How did America become a disposable culture? We still explode , tear down, and leave so many places neglected.

To say nothing about the GIANT Crocagators that used to hide in tunnels they dug in the ash heaps and the dozens and dozens of ppl who "disappeared" over the years in and around that dump.

I actually work at an underground bunker for AT&T. It’s still owned and operated by AT&T. It was built back in the early 60s during the Cold War era. Although it does not use communication microwave anymore (obviously) it does still a decent bit of fiber and telephone equipment.

When I moved to Chicagoland in 1988, about 2/3s were very old. They were all beautifully rehabbed by the turn of the millenium. We could take our kids to watch planes at O'Hare (they always knew the wind & which would be best for watching, and are now taking flying lessons) while we had coffee. They were well designed to have one rest area for both directions. I moved away from Chicagoland in 2013. I can't believe they are taking them down. And where are children going to watch planes from the correct angle?🎉

I worked for the NYC schools as a tradesman from 1989-2015. In the early 90s the city schools still burned coal for heat and hot water. By the late 90s into the 2000s mostly all city schools were converted to oil and gas. Prior to the conversion each school had firemen that would shovel and monitor the coal fired boilers on a day and night basis. I remember seeing the loads of coal being delivered and stored in coal bunkers and the spent ash being disposed of in those heavy duty ash cans. Great story on the history of Corona park thanks for sharing.

IIRC, Staten Islanders actually held a vote in the 1950s and REJECTED a direct subway connection to Manhattan. (This would seem to confirm the First Rule of Politics: "COMPLAINING about a problem is always better than solving it" - after a problem is solved, it's no longer there to complain about, campaign about, or fund-raise about.)

Not an excuse, but I read in a study that women do not do well working overnight hours in most jobs except for the medical field I believe. I’m sure there are many wonder women who can handle night jobs with ease, but that’s what the study said. I know the later I’ve had to work the more anxiety I felt wanting to go home and made mistakes 😣 but hats off 2the ladies who ace their work while we’re in bed ✊

I can never forget how eerie it was on that day in September of ‘01, we walked to the park where the bridge can be seen clearly, and so the bridge completely devoid of traffic. It was so quiet, except for the fighter planes passing in the sky back n forth all day. Me and my sister hugged it was so so unreal that day. The time of the 3 day long traffic jam (2010s) which turned out 2b over some stupid Jersey politicians was the WORST! The nonstop honking day n night, drivers clogging the neighborhood (Nyc side) were super aggressive, almost hitting us ppl walking to stores or the subway! There were fist fights and ppls cars breaking down, it felt horrible living near the bridge in that time. My ex had a friend who went to jail in the 80s for 20yrs for grabbing his girl with 2 other guys and threw her off the bridge! Thank goodness she was a strong swimmer and was a lifeguard and SURVIVED the fall somehow and put those guys in jail!

My favorite bridge in the world ❤ growing up blocks away, reminding me of the Eiffel Tower, I’ve driven, rollerbladed, biked, and walked it many times, explored underneath both sides, partied in raves (gwb side), made love, later my sons 1st bday party where they filmed the Big movie (the wish scene) collect GWB art n photography and soon just tattoo it on my forearm so I can see it wen I’m nowhere near it ❤ I love my GWB bridge

I’m 35 and I’ve been a Chicagoan all my life. My mother has only been a driver since I was 5 and was afraid to take expressways for a few years after that. So when she finally did get acquainted with the highways, she avoided toll roads like the plague because “Why pay to drive on the expressway when I can just get there without paying?” So naturally, I grew up with the same mentality and avoided toll roads at all costs. It wasn’t until I started my current job 12 years ago that they started sending me to far away places in the company car on the companies dime and I would have to take the quickest and most efficient route to get there that I started frequently taking toll roads. With this I discovered the Oasis. I absolutely loved these, because on long trips I can drop in for lunch or for a reliable, clean, and plentiful washroom break. And what he didn’t mention in the video is that they’re mostly mirrored inside! No matter which side you came in on, inbound or outbound, the same restaurants on this side are on that side and there are washrooms on both ends so you don’t have to walk a ways to get what you want from an Oasis for most of the restaurants. Some were only on one side, but you probably had more time to kill if you were going there anyway. So sad to see them disappearing like this, they were a real treat for my long work drives.

I grew up just south of Sutro Baths and visited the ruins many times. My grandparents had stories of using the baths when it was open. It’s quite the developed park now. Sadly the Cliff House & Louis’s restaurant have been closed since Covid. About 10 years ago there was a river otter that took up residents in the water of the ruins. He stayed for quite a while & residents named him Sutro. I saw him too. I’ve often wondered what became of him. I didn’t know the other enterprises Adolph Sutro had. Thanks for the education.
