I really miss Comiskey. I loved that ballpark. At one time Chicago was the Mecca of classic stadiums in the U.S. We had Comiskey Park, Wrigley Field, Chicago Stadium and Soldier Field (before renovation) all being used at once.

@𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 In my many years I've been to the original Yankee Stadium, Shea. the Polo Grounds, the Metro Dome, Kaufman Stadium (KC), County (Milwaukee), Beloit, Midway (St Paul), Parade Grounds (Minneapolis). Been to many amateur venues as well. The absolute greatest baseball stadium I ever went to was the original Comiskey Park. It had the best baseball atmosphere of all the parks I ever attended. I could blind fold anyone, put him in the parking lot or any other part of Comiskey, and he would know he was in a baseball field. The smell of popcorn, of hot dogs/mustard, of the grass, of everything and whammo - you know you're in a ballpark. What an atmosphere! The folks there really knew and appreciated the game of baseball. Folks in the Windy City are true baseball fans. So great to watch the game there back in the day.

Played there in 1970, winning the Chicago Public League baseball championship for Fenger HS. It's a wonderful memory my teammates and I will never forget.

Part of the issue with The Cell always was when it was built. It was one of the few “modern” baseball stadiums ever built and immediately following its opening came Camden Yards which ushered in the “Retro Classic” stadiums that have become so popular. And then the Sox kept renovating the stadium to give it a more retro vibe, which no matter how much you do, you’re just never going to get.

I still get pissed thinking about how Tito Landrum hit his only home run of the year in the Britt Burns 10 inning pitching duel and they got drummed out by the Orioles who played Philadelphia in the World Series

This is a fitting tribute to Comisky park. Having seen a game there, while I was visiting in 1989, I have fond memories of the place. I’m from Arizona, and the Diamondbacks didn’t exist yet. I had never seen a baseball game “In person”. I realized we couldn’t have this open-air stadium for baseball games in Arizona. At least, not on most days in the summer……

I was a very young boy when we went to a game at Comisky Park at night in 1968. There were police with German Shepherd dogs and long shot guns outside and I was shocked. Soon after we went back east from our visit to Chicago, the riots broke out in full force. It was my first exposure to the dire conditions of the African American communities in inner cities and the brink of social upheaval. The game went on without any incidents that night, played the Twins. I still remember that sight quite clearly. The sight lines were very good despite my father getting the cheapest seats possible because he had five sons and worked hard for his paycheck.

I worked at both US cellular and wrigley field in the press box as a camera man. I’m not a huge baseball fan but I did enjoy going to both parks. When I was a wrigley I felt as though I was in a time warp while at us cellular felt like a serious place of business.

I visited Comiskey Park many times as a child in the 1980s. I remember the neighborhood being not so great back then. One time a cop saw me and my mom walking through the dark after a game and offered to give us a ride back to our car. I was stoked that I got to ride inside a police car without being arrested. :D

My friend and I visited Chicago in 1990 and we asked a policeman how to get to Comiskey Park. He said "you don't want to go there, it's in the South Side." I'd heard that before but we didn't have any problems.

Nobody calls it Comiskey lol everyone calls it White Sox Park, that's the name it was given when it was built. Jackoff millionaire Charles Comiskey bought the stadium years after it's construction and renamed it after himself as an ego trip. You're right though that a certain age group of people do occasionally still refer to it as "the Cell."

There were also two "West Side Parks" for the Cubs before they moved into Wrigley. Many of the oldest ballclubs had more homes than is generally known. Harry sang in the seventh inning, not the seventeenth. It's Reinsdorf, not Rainsdorf.

I attended that last night game at Comiskey and it was very moving. After the game ended they had rigged "explosives" in some of the lights like in the movie The Natural starring Robert Redford and they used the musical soundtrack to the movie while the explosives were set off. Also, working as a locomotive engineer I would occasionally go past Comiskey during a tour of duty at night in that part of Chicago and I noted how when Reinsdorff owned the Sox only one or two lights would be on but after the new Comiskey was built the lights would burn bright and make it look like daylight. I could only wonder how Reinsdorff went from being so cheap to being so expansive to burn that much electricity. No doubt the city or the state were picking up the electric bill!

It should be noted that the "Infamous Eight" were found innocent in court over the BlackSox scandal and baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who ruled with an iron fist, banned them anyway. I would totally love to see you cover Wrigley field.

I’m from Connecticut. I went to Marquette and started in the fall of 1991. I remember driving through Chicago and seeing the old stadium partially demolished. This made Fenway the oldest park still in use.

