In Australia, it depends on where you live when it comes to visiting somebody's home unannounced. I live in a country town in Far North Queensland and sometimes people will just turn up at a friend or relatives' house. Usually, it's older people, who probably don't have your mobile phone number, so they can't text you. Of course you should bring something to drink with you. When it comes to flowers, it depends on who's home you're visiting. In Australia, it's customary to bring some sort of dessert with you as well. Cake is the most popular choice. An older Dutch gentleman who lives in Australia used to bring a black forest cake with him when he came and to visit us. In general, don't visit someone when it's time for lunch or dinner unless they've invited you to.

You're doing great learning Dutch. My mom has lived in The Netherlands for 40 years now and still mixes up de/het/een. She is from Opole, Poland. There's nothing like being bi-lingual. It makes learning other languages so much easier, even when they are very different. I learned Polish from talking with her but mostly when I stayed with my grandparents every Christmas and Summer-holiday. I didn't go to school in Poland, so I am terrible at writing Polish. So many c's, s's and z's. A very common name, like Bob Smith, for example is: Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz. I can read it very slowly and speak it at a level of a 14 year old. Understanding it I can do well, though I can lose track when a conversation picks up pace. I had the same problem when I moved from Amsterdam to Zeeland at 16 to an area where most people spoke dialect. The first week I couldn't even understand my Dutch teacher, lol. The friends I made spoke so quickly I had to pay close attention to when they were. It appeared I was adept at languages because I got straight A's in French and German as well. Because I had been playing so many video games since a very young age I finished the coursebook for my English-class in the first week, so my teacher handed me a book to read. Got a 10/10 on my finals cause they round up if you get 9,5 or higher and I got a 9,6. I enjoy learning other languages. I even consider rural Australian a separate language after spending several years there because it has so many quirky words people use. I wish I had applied myself more to learn math, physics and chemistry though. Because that's where my hobbies lie. Unfortunately for some reason I struggled a lot with algebra and chemical reaction formulas. I do love reading about scientific discoveries and even quantum-mechanics, although I will never understand the math.

@BetterTogether-UnIr117 күн бұрын
You are absolutely right. It’s a common mistake, but one that many Americans are aware of. Rocksville (the former name of Holland, PA) was renamed to Holland in 1870 with the building of a postal office due to the many Dutch settlers in the area who settled in 17th and 18th century. Holland, Michigan was settled in 1847 by Dutch Calvinist separatists, under the leadership of Dr. Albertus van Raalte, who were escaping from persecution in the Netherlands. So these two places were, indeed, Dutch and not German. 😊

11:21 small correction, we do use credit cards, but Dutch credit cards work differently. All credit taken out has to be paid off in one go at the end of the month, there are no options to pay off credit in steps. And indeed many small shops don't accept creditcards (Visa/Mastercard/Amex), but that's because the Netherlands has a weird history when it comes to payment cards, with Maestro being the standard. Maestro is being phased out Visa/Mastercard (but not Amex) will be widely accepted in 1-2 years though. I've used creditcard for big purchases in the Netherlands like furniture, a new PC or a new TV, so I could get my salary before that credit was taken out of my bank account. Other than that, I mostly have a creditcard for when I'm traveling, as Dutch Maestro Cards are usually only accepted in ~half the shops in Europe, and almost nowhere outside Europe.

Neither do I, paying with CC doesn't mean that I don't have the money. But I have most of my money invested into ETFs and converting that back into liquid cash is somewhat of a hassle and actually costs me more money (due to brokerage fees) than simply moving a payment to a date after which I've received my next salary. Thankfully we all have the freedom to take care of our finances as we wish, as long as that means the bills are paid on time of course.😉

You don't really have to bring gifts when you visit. It's also a bit where and when you know people from. If it is more common when you're invited to a dinnerparty. But if you're just catching up with a friend at their home, it's not standard. Some friends I do try and some I don't. If I see people not that regular, I make more of an effort. But If I see people regular it's not necessary. Unless you feel better by doing it. But it also sets the standard to them. Keep it special when you want to do it and don't treat it as a duty.

Unfortunately, there are places where pedestrians need to use the bike lane (often in between the cities) because there are no separate places for pedestrians. The idea is that (in that case) you walk in the opposite direction so you can see the bikes. And I see more pedestrians wearing reflective suits with lights so they are easier to spot.

