-poke USB port is going to cripple it, so that would be a waste of money invested in a fast SSD. It is better to connect SSDs to a SATA port on the motherboard.

I was wondering if the bottom piece can be used as a usb dock for other laptop and desktop drives. Why i am asking is because i tried it on a desktop drive 4tb seagate but it kept connecting and disconnecting a couple of time and when it finally connected the partitions were not shown and in disk management it showed 16,000gb. Luckily the drive wasnt damaged. Now im afraid to try anything .
