I purchased an Axis recently and have done a few whole home scans. I use it with an Samsung S21 Ultra. The main issue I have found is that shooting in the Matterport phone app overheats the phone so much that I have trouble capturing an entire ~2000sqft house in one shoot. Hopefully software updates in the future will improve this aspect, though as it's stands it is a dreadful app. For professional photographers this would definitely not be an option regularly, I also feel that real estate agents expect their photographers to have the high end gear, rather than capturing with a $79 Axis.

This is enlightening. I haven't considered 3D house tour until i started my research into real estate photography and found some real estate websites with 3D tours. Thank you for this information.

I am actually interested to get it as backup or night shoots, since it creates sharper images then a 360 camera ! You can get it now for free if you can a 1 year plan :~) Actually surprised how sharp the images are with my 360 Inch camera ! but $900 expense. I should take some great photos at night or dark properties since phones are very light sensitive

I guess I will say after testing it once and after watching your review, I think it will be a backup device. I only use the Theta Z1 and only have that for Matterport scans. I also own a Theta V but haven't used it since I've owned the Z1 and probably won't use it as a backup. The only negative for the Z1 is that it's so easy to scratch the lenses and from what I found is it's not easy to fix so you have to purchase a new Z1. The Z1 took a tumble a while back and there is a scratch on the lens but so far it hasn't been a huge problem to make me purchase a new one. THANK YOU ELI! You are AWESOME!

Hi Jim! The Theta V image quality is severely degraded once uploaded to the Matterport system. I switched from that to the Axis system and now I'm happy with the results. We also use a theta Z1 and have found that quality to be just as good as this as a backup.

I'd lay odds that a more substantial tripod would solve a lot of the stitching issues. You can see the unit shaking in the video. I use a different system and almost immediately upgraded the tripod to a more substantial one. Almost eliminated stitching problems.

I just recently had a real estate brokerage in my area ask if we provide Matterport for the first time. Traditionally we only provide video and photo services which is where we have invested our money so far. Based on your review, it sounds like the Axis would be a great place to start and see if we can gain any traction in this area before investing in something of higher quality. Thank you for your feedback and thoughts on this product.

Maybe a stupid question but here goes: I am a photographer, and I have no desire to make a 3D model of anything. I just want a motorized tripod mount to take great 360 photos. Does Matterport’s Axis (or any of their other equipment) do 360 panorama without the dollhouse modeling, or is it strictly for commercial applications?

Same question I'd like to use it for 360 photos also and bring them into Lightroom or Photoshop

If you are a photographer and want to take some really nice 360° photos, forget about Matterport. Go see Nodal Ninja: real equipment for professionals, with motorized heads.

The two biggest issues with the Matterport Axis from my experience are overheating with an iPhone 12 Pro Max from Lidar scanning a complete house and the time it takes to scan with Lidar. I'm hoping with the iPhone 14 Pro the scans will be somewhat faster and the overheating won't be as often. The Lidar scans causes my iPhone 12 Pro Max to get quite hot and a message comes up in the Matterport App saying the scanning has been paused until the phone cools down. This can take 10-20 minutes unless you cool down the phone by putting it on a portable ice pack for cooler (no joke). I will say the results have been very good from what I've done but the overheating and time it takes to do lidar scans with the 12 Pro are frustrating. Enjoyed your video review and experience with the Matterport Axis! Cheers

Hi, thank you for your video. It was very useful for me. Do you think that with my iPhone 11 Pro Max I can scan the space just as well? How does the software deal with darker areas where the light is missing? thank you

I tried the app on my 14 pro and the preview image doesn’t seem very good. Does it improve once you upload the scan for processing?

Great video! I currently have the Insta360 X3 & find that it's hard to get a high res image in lower light rooms. Are there external lights that can be used for this or would it be best to get a better camera such as the Insta360 One RS 1 Inch or the Theta Z1?

I am having the same issue with my insta360 X3. I was curious to know if using an iphone 14pro will deliver better results

What is the distance it can reach between scans? is it like the pro 2 where its 5-6ft apart for scans or can it be as far as the new pro3?

I dont know what it is when I use the Rocoh and insta360 cameras on Matterport it seems like they degrade the image quality a ton. When using "thier" system I get far better results.

Good info, thanks for this °¬) We're selling our house and I'll be doing all the photos (I'm a photographer and film maker). Do you reckon it's worth getting the Axis to provide a 3d house tour of our place? Do you think it helps in selling enough to bother? Obviously I'll be making a really nice film of the property. Thx.

I am just starting out with virtual tours and got the axis to use before I decided on a camera...... This thing is garbage! The screw that tightens the ruler portion on, stripped almost immediately. The part that you can adjust the phones position/angle is adjusted by notches, and I had to constantly re-adjust the phone to match up with the circles, but the notches made it difficult to get it exactly where it needed to go. The tri-pod as you said, is hardly worth $10. During the scanning of the homes after 2 rooms my phone would overheat and a message would pop up with a warning so I would have to keep stopping. The scans seemed to take forever to do. It was an absolute disaster and it's getting returned.

Is it possible to make the Axis operate without connecting to a mobile device? I want to use it with my iPad
@JimFelderOKC2 жыл бұрын
I’m gonna guess no at this point. I’m not sure it would be stable enough to hold an iPad.

in one scan where the rotator stops 6 times in a scan, will the rotator continue to rotate from one stop to the next without the dot and circle always being aligned (as long as the first dot and circle are aligned)? I want to use the rotator for my iPad (I have my own custom designed holder) but the iPad capture app doesn't support Axis, so I'm thinking to pair the rotator with my android phone (holding it in my hand without actually rotating it after getting the rotator to start rotating)

Who might use it- Designers, contractors, architects, engineers, landscape architects, anyone that wants to remember a space better than photos or anyone not needing a $3K camera. That's easy. Cost nothing and saves your ass. It might be an oversight not trying the full scan mode, it adds a ton of data to a scan. Again I'm not trying to scan whole houses, I have no use for that and 90% of people live so sloppily that it'd be pointless. People who scan homes for a living seem to be fixated on capturing a house in a state it will never be lived in ever, no thanks. The Axis is for smaller remodel jobs, limited scope, as-built documentation just to name a few.
