@slow_runnerКүн бұрын
With greenskins it also allowed you to grow your bits box with each new kit you bought. Nowadays nothing is cross compatible (easily anyway), so you're stuck with what's in the kit and there's not that much room for easy head, torso and arm swaps. And I won't even go into the new Boyz kit.

Disclaimer - I am talking about the old cultist models from the Dark Vengeance boxset, but they, at least, aren't overdetailed, they're under-defined. I've been struggling to work out if details are pouches or pockets, straps merge with clothing, boots merge with trousers, etc. So I have to spend time working out what things are, instead of just painting. Hopefully the newer models are more defined.
@TabletopTimeКүн бұрын
Absolutely a problem with the monopose pushfit starter box models some times. The Kriegers didnt seem to have that problem but ive seen it many times, Especially pouches blending into hips and belts etc.
@captainweekend5276Күн бұрын
I've found something that helps with this is after you've primed them, give them an all over drybrush of a lighter colour, even if you don't use it as a zenithal or for slap chop, it helps define the shapes and edges and makes what you're painting a lot clearer. Likewise an all over wash can work if you've primed a light colour.
@arandomlostsoul753Күн бұрын
You know you're painting old models when you can't tell WTF something is supposed to be!
@toblexson5020Күн бұрын
@arandomlostsoul753It isn't quite that bad, it's just that the details aren't super crisp because they're basically a single moulded piece. The chosen have a more modern, is this armour or demonic skin problem. But I'm someone who started with the old fantasy figures, so I'm sorta used to those, and took a massive break, so my hands aren't that steady either. With the newer models being less multipart than the models that started the pretty detailed look (the old death company being a great example), I'm always worried that they'll skimp out on detail for fewer parts, but looking at the death korp of krieg, I realise that it's actually closer to the opposite problem, with too many parts and lots of detail, making kit bashing more awkward.
@timidwolfКүн бұрын
As a long time Space Wolf player, the amount of detail GW added became a problem very quickly. They always felt like the kind of army that would receive very standard practical versions of their equipment, that they would decorate themselves, now they all have one of very few flashy designs which ironically makes them feel too uniform. I limited myself to one of each SW sprue variant just to make them look unique within the army.
@arandomlostsoul753Күн бұрын
If and when a Space Wolfs overhaul comes out, I hope they do them justice with a lot more variety. The old Short Marines versions of Space Wolfs offer a lot of choice and variety that we just don't have with the Primaris ones.

I love that you guys talked about the points cost in this video, and how discouraging it can be to finish a really cool unit and then deal with the fact it is such a small part of the army. I think this issue becomes even worse when you look at the fact that your normal cadian guardsmen, ork boys and the tyranid basic infantry have all more or less doubled in price from 5th to 10th edition, and in between the edition change on average you need more models meaning that you are spending EVEN more money

So around 2:30 I have to admit that this isn't exactly true, I've built 6 of these infantry kits, and the arms and equipment are easily interchangeable between the bodies, all you need to do is have the pair of arms, and it would work well. Building models really puts a damper on the hobby for me these days. Modern models have so many parts and so much detail that cleaning mould lines is sooo time consuming and I end up with crampy hands by the end of it. So many models I get half way through building the squad without a lick of paint before it ends up thrown on my pile of shame. One of my favourite models was the Battle for Skull Pass Night Goblins as they're 1 piece, easy to clean up, and I painted most of them on the sprue and the came out great. One aspect I've liked about 3D printing models is, yeah, they're a bit of a pain to set up, but once they're printed they're basically ready to paint.

Reminds me a bit of the 12-hour challenges the GW I used to leave near to ran, that was buying a model in the morning then building and painting it to completion before the store closed 12 hours later. I've done many things from a squad to a single Leman Russ, to a squad and heavy weapons teams, to an entire Baneblade. Some others liked to do a single character model, but I've also seen an entire start collecting box (with a little bit of help) and a full Imperial Knight. These days I'm painting more for the end result though, haven't been in a GW store for a while. Not that I need to, still got enough unpainted minis lying around where I occasionally paint one of.

