I've never understood this. I know you're just repeating what someone equally as uninformed told you in a pub, so there's no point in asking you to explain how the hell you came to that conclusion, but come on! Have you ever actually looked at the data? Have you ever looked at a single policy? Do you really think a Labour government would have proposed the Rwanda bullshit? Or specifically targeted disabled people in the recent PIP reform proposals? Those are policies specifically created to appeal to far right voters who think all the people receiving disability payments are spongers and that asylum seekers are foreigners that should be deported. A Labour government wouldn't attempt to implement those, because it would alienate left wing voters. The way people vote dictates who is in power and how they use that power to keep themselves in office. If one party wouldn't create policies (that AFFECT REAL PEOPLE'S LIVES) while the other would, then they are catagorically NOT the same, and it makes a difference whi gets elected. Everyone hates politicians (that isn't some niche opinion) but who is elected does have real world consequences.

We need compulsory voting, but add a "none of the above" box, to put a "X" next to and have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice PR system, which means you would need more than 50% to win. Being Canadian I'm not sure how much local elections in the UK matter in the greater scheme of things. I know that here they don't really matter at all BUT local councillors are not (with a few exceptions) overtly attached to national or provincial political Parties in this country. Is it different in the UK?
@hypsyzygy506
@hypsyzygy506 18 күн бұрын
Most councillors are attached to the national parties, but there are also a lot of local-issue independents. Even the main party candidates have to deal with local issues. However, there is also the opportunity to give the national governing party a bloody nose. Minor parties and independents tend to do well in local elections, but First Past The Post means the big two parties dominate in the General Election, and have done since before WW1.

I work for the local authority and have some connection to the labour party as my father is a prominent member due to his work within the citys public services - We know most of the councillors & from my experience & speaking to them, they essentially control city spending and contract services while running their own variety of departments & services which are often stretched - hence why they control funding as they work to a budget and outside of tax payers money, events, subsidised housing & fines they have very little income Vs their expenditure - the mayor can appoint commissioners who choose from a variety of providers to run the services they dont have the capacity to run so they have quite a bit of influence over how the wards can be run; there's years long contracts and extensions & then they put them all back up for grabs and everyone has to bid for them again & they make the final decision on if it will continue or not - provided they have the budget allocated then they have to manage it & make sure they dont have a deficit because councils can become bankrupt - they run welfare services - adults and health - approve planning permission, run parks and are supposed to maintain the roads and infrastructure; some is owned by private corporations but subsidised by the local authority - they handle anti social behaviour and citizens advice - legal services & the courts - plan cultural events facilitate elections hold public meetings and consultations, do city planning - public health roll outs are done through the council in conjunction with health services - Realistically the local elections matter alot; it doesn't matter as much as the general election as that establishes the cabinet of the prime minister & make up of the ruling party or coalition & they're the ones who decide the budget for the councils, policy and all the stuff you think of when you think big government - whereas councils can be a Mish mash of every partys political candidates & as the other person said a few independent candidates often prominent figures within the community & while they make alot of difference to how those budgets are managed if the government isn't funding them enough in certain areas they can't do much outside of appealing to power & while certain areas will have more influence usually due to economic weight or population density ~ like London, that's complex too as everywhere is broken into Burroughs or wards who all work differently - Anyway the tldr is yes, no, to some extent, but not really

I predict the next U.K. Election will be a "Conservative Majority Government - Sunak will remain Prime Minister - 1 seat majority" I correctly predicted every UK Election (within 1-2 seats) since 1987. In 1992, I predicted a "Conservative Majority - reduced to only 20 seats - John Major will be Prime Minister." Everyone else, including the BBC, initially predicted a "Hung Parliament; race too close to call."

Do people really care about the election of a mayor, with turnouts across the country at 32-42 %, .in London 58% did not bother voting have politicians turned people away as no politician from any party in the country can be trusted. Yes labour will win the next election unless they do something silly (and have a Brown moment make sure your microphone is turned off) we have short memories in the UK, 13 years of labour and now 14 years of the conservatives with the Lib Dem’s also helping. 27 years of parties who change there minds and manifestos that are worthless. I won’t be voting at the next general election as no party deserves my vote.

Unfortunately, on this occasion, The Electorate will not be proceeding with Conservative policies in this constituency. We appreciate the time you have invested in shaping your party and understand that this must be disappointing news. The Electorate encourages Conservatives to stand for reelection for any future elections for which they may consider. Thank you Prime Minister again for your resignation and best wishes with your career away from frontline politics. Kind Regards, The Electorate