Chicago native and Sox fan. Parents had season tickets 82 - 90. I think I attended about 500 games there. Many memories.... 83 All-Star game....Kittle, Luzinski , and Fisk roof shots....83 Playoffs (Tito Landrum !!!!) I would sit down LF line on occasion, especially when Rickey Henderson was in LF , whatever team he was on. Rickey would have running conversations with fans lol. I never liked those mascots (Ribby & Rhubarb) they had , I didn't care for Andy the Clown , either. All in all the ball field at 35th & Shields was a highlight of my time growing up.

Growing up near old Comiskey, when we went to Armor Park to play baseball we would walk down 34th street to get baseballs to play with. The street was full of them because foul balls to the north or 3rd base side would leave the park on occasion. My earliest baseball memory was ‘83. My mother was able to get me a replica White Sox uniform from the same company that supplied the White Sox. I still have it. I also still have a couple of old seats from Comiskey that my dad obtained from the demolition company or someone from the neighborhood with connections. Haha! Having family in the area for over 100 years allowed for some helpful connections. Haha!

It’s one of the best ballparks in 🇺🇸 ⚾️. Never been to Fenway Park but been to Dodger Stadium when is the 2nd oldest ballpark in the National League. Looking forward to that video. As a near-north sider Cubs fan, the only time I went to Comiskey was in June of '61 to see a pro wrestling championship bout between Pat O'Connor ( a native New Zealander ), & "Nature Boy" Buddy Roger's ( inventor of the inescapable "figure-four" leg hold ), along w/ over 38,600 other fans, a wrestling attendance record that would stand for a little over 20 years. I do remember seeing Bill Veeck's exploding scoreboard on TV, w/ fireworks being shot off from it whenever a White Sox player hit a Homer. Good memories ( glad I still have them).

I had made it a goal to visit as many of the older baseball parks starting in the 1980’s. One of the parks I got to prior to demolition was Comiskey Park. As noted the sight lines were great and I enjoyed seeing a game there. It as sad to see it go but that is what was happening to a lot of older parks. The newer corporate owners wanted the latest additions like super boxes and added dining facilities to maximize the revenue they could from a ball park. At least we still have Wrigley field and the Red Sox’s ballpark to enjoy the old flavor of days gone by.

I highly recommend making a video of the Cubs. Interestingly, Wrigley Field is the last remnant of the 1914-1915 Federal League. Also interesting is how Wm Wrigley acquired the stadium. I also recommend making a video of Bill Veeck . Very interesting guy.

Your Dad was 100% correct. When my Dad took us to San Diego Stadium & it's many names, me & my brother felt like we were going to Disneyland. We lived over 100 miles from the stadium but I remember seeing Willie Mc Covey & Dave Winfield hitting skyrocket HR's during batting practice, I was in complete awe. Than I got the news late about them demolishing Jack Murphy stadium. Sad, just the scoreboard was left & where we last sat was paved dirt.

I been there a few times back in the 1980's. I remember back in 1983 it was July or August. That was a hot Summer indeed. So I end up there in the Yankees series. That place was packed and it was very loud. That series was a defining moment. I'm thinking the Yankees got swept. Fast Forward 16 years to 1999. The plat place New Comiskey Park was stale. To many seats. They eventually took out those seats. They played the Twins in that series. Afterwards I saw Big Frank at a restaurant. Someone wanted me while I was eating dinner to go say hi to Frank. I declined since I was a Cubs fan. Years later I would be working for the Cubs

I went to a doubleheader against the Texas Rangers that final season. In the 2nd game Nolan Ryan pitched, saw him warm up in rightfield throwing a football. There was rain in the air and the 2nd game was delayed and most fans left but not me I moved behind home plate in the upper deck and the foul balls straight back almost took my hands off. What fantastic memories of Comiskey Park but it was ageing badly at the end.

As a passionate White Sox fan, my father drove me and my siblings over to the demolished park, had us reach through the fence, and grab a couple of bricks. He later bought one of the old chairs at an auction, and made a display in his office with the bricks we took.

Some correction, when Chewing Gum Field was built, it was built as Weeghman Park. It wasn’t until 1927. In fact another Wrigley Field was actually built before Chewing Gum Field in Chicago was named Chewing Gum. That Wrigley Field also hosted the first MLB night game at Wrigley Field

Been to Comiskey Park twice, both times I sat in the upper deck. Felt like I was right on top of the field. Haven't been to GRF but it doesn't look like a priority.

Disappointed that they just didn't renovate this beauty, especially since years later stadiums like Cleveland, Baltimore, Texas brought back the old school look.

I believe I was 16 going on 17 the year Cominsky park was being torn down. ❤️ that old building.

Their is a Mariano's Food store near 39th and Union now. That area is called Bronzeville. I wonder if their a connection to the Browns baseball team on 39th st