As someone with a lot of experience with the new kriegers, I find it weird that you don't think the arms are particularly interchangeable, maybe it was because you were having to rush through building them but I found plenty of the arms fit easily between the different poses, especially the single arm options. I even used some of the new arms on the old resin models which make for some kind of jacked looking kriegers but nothing too jarring. I generally like that models are more detailed, I enjoy the more detailed sculpts precisely because it gives me more to paint. Also although it may sound odd, I don't really consider guard to strictly be a horde army, they can be if you choose to field them that way, but armoured vehicles have always been the backbone of the army, and can very quickly add up points that make up for the low points cost infantry. On the point of whether armies are bigger or not, they are compared to older editions, but if you compare to more recent editions like 7th and 8th (which is relatively speaking since that's more recent as in a decade ago) armies are drastically smaller now. I consider my orks to be hordey as when I play a 2k game I'm taking around 150-200 models, however in 8th edition you could easily take 90 gretchin and 100 ork boyz and have that be only half your army. Even a bit before I started playing there were formations which allowed space marine armies to take around 10 free rhinos, razorbacks, or drop pods. Army sizes have always fluctuated between editions according to player desires, the thing you'll find looking back at older editions that you don't get from reading the rulebooks is that people actually wanted to run larger games, which is how side games like apocalypse started, and why after a certain point army sizes began to grow. I remember the transition of 8th to 9th, a 2000 point list in 9th was about 75% the size that it was in 8th, there wasn't an appreciable change in 10th as some armies got much cheaper whilst others saw their points costs rise as previously optional wargear was integrated into their base profile.

For all the knocks against just swiveling the joints, I will say it added enough "noise" to an army where nothing exactly looked the same and all felt like varying stages of movement. @11:35 as a T'au and LoV player YES the details are all cool when looking at the finished product but the painting is just too much at times...new farsight for example with his maglock arms that have parts visible that you can only paint IF yo do sub assembly....LoV troops have a million little bits on them and dont get me started on the bikes. (again love both my armys but yes new kits from GW get more and more crazy on the details)
@RunningMoldКүн бұрын
Absolutely agree on the complexity/difficulty of newer kits. Most of the time i'm painting something, when i think that i'm basically done, i realize that i missed some tiny detail, and then the internal debate starts: Should i paint this at all, should i hide it with some simple black, if i do really paint it how much effort am i going to put into it, etc. For me it also leads to more time spent cleaning up mistakes, because while the minis have gotten larger, the details they cram on have gotten much smaller i feel, so i accidentally hit other parts a lot more than i used to. Like you mentioned, it's not just the painting, it's also the building. Maybe i'm just really slow, but assembling my plastic Leviathan Dreadnought took me roughly 8 hours. Many parts means many moldlines and many connection tabs.
@captainweekend5276Күн бұрын
Definitely use the eraser brush technique if you aren't already, it was an absolute gamechanger for me. A quick swipe of a damp brush can save hours of having to go back and clean up, and makes the painting process a lot more enjoyable.

The detail creep is real, definitely. I've spent about 10h last week to finish 20 models, it was fine since it was about 2-3h per evening and in parts kinda relaxing, but I don't think I'm gonna repeat this anytime soon

1:40 thats because the infantry box is just the dkok kill team. The old infantry box wasn't as complicated and more like other infantry boxes

Awesome sauce. Now paint 50 more in 2 hours.

Wait, the Krieg Infantry are only supposed to go together according to the instructions? I’ve knocked out 70 of them so far. The arms and some of the heads ‘n bits can be swapped around effectively without too much modification. When you run into the part A73 problem, there are more than a few right arms holding things that can have the hand clipped to fit the Melta or the Plasma. Any pose can really be used to make any of the infantry types.

Of course; absolutely with clippers, glue and putty you can make a lot of customisation, but when compared to the straight flat connections and out of the box modularity of older kits, it's a lot more work

@ I definitely feel like the Krieg Infantry lend themselves to an easier ability of swapping between the weapons than other units. However, I get what you are saying, considering that there are only seven different primary weapons not including the three options for the Watchmaster. I think using the official building instructions there are 36 different pose options, including six different combinations for the Watchmaster. The regular Lasgun troopers become repetitive after the third box for sure though.

I leave all accessories off my models now. More fun to paint and they don’t look so busy

I painted 100 termagants/hormagaunts (total, not each) in batch And thoroughly enjoyed it
