love this idea of making a quick deploy mat out of paracord as it could be used to as a bum mat or kneeling pad while making fire. Saw other videos making the same "knots" without a crochet needle but it was clumsy & messy AF! so i want out and bought a crochet needle and tried it. I gotta say, after 10 min of trying to crochet this paracord mat, I have a new found respect for all grannies who crochet!

This is a fantastic idea! I have been trying to figure out a good way to store my paracord without just making a fat king solomon (times however many back and forth). The problem with that is that I can't pull out just what I need for a single strand; undoing it causes two strands to come out. I'm headed to my local craft store to get a crochet hook tomorrow!

May I suggest mounting a cameras directly over the crocheting to make it easier to learn. I find this like trying to watch someone else tie a necktie while I watch. I appreciate you taking the time to make something a little easier in the field for those of us in the service.

Brilliant! I think it's a great idea. I keep mine in precut lengths in my BOB, but for caching or extra cord I think it's really cool.

My students seem to find a way to make a mess of the paracord but I can see how using this next method with netting will be a great way to store and use the cord. I appreciate you sharing your method it is an easier wrap than the one I was showing them how to do. Anything easier is usually always better. Thanks

storing rope or paracord,no matter what state it's in either loose or worked up as you did here is fine.The key to not having rope or cord ruined is to keep it away from any kind of oils,gas,any chemical that can cause it to break down.Recommending people to just toss their cord into the trunk of a car could easily cause the cord to degrade and break when you need it the most...being someone that worked off of ropes for years(my life depended on the integrity of those ropes) I never tossed them anywhere.They were kept clean and away from anything and everything.

Very interesting to a guy who's thinking of making a wide strap for a pack. I could do this 2 or 3 inches wide for about 3 or 4 feet, and then put a carbiner though each end to secure it to the pack, right? My wife has tons of crochet hooks. I'm sure she'd lend me one.

I keep my extra 550 cord in clean plastic pop bottles, just feed it in & use the cap to keep the running end from going into the bottle. It feeds the cord like a rope bag. I'm going to have to try the nest. My friend is crocheting me a "tactical paracord hat". She says it should be done soon. I don't know what to expect, I'm scared that she might want me to wear it...lol

this was awesome! I just stored it in a ziplock bag, and tossed it in my ruck, works awesome, a tip for making this a little bit faster, is using a mag light(the bigger ones) same method, works great cheers

I've actually done this and I store it in my pack where the inner supports go or where the hydration goes and it pretty much takes up no room and doesn't interfere with hydration or support. Then I just forget about it and if I ever need it I know it's there. However, What about making a full on Anorak or something?

Hello, I decided to post here even though the vid is old and perhaps no one will see the post, but a few years ago I looked into alternative methods to store cordage - twine - parachord etc …but shorter lengths as ~ 5 - 10 - 15 -20 - 30 feet . We all know we somehow end up with a collection of short lengths over time of misc types of cordage … how to store them in an organized storage format. How about creating a VEST made up of a tapestry of squares of different types of collected small lengths of various cordage ! ? Each square doesn’t have to be exactly the same size, small ones, larger ones but each is tied edge to edge with its neighbor or even some overlapping a bit to form a general tapestry and eventually becoming a wearable vest. Large storage pockets can also be added to the vest being themselves created from squares of cordage….. the vest could also be used to aid in camouflage by allowing foliage to be easily stuck into the fabric of the vest. When I was a young man I loved the out doors and most often ran around the woods in the more warmer periods with a simple duck hunters vest, GREAT large storage around the back and 2 large pockets on the front, it was light, allowed some warmth and had great storage for all kinds of stuff. The tapestry cordage vest is basically an extension of the duck hunters vest. In closing a person whom has this vest needs a small length of cordage, he / she can easily look over the vest he / she is wearing a quickly decide which square has the appropriate size and remove it … at a later time when it is convenient he / she can create or find cordage and re-create ( knit ) the square and replace it. Needless to say a vest made of squares of parachord would be a rather warm article of clothing, great for winter. Might I add, if someone were to make and sale these, I think it would be a popular item if the cost is reasonable. GREAT VIDEO

great idea could be used as a mat to sit on. it is a lot more useful than a hank of cord just sitting in the pack. yet another use for pc. you carry it anyway might as well be in a form that can be used for something. subsrcibed.

GoGetYourOwnGear you can get the 500' roll of Paracord and make a pretty nice belt using this trick. It's also how I store extension cords and air hose at work, just a single chain. Makes it so things aren't a tangled mess.

Storing paracord can be done at ones leisure. Untangling is usually done when you really need it.

Damn it hit wrong button. Anyway I love the way. I can put on the base of my backpack or in with the water bladder. As in my Rush72 backpack. I have not seen any other person come up with that. Very easy to pull out. Thanks for sharing. I store my like electric cord ut not wrapping around my arms. It's a bit smaller. I have to try it your way

I remember watching this video a couple years ago, having issue in one regard. I just rewatched and thought I'd post up my question this time. Each time you wrap the cord around the hook, it appears you are twisting the cord the same direction? If, for example, each hitch uses up 1" of cord (100' / 1" = 1200), then after completing a 100' mat the cord would effectively have been twisted 1,200 times. I understand that once you pull/release the cord, that it will untwist but leaving cord in a twisted state I have found it takes an unfavorable "set". It does appear that after you pull/release the briad that the cord is quite kinky. Personally I like to keep my cord (be it electrical cords, anchor lines, paracord) twist free when coiling (using a coiling method similar to what a film or music crew uses to coil cables, or how commercial fishermen coil their lines) by alternating the overlap direction each coil (overhand/underhand or clockwise/counterclockwise). I am wondering if when you are wrapping your hook, that maybe you could alternate the direction you wrap the crochet hook effectively negating the continuous twisting of the cord - or would this create other problems)? Do you know some method of crochet with knots, which will block loops from running out, in case the knitwork will be perforated with some knife or sharpened tool? I need to knit some light lamellar armor imitation (theatrical costume), and I want to be a bit closer to hypothetically real armor knitting (and also use this knitting method later for tool holders, and bags).

Wow...... I'm an infantry soldier and if I don't have a spool of 550 cord I take however much cord I have and feed it into a ziplock bag and keep the end out so whenever I need it I just pull out the length required and it NEVER tangles. The bracelets are a worn accessory that got popular, got it, but this is just absurd....

You started making the chain using a knitting style stitch not a crochet style stitch. The crochet stitch is more efficient. Use the hook to catch the cord rather than wrapping.

Hm, interessting. Use as little as possible as often as possible. Can use it to pad up or cushion important thinks, under your Jacket as protection against cold on your kidney as example. A "seat cushion" (right word?) and rolled as survival Pillow. At least you have something to do in survival situations ;-)
