Visit Australia and make a comparison. I live in Melbourne, Victoria where we have abundant public transport, we don't need to tip, the wages are good and bosses are not bullies which makes working almost a pleasure. Aussies work to live and we have minimum 4 weeks paid annual leave plus 2 weeks paid sick leave per year.

Two weeks sickleave???? But what if you are sick two months? Here in Finland the sickleave is unlimited. You just have to visit doctor and if they say you can not work yet, your paid sickleave goes on.

@@Manselikka Two weeks paid. We don't quite have all of Europe's employment conditions. We can take more but you might have to scrounge around for other paid leave i.e. your holiday leave or if you've got any long service leave up your sleeve which you can take pro rata after 7 years with one employer. It's 3 months for 10 years service which is about 2 months after 7. But no, it's not indefinite paid sick leave but then few people are sick enough to need that much time off and individual employers will accommodate on an individual basis depending on circumstances. Then of course if you're injured/get sick due to a work reason, there's no limit to paid leave.

I'm Swedish and went to college in Santa Monica, CA, and agree with almost everything in this video. I never went outside of California so I can't say anything about the weather in the Mid West, but other than that, yeah pretty much as he says. Though I love the people. Very normal and down to earth. Kind.

I agree with the first part, "few hours drive = lives close to me" being a very US citizen comment to make since its a fact that everything is a couple of hours drive away, a couple of hours driving is "close" to them, it's what is closest by. [not just the US however] And that is why there is the comparing of US with EU, European countries = European states. There is an European constitution/the Constitutional treaty. The second part is not 100% true, I'm from South Limburg Netherlands, if I want to go to Amsterdam [the capital city of NL] is 2-3 hours away.... If I want to go to Germany or Belgium ony 15 - 30 minutes. It all depends still on where you live and are going towards. It still takes time to get from location A to B in space. Going from Maastricht to Paris is 3-4+ hr up to 6 hrs drive, also depending on the traffic and where exactly you are going. Going from Maastricht to Berlin by car, depending on traffic is 5 hours and 50+ minutes - but can take up to 6-7 hours as well. Going from Maastricht to Prague 6-7 hours drive, again depending on the trafic. And again can take up to 8-9 hours as well. And if you ask me all these numbers are very optimistic it always took me the longer times that I gave with this.

Back in the early 70s, the company I worked for was taken over by an American company. One of the first things they did was put locks on a couple of the toilets and issued keys to the supervisors. The supervisors refused to lock them.

(and the notion that somehow if workers could freely go to the toilet whenever they want, that they'd hide out in the toilets and do nothing, it's based on a very insulting view of workers.) Any supervisor worth their salt of course knows better, and wouldn't want people to waste time having to look for a supervisor to get the key, bother them for it, go to the toilet, and then have to waste more time to return the key...

@@grahvis As an oldie I remember watching US movies where an employee would earn the key to the 'Executive Washroom' which was a special privilege apparently. I'd think, well we all do our business the same way, why do they need a special bathroom to do it in? Kids logic I suppose but I found it weird.

The top 3 things I don't like living in the US as a European are....drumroll......Smalltalk,I mean,with like literally everyone,just leave me tf alone LOL.The 2nd one is...why are 99% of restaurants part of a chain,if you find a place to eat here that has personal charm and individuality,well you found a unicorn.The top one tho is....Potholes,the states in the US let's you hit these deep holes on a daily bacis year in and year out,I mean....wtf is that all about????It's like millions of people on the government/state payrole that actually could spend a few days of fixing it,it's not rocket science.Otherwise I've been assimilating pretty well 😋

Can snow much here in Norway too, and you should go skiing, its good training. I have a teori of USA: They dont have public healtincurans (creating Karens and stress (when you dont have work)) You Police, court, and prison system are outdated, gunlaws, no workersunion, no mixed zoning everywhere. Save up money and move to Nederlands that you want to do

The fact that members of the public can sue you if the "sidewalk" outside your home hasn't been cleared of snow, pretty much sums up how insane your country is. 😂 And if you are so car dependant, why don't you guys get winter tyres, snow chains, and learn how to drive in those conditions, like we do in all of the Alps, and all of Scandinavia, and Finland. 🤯

I (living in the Alps) one time slipped when attaching the snow chains. Chains hit my damn face, I broke my wrist when I fell and I sued no one. Just woke everyone up by swearing preeetty loudly and quite long, but I think that's fair enough.

I live in Croatia, in a ghost village where 2/3 of the houses are empty. Some will have moved to Zagreb but others will have gone to other countries, attracted by the higher salaries. I wonder if they are really better off or spending the extra earnings on rent / mortgage payments?

