My 1983 John Deere 318 - Setting up for winter, 49 Blower & Plow

I bought my 318 in 1983 and it does have all the safety devices and the seat switch is one of them. It's human nature to get distracted occasionally and it was one of those times that I got knocked out of my seat by a branch and the tractor instantly shut down. I've been a firm believer in this particular safety device ever since!

I have a JD 318, and it has a 50" deck with a broken center mandrel. And bent pulley. Anyone know where to find one on a parted out 318. Need to cut grass !! Help!!

I have a 1984 318 and it has all the modern safety switches. Seat, Neutral, and park switches.

nice unit...just remember to keep your auger full of snow as much as you can with the 49 blower, they will perform a lot better...also it will work better with that sprocket...I have the 318 with the taller shoot and I can tell you that it holds the snow together longer therefore it will toss it further...under good dry conditions it will throw it 28 feet..i just added and welded a taller shoot from a newer blower to my existing shoot collar...good luck...also I have 240 lbs. of weight on the back and no chains....bracket also weighs about 35 lbs...now all I have to purchase is Carlisle bar tires... Gary

on your chute ,use spray wax on it. the smaller chain pulley will speed up your auger speed, to make the snow blower blow better . I am old JD mechanic for these tractors back in the 90ies enjoy your deere this winter..... PS you might becum. frosty the snowman

I think the control lever has 3 settings...UP - DOWN - and FLOAT which is all the way forward?

Awesome 318 .just a tip put as much weight on back as you can! Wheel weights,load the tires ,get a weight bracket with suitcase weights and chains. The more the better!

Nice video, nice rig! One thing that bothers me though. I'm not a fan of safety devices because I think that they can get really redundant and can sometimes cause more problems than if they weren't there. Having sid that, I noticed that you were able to turn on the PTO with an empty seat. That tells me that either you or the PO defeated the seat switch. That can be very dangerous.! I had an experience where I believe the seat switch prevented me from getting seriously injured. I'd put it back!

For anyone wondering, 318's had a seat (PTO) and neutral start safety switch up until the 1989 model year when a brake pedal switch was added.

How did you make out with the model 49 I have a 318 with a 49 and this upcoming winter will be my first with it. Mine has the 32 Tooth gear and the flapper mod on the Auger.

What valve do you turn so you can speed up the turning hydraulics on the plow and do you know what size belt do you run on the snow blower