Hello Charlie, I'm French and I saw in one of your videos that you had Basque blood! The Basque country is wonderful with - both the sea and the mountains and very beautiful landscapes! A unique culture and traditions - a unique architecture with houses with a white façade, shutters and balconies made of red wood, - a single language that is not of Indo-European origin like other European languages and that has been preserved despite the Roman invasion. The Basques were friends of the Romans and the Romans did not force them to speak Latin - a tradition of singing with very beautiful men's choirs - traditional sports such as Basque pelota and Basque games, which are games of strength. In France, we say "strong as a Basque" - its gastronomy with, among others, Bayonne ham and Espelette pepper - its festivals such as the Bayonne festivals. The beret originates from the Basque country. It was worn by shepherds to protect themselves from the sun, rain, etc. I am talking about the French Basque country because I am from the north of France and I have never been to the Spanish Basque country If you do a search on "le pays basque", you should find beautiful documentaries.

I do not agree with number 1. Yes, everyone can speak English, but not everyone speaks it well enough to have a complicated conversation with a native speaker from the US. So if they say yes, the speaker often thinks that he/she can continue and speak fast and even use slang words in a conversation. Some people can handle that, others cannot. So do not start in very fast native English, but ask simple short questions and check if it is understood. Only if you know for sure that their English is on your level, you can speak fast. If people say no, it is often because they are not confident when it comes to speak in English. The agenda driven ´culture´ is modern, it is not typical Dutch. It has to do with women and men working during the day and having to do everything else in their spare time. Before, when there were still ´housewives´and nobody had a phone (unless he had a business) people came unexpected at coffee time (in the morning) or tea time (in the afternoon). It was not common to come at lunchtime or dinnertime without an invitation because people were poor. They could not always afford extra dinners for visitors, and therefore it was seen as not polite. Yes, we are more direct than other cultures, but it is not polite to be unnecessarily rude to other people. If someone asked me: ´Does this shirt looks nice on me´ and I do not think it does, I would definitely say so because my opinion is asked. I would not comment about the shirt if my opinion was not asked, because the shirt is ugly. If I do like the shirt, I would make an honest comment, saying that it looks beautiful. I do not like to be lied to, and I would assume that other people do not like that either.

The letting people out before entering is disregarded by a lot of people at shopping malls, so it's not a golden rule. But to me those are just rude people or they were raised badly. Worse is when smokers stand right next to the entrance/exit, like they couldn't have picked a worse spot to spread their smoke. Probably totally oblivious to what they are doing.

Most Dutch people speak English.. it's almost the closest related language to the Dutch language. Only Frisian is closer! There is a but... Talking English to communicate to an English speaking, short stay, tourist from all over the world... NO PROBLEM. Talking English to someone who wants to settle in The Netherlands and lives here a while... yes that is a problem. Lots of Dutch people also speak some German, French or another language. Dutch are used to learn another language to communicate with other people and more or less they expect the same from others. When I went to to Czechia some years ago I learned saying the welcome messages.. like good morning, please etc. and counting. It opened doors that stayed closed to other tourists. Literally a German, speaking German to a Czech campsite owner, was refused. I was prepared there was no place for us.. but I started in Czech... and there was enough place. It appeared the Czech camp owner was from an original German speaking family. He had no problem with the language but with the attitude of the German man before me. btw I love the calm and clear presentation of Mike. Lots of USA KZbinrs rattle like they are trying to sell something.

3:07 Je spreekt Engels? Isn't actually correct. People will probably still understand what you mean because they can tell you aren't a native speaker, but if you make a question then the verb will always be in front of the sentence. Unless you use words like who (wie) what (wat) where (waar) when (wanneer) how (hoe). So with the verb in front it will be "Spreek je Engels?" Because je is behind the verb you don't get a +t either. Some stuff to make the language complicated. 😅

Charlie I wish you and your family a een geweldig en fantastisch nieuw jaar. I don’t mind speaking English but if I’m at a cafe or restaurant and the waiter would speak English to me I would ask for another waiter and if not I will leave. Coffee shops do sell coffee though, but (I’m not a coffee drinker) I think it’s not the best. Oops I put a and een after each other they are same word, sorry my bad
@Frahamen17 күн бұрын
It's "spreek je Engels?" you have to switch the verb and the subject for a question. Although if you ask it was a stated sentence and question intonation people will understand it, it will just sound like you're not very good in speaking Dutch, then again, they would know that anyway by you asking if they can speak English.
@WednesdayAddams9010 күн бұрын
some things a correct, but most of the time people don't bring something when they come over, calling it holland doesn't matter, people in general have no problem talking in english when the other person doesn't speak dutch. Only the people who don't speak it very well or are insecure about it rather not speak it. My english isn't great and I'm always afraid I say something dumb with people from which english in the first language, but I still do it when the other one doesn't speak dutch. I will make more mistakes and get a stutter or think a little longer, because I'm scared but that doesn't mean I will refuse to speak english. You do what is the most benefitial to the both of you. Sometimes people can understand dutch, but don't speak it very well themselves and the other way around, then one speaks dutch the other english and it's not a problem. The rest is correct.
