Definitely not the only time. Assassin's Creed II was better than the first one. Mass Effect 2 was better than the first one. Kingdom Hearts 2 was better than the first one. Some would argue Metal Gear Solid 3 is the best one in that whole franchise. There are several examples of a sequel doing much better than its predecessor both in terms of success and reception

Those floating enemies are called "Shulkers," You kill them when they are open for "Shulker Shells" to make a "Shukler Box" to just be able to hold an entire chest in one slot of your hot bar.
