Amazing Michael! If you hadn't figured it out by now, those purple Panasonic caps of that age always leak or "pee" down one leg. If that set is a keeper, and it looks like it will be, you'll need to change all of the purple caps. I really can't believe you found a new flyback for it!! I was convinced that would be the end for the TV.

Use to see a lot of the red or purple leaking caps in Toshiba sets for some reason, there are quite a few on the decoder board so changing them next, the transformer was a very lucky find on the internet , sometimes I cant believe my luck !

Memories :) I remember going to the Holiday Inn in Leicester, to have training on this chassis. It was unusual for us to get training for any manufacturer, but as we had had the CVC20s in, and they had popped I was sent along. It turned out that we weren't the only ones having trouble. They were so different from previous hybrid valve sets. There was a couple of chaps there that I went to college with, in attendance too. The training was really quite good and, surprise, they even admitted to the ''teething problems''. They became a decent set, but they kept changing the chassis without us knowing. You would open a box to get it prepped for delivery and it was a different chassis on the inside. ITT also sold a 26inch around that time, I think it was the FT110. A solid state 110 degree tube and had round light up touch pads at the top for channel changing. We only sold one. It was expensive! It had an intermittent fault that kept failing every 6 weeks or so. The customer complained directly to ITT, and because we never even saw the fault, it was duly boxed up and sent back to ITT. It came back about 3 months later, after numerous calls, with a new tripler. Happy customer but peed about the time taken. Thanks for the reminisces.

I feel your exasperation @58:04. As a former field service engineer (80's and 90's) repairing dumb VT type terminals (Cifer brand) on site where you tried to do component level repairs wherever possible, I have been in that position so many times. The joy of finding a component to be faulty (only had a Fluke multimeter to work with back then) but the despair of it's replacement not fixing the issue is one I have experienced many, many times. We did carry a stock of spare boards including power supply and video boards to complete the repair quickly but then had to fix our own boards back in our workshop in Northwich. I had a boot full of service manuals, spare boards, components and an RS Tool Case. We did get scopes at one point which made fault finding a little easier. All repairs done in client offices often with lots of folks around...very different times.

I remember my parents renting TVs like this with a coin metre on the side. They were always going on the blink. We didn't buy our own TV until at least the mid 2000's because they wouldn't last more than two years or so before it needed replacing again. We must have gone through every make and model through the 80's. One year it would be Philips, the next would be an ITT or something else!

Another enjoyable watch Michael. Many thanks for posting. I'm amazed how the focussing was still looking good after all the time that the set had been sleeping and the LOPT and tripler was changed - quite amazing! What a nice-looking set too. We had an ITT Feathertouch 110 (with the weird channel change control panel - don't try to use it if your finger is damp!). I wish I still had it - what a fantastic thing it was. It was regrettably discarded after a colour fault made everything purple and the local repair shop said it was beyond repair! It ran for years and years prior to that - just the odd burn-up of a convergence pot. Fingers crossed that you will be able to locate and fix that left side fault on your CVC20. I'll keep 'tuning in' in case of an update. What a set eh!! Kind regards.

i was given a 'dud' similar one, 26 inch, with CVC30 chassis in the early 90s, eventually got it working and used it as our main 'front room' tv for several years, with the back missing 😲, as the original owner, a garage owner and ex tv/radio engineer, had lost it! mine had the leds fitted....he gave me many old radios and tvs over the years. i scrapped another 2 with dud tubes and kept a few parts, i have 2 of those sound modules plus focus pot and a 'possibly' good lopt, plus another one that looks like its been rewound at some point. i used to have the IF/signals unit but eventually stripped it for parts, mostly the chips.. i think i have a set of philips kt3/k30 boards 'somewhere' 😁 the CVC30 had a couple of safety issues, one being a plug n socket burnup on the convergence board fitted above the scan coils, and dry joints on the mains on off switch, official service mod instructions were to wire the bad areas directly

Hi as far as I can remember the thorn 9000 chassis used the ITT tripler which was always failing and due to the high demand in ordering spares to fix sets and replenish stock always left field engineers quaking in there boots as we were only allowed to carry a maximum of 2 and replaced on a one to one basis, those were the good old days

Fantastic video and actually very useful to me, one day I'd like to resurrect my neighbours old itt colour tv. Very similar to this but with 4 channel buttons above the speaker. It had a strange fault where sometimes when you changed channels the colours were inverted. I wasn't clever enough to fix it 30 years ago but could probably have done it now. Unfortunately it has no doubt developed other faults with standing. Was thinking about bringing it up for you to look at but not sure if it's worth doing anything with...? Edit: thinking back there was a service switch that made the inverted colours show up, otherwise the picture was just B/W and you had to change channels until a colour picture appeared.

If the "ripples" are on the left side of the screen and run vertically from top to bottom consisting of an increasingly fading set of ripples to the right, you need to start with failure of passive damping components in the line output stage.

It had the same 6 channel buttons but they was labelled something like BBC1, 2, ITV1, 2 and ALT1, 2. Only the colour control was rotary, the volume, brightness and contrast controls were left to right sliders. On further investigation it appears this might have been an ITT CVC19.

That is certainly an earlier version. The tripler was screwed directly to the metal panel. This caused ‘punch through’ of the tripler case from the high internal voltage. Later versions had a countermeasure consisting of longer screws and a plastic washer about 5mm thick on each, between the tripler and the metal panel to improve insulation.

that bad switch may not be leaking due to carbon but by liquid corrosive muck that leaches out of the plastic its made of, i've seen it in those and those black plastic enclosed preset resistors, usually Piher branded, you often find white 'fur' covering them and sometimes green corrosion on the terminals , that possible replacement you found looks same as used in a sanyo portable i had,

Thank you, I enjoy watching your videos. I'm in North America and worked on TV and electronics since I was a kid like you, I find it interesting the difference in terminology, we don't say dry joint, we say cold solder joint, we say things like high voltage, B plus, horizontal and vertical deflection. We never had sets with exposed fronts of CRTs either, they always had a trim ring around the CRT, in the years before bonded safety glass we had another glass in front of the CRT, what did the front of your TVs look like in the days before safety glass ?

bonded safety glass was not really a thing in the uk in the colour era, we had single panel toughened faceplates with a safety rimband by the time colour came to the UK. There were a few tvs with decorative plastic surrounds like the US but push-through was standard. Many B&W tvs before the 1960s had safety glass or acrylic or sometimes a rubber cover directly applied. Dont forget that the uk only got colour in 1967 so technology was already advanced compared to the color introduction in the US which already had 10 years.

I never liked CRT. High frequency, high powered high voltage always been scary to me.

Sometimes a fear is very valid. CRTs are incredibly dangerous if you don't know what you're doing (and often even if you do). 15000+ volts and an often live frame are not something to experiment with, which is why these videos are so interesting. I know enough to know that I don't know enough to touch stuff like this, so seeing it done by someone who does is fascinating.

Well as Australia never even managed to have a home grown TV industry and imported everything I guess you would know😂

@@jonathaneastwood2927what? Of course we had a TV industry and most TV’s were locally made because of tariffs on imports.

@@HughTVDX Do you want me to mention the unlimited pommie crap problems before they went to Mitsubishi G chassis in 83 here & they had there own problems because I can give you ALL of it starting with the 3504 toaster that you could cook eggs on in OZ , then the epic failure 4KA chassis this is when to Mitsubishi G chassis & it wasn't till the K chassis they became semi reliable, the Q chassis was good with a couple miner common problems....Been a tech 40+yrs in OZ.
