Jamie is knackered. The builder sits slumped on his sofa, in his one bedroom flat in Bridgend, having finished a hard day on the tools.
It's 7pm. The 35-year-old looks mentally as well physically exhausted, but his working day is not yet done.
Having just spent nine hours driving forklift trucks and wagons, Jamie will soon leave for his second shift as a cleaner at a local office block.
"Bills, food, petrol, clothes, school trips, school uniform - everything has just skyrocketed," the father-of-one tells me.
"It just led me to have to permanently have a second job just so the money that I make will cover the bills, and then I've got a bit of cash.
"It's just, you can work all the hours you want, but it's just not enough. So the second income was sort of a needs must."

Sadly it was what was called for by certain groups. Once the workforce was doubled the cost of housing was only ever going to increase. The woman wanting to stay home and look after her children has great instincts. It doesn’t make sense to out source raising your children. I know for some it isn’t possible but child care costs vs wages are numbers that need to be crunched. She could possibly bring in some money from home that flexible around children with so a fair amount of remote work these days.

I just saw a viral video of a lady caught on surveillance in a thrift store finding a bag of money and she kept it instead of turning it in and they tried to villainize that woman. In THIS economy. People were brutal, saying how they hate thieves and she should've turned it in and been honest. In an economy that is currently pushing people to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do. Smh. In my opinion, more shame is due to them than her. Whoever left that bag of money sitting there either was trying to set someone up for embarrassment or they didn't need the money as bad as the person who found it.

When we got married in 1979 both of us were working in basic type jobs (hospital cook and office admin). We had a car, rented a flat, went on holidays, had a social life and were able to save for a deposit for a mortgage (2.5 x main earners wage) to buy an affordable terrace house with a garden in a nice area. This was the norm then. When we had a child we were able to live on one wage until they started school, albeit with my husband doing occasional overtime when we needed extra funds. We didn’t need or receive any state help apart from child benefit. Fast forward to today and this is not the case anymore. What have we collectively allowed to happen over time to our country and people?

When I'm on a day shift I'm up out of bed at 3.30am. At 5am I drive the five miles to work. Start actually working at 6am. Finish at 6pm. Drive home. Have a bath because of the nature of the job. So by the time I sit down to my tea (the meal) it's usually 7.30pm. Then by 10pm it's back to bed to get just over five hours sleep so I can get up the next day to repeat the process. I work a rota system that is a mix of days and nights which runs 24/7 365 days oer year so often I have to work this kind of routine even on Christmas day, New year's day and bank holidays. All for £30k per year. Which is a high wage in the northern town where I live. I don't think many people realise the massive regional inequalities that exist in the UK.

We're in a bind, as most of the jobs and services (especially access to a regular doctor) are in our few big cities, so for those who need routine/regular medical care it would be a pretty big risk to move to a lower-cost part of the country. Even then - the cost of food here has become obscene, as our grocery industry is an ologopoly of a few big chains.

When life is work, but work is not enough to live, then people refuse to work. That’s the biggest cause of unemployment. You can’t blame them. They are not ‘lazy’. The whole thing is systemically flawed. As soon as it said he ‘rents’ a 1 bedroomed flat, I knew he was in high water. The government needs to cap these high rent rates. If he was paying less rent, he could just work one job and have precious family time. You should work to live, not live to work.

All those food men working 2-3 jobs, barely able to survive and having no perspective of future because those jobs help to survive so no saving, no perspective of property unless mommy and daddy are helping. He is doing what he has to do, like others but this is exactly what those who aren't working as hard as him want him to do... not complaining, then they can carry on living better and better. If you think it will get better you are deeply mistaken! We are not in a crisis like ant other before. For the first time, this is a production crisis. We reach the limit! But our bosses (I'm not talking about our local garage boss, but the huge billionaires) keep maintaining their lifestyle. After each crisis those last two decades, things were supposed to be better. 2008, banks would be reformed and things would get better. Banks never more freedom than today! After covid, we were supposed to have a better quality of life as we realised that a worker with a food family life balance is more productive. Things are getting worse. His kids are going to live in hell!