I've literally gotten drunk with colleagues in my boss's living room before going clubbing, had drinks in the store after hours with another and formed a conga line behind a third during opening hours. And those were just from when I worked in retail in my 20s. 😂 I've had one US style boss and trust me I didn't last long with that regime (but then again neither did she 😏). I would NEVER work like that again - even despite our six weeks of paid vacation time. [Side note: We do however also have a good social security net to fall back on just in case unlike in the US]

The only book that was banned for decades in the Netherlands was Hitler's Mein Kampf. I still read it though in the university library. But that was only allowed because it fit my study (political science). I had to read it inside the library. It was not worth it. You could buy it in Antwerp Belgium though (the royalties went to the country of Bavaria, oddly enough).

If I recall Hitler's personal wealth came from the royalties from that book as everyone in Germany at least wanted to be seen to own one whether they read it or not. Ditto his photographs. He shared the royalties for those with his personal photographer who got rich up until it all went belly up. Next to Linz in Austria, Munich was a Hitler favourite so it doesn't surprise me Bavaria ended up with the royalties. I bought a copy (I'm Australian) to see what the fuss was about and was bored to tears.

Clearing snow leads to icing, I hope they grit the roads. Ideally, they'd do the pavements, but then the council where I am doesn't give a crap about your journey if you aren't using the road either.

Interesting, you get more snow there than we do here in what is often called "the best winter wonderland" of Finland, our annual average is 94 cm, but that is an average across the entire country which if you put Finlands map over the US, it stretches all the way from Pensylvania down to Florida So there's quite a major difference between the southern and northern regions, were we to take only the northern half into consideration I think the number would be quite a bit higher, specially considering the top third of the country is in the Arctric circle You guys need to come here and learn about winter driving, here you have to takea course specifically on driving in slippery conditions, just to get your license, sounds like that is something you guys should implement in the midwest as well

I remember my neighbour locked himself out of his flat drunk and tried to break in, but he broke my window instead of his own. I am imagining trying to walk home in an American suburb. Imagine someone leaves their door open, and you are so wasted you don't realize it isn't your house and try to climb into bed next to them or something, end up getting shot!

About teens being addicted to their phones: I think that's not wrong, but it's not different than being addicted to sugar. It has become so normal that most aren't even aware of it - until you take it away. I'm a millenial and nearing my 40s, i don't necessarily need my phone or a tablet all the time. But that's because as soon as i get home i turn on my PC before anything else. I once had to spend 4 days without internet (and that was the first 4 days of the first Corona lockdown too) cause some construction worker accidentally destroyed the internet cable that provides my area. I think that would be similar for a teen to get their phone taken away. Those were the 4 most annoying, boring and anxious days of my life. I really felt like an addict being left hanging. And yeah, once i had my internet back i was celebrating. So, long story short: Kids are addicted to their phones, and that's not surprising at all and absolutely not something the kids are to blame for. It is still adults, mostly middle aged men, who invent, build and sell that stuff to the kids. Just you wait till Gen Alpha grows up, they will be one single entity with their phones.

I agree, Living in Indiana is.......hardly worth mentioning. Compare that with American Siberia (aka. Minnesota.) where the average coldest US place is called 'Embarrass'. And don't get me started on Snow Emergencies, ploughing schedules and towaway schemes (read: extortionate additional municipal revenue generation.) in addition to enduring the infamous and deleterous medical condition of Snow-Plough back (not from the honourable slavery of clearing ones own sidewalk but from the monumental toil of digging out the massive ice and snow dams in the driveway. I left that particulaly unpleasant corner of Hell 9 years ago, but I am still receiving the severe weather alerts despite having repeatedly informed Satan and Beelzebub of municipal services of my continetal move. I gather that they keep sending those messages out of demonic spite and intentionally stirring up my bad memories.

11:35 That is what I loved about my boss in my previous job here in Germany. He knew his skills and our skills. He couldn't help us directly if something happened because of the specialisation in the IT field. Instead, he would shield us from any manager who tried to pester us. Especially if a major incident had occurred and we needed to focus, and yes, I experienced him dressing down a manager of the more dese variety out in the office area while I was buying, rebooting and resetting servers for a customer. A short time later, our boss was joking with us as we waited for the next problem. (Server Operations Centre with a main focus like a fire brigade to respond if any kind of disruption occurs.)

As bad as clima change is, when i saw that about the weather i remember that 35-40 years ago we had also still something similiar here in the winters and i'm really happy we don't have that anymore. Yeah remember how it was sliding with my car from the road sometimes and all that stuff. Or how driving at night with constant snowfall could really drive you insane.
