Yes! Finally another networking/office video from Tom!

I'am using BackBlaze for offsite backup. It costs only 5$ a month and you get unlimited space for backup. It doesn't have any download or upload limits. You just could install it to your Mac Mini and it would backup all your external drives and Mac Mini drive on the Cloud automatically. So, that could be one option for making offsite backup. And thanks for really entertaining video. These networking videos are the best. :)

Thanks for saving me from the realm of Thursday night boredom, Tom. Great video, really interesting to see the network develop!

You know, its just because it isnt expansive stuff like linus and your just a normal person like us that we like your videos. I bought 3 mac minis for varius server tasks and i got the ideo from you. So thanks and keep making such awesome videos

I would say that very few people make network build vlogs as in depth as you did. That makes it more interesting.

Thanks a lot for your comment James, that's very nice to hear. Lots of the time I get told that my stuff is way too long, especially from people that haven't been on the channel before. I'm glad you enjoy the in depth format :)

Hey Tom, I'm a couple days late, but finally watched through the video! Glad to see you've got your backup solution in place for all your machines. If there is one thing I need to do for my setup, its have properly configured file backups of all my devices. I'd drop the cash for it all, but all the drives and such are expensive! Once I get a break in my classes and a good long weekend where I can drop a bit for drives, I'll put it all together and make one large file backup system for everything. I cannot wait for your next networking video! Question: What kind of speeds do you get for file backup using the ethernet to usb adapter? USB is probably a bottleneck in your case so you may want to get a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter to increase your speeds for MacBook Pro backups. Can't wait for more videos Tom!

Great video as always tom. I'm surprised you shut the Hackintosh down rather than putting it to sleep. Personally I put my Mac to sleep during the day as it's a good compromise between power saving and component stress. As for what's next, personally I'd work on getting the data as organised as possible. I.E sorting through the archives to track exactly what they contain and cleaning up duplicated files between drives to reduce the amount of duplicated data that needs to be stored. Then I'd look at investing in a couple of big drives. I've recently been forced to sort my own data (all 14.6TB of it) due to some drive failures and getting things more organised certainly made shifting it around easier, and meant that when I bought new drives to replace the ageing WD drives that I was using I was able to save a decent amount of money because I needed one less drive than I thought and I still have plenty of room to spare. It gives you a great sense of achievement when it's all organised too, or at least it did me :)

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed. I would if I could, sleep is one of just a few things that don't work properly on my Hackintosh. I didn't mind before I moved because I always kept my systems powered up throughout the day, but now that I shut down, sleep would be very handy. You're absolutely right, organisation is key for the next step. When I build my NAS, I want to be ready with clean and tidy folders rather than transferring duplicated and scattered data all over the place. I think I may need to buy a second hard drive dock, looking at 2 drives at the same time will make life a lot easier.

If you're only using the 750GB HDD for TM backups of your Hackintosh, does it not make more sense to directly connect it rather than relying on the network?

Hi Tom, nice video once again! I recently started making some videos of my own about my FreeNAS project, the presentation is still a bit stiff, I know, but hey, you have to start somewhere! Give it a try, maybe you like my choice of hardware as well, you're certainly the type of person that would appreciate the hardware I'm going with!

A HP Prolient DL580 GEN3 with 8TB of ECC system RAM makes a very fast rendering and transcoding system and can handle 18 drives in RAID 10 mode with an OS drive at the back of the unit is is like what MORTEN of my playhouse youtube channel uses.

Who makes that rack cabinet?
@ItsMyNaturalColour8 жыл бұрын
SJB Racks, total bargain. Just beware that these aren't actually 'server cabinets' - they're designed more for telecom equipment, switches etc, so they're not that deep.
@neccros0078 жыл бұрын
I dont need deep... I am putting a firewall and a cisco switch with 3 NAS boxes in my room here and wanted something quality but not a huge or open rack
@neccros0078 жыл бұрын
Damn!! Looks like ZPAS (SJP Racks) is UK based.. :( I am in the States and what stinks is this cabinet is EXACTLY what I been looking for as far as size, looks, quality, etc. It will be in a corner of my bedroom office with my laser printer on top... I looked on eBay and sellers won't ship to the US... :(

Don't use WD external drives. WD integrate the drives controller and USB controller into one un-removable PCB - It costs $1500~$3000+ to recover data off them because you can't just replace the drives sata to USB board.
@powerplayground8 жыл бұрын
You can remove the usb controller, trouble is is that the drive's partition isn't recognizable without the usb controller. >.< Not to mention the green drives in those suck hard for any sort of network storage application due to the fact they shut off after a few minutes of inactivity. I took a 4tb my book drive out of its enclosure and tried to use it on my freenas server, it started locking up the server, then clicking, then it was getting 3 MBPS read speeds when I went to pull the data of of it. :X Buy HGST 7200rpm drives, they are cheap, fast and super reliable!
