As a Gooner, a game that I will never forget. The whole street rocked that night. But I have another reason, mum had been unwell for a couple of weeks and was still upstairs in bed. I took a cup of tea and toast up at half-time and watched the second half with mum. What a second half, and at the end, we were screaming and had a big old hug. Mum passed away a few weeks later. im a leeds fan for my sins but im a football fan as well, i remember being glued to the telly watching this rooting for arsenal to win it against a liverpool team that had dominated for so long, to go to anfield and get that result was outstanding, george graham produced a team with character organisation and skill, the defence went on to not just be successfull under graham but laid the base for vengas early success at arsenal, venga never seemed to appreciate the importance of a great defence as the base for success the way graham did.

@robinmcewen3286
@robinmcewen3286 4 жыл бұрын
Because he had Butcher, Lineker, Robson and so on who were infinitely better players. Adams missed out on Italia 90 through injury I think. But the others were nowhere near the England quad then. It's funny how fans demand big-club players when they don't get picked. then demand form players from smaller clubs when big-club players get the nod. arsenal were a top team then. But apart from Adams, I don't think there was a case for another player to be included in the England squad. rocastle was brilliant, but perhaps he was already suffering from the condition that would take his life too soon. George Graham was Arsene Wenger x 10. Disgrace how they treated him

The most striking thing about this was the behaviour of George Graham. Pure class. He tried to keep the euphoria to a minimum - clearly conscious of the circumstances. Also, respect for his fellow Scot. Class act. Sure, fell foul of the money trap. but so what? Who didn't back then? Treated disgracefully and discarded like a rag doll. Graham was twice the manager Wenger was. Liverpool fans were pure class too. Not a boo to be heard. Tbf, Arsenal aren't a big LFC rival and the flowers gesture at the start was possibly part of it. But LFC fans, in my experience, are the most knowledgable football fans I've ever met. they were magnanimous that night and they deserve enormous credit.

I'm a Liverpool fan, and I was evelen years old in 1989. And me, my older brother and my man utd fan uncle still remember this like it was yesterday. We were watching this together in my home in London. Arsenal had to win 2-0 at anfield to win the championship on goal difference...Nobody gave arsenal any hope. But i must confess that the FA cup final defeat against Wimbledon the season before was actually still in the back of my mind. Something had to happen in the second half. Smith then of course scored. And that's when me and older brother were beginning to s*** our selves if you like.. Coming into storage time.. me and my older brother thought we've got this.... Then...... 😭... Michael Thomas scored with virtually the last kick off the season... Me and my older brother were stunned. Fergie always said that he wanted to knock us off our perch. But i think that even though we were to win back the championship the following season. That was our last championship win. I actually do think that it was this tragic season and this game that knocked us off our perch. We have never really the same since. I must admit that I hated arsenal for a long time because of this.. 😂... But what i didnt remember was that they threw bunches of flowers into the kop as a mark of respect for the victims of the hillsborough disaster.. So kudos to the arsenal players and fans for that... Since the creation of the FA premier league. We haven't been good enough. Until now of course. This season will be ours, and the championship will come home...ynwa

Look at all the pass backs.. Its amazing they didn't change that rule sooner. I mean you could basically just keep passing it back to your keeper to pick up constantly and there wouldn't be anything wrong with it other than being throwned upon

Liverpool at this time were the masters! I've seen great finales in my time Manu and the treble Liverpool 2005 But to me this was the BEST Liverpool made the mistake of sitting back at 0-1 as they could still win the league. BUT..........

My late Grandad was a massive Arsenal supporter and use to force me to watch this on VHS every time I went round there as a kid! I have no affiliation with Arsenal at all (Watford fan), but this ending was incredible and eclipses the Aguero moment for me. Don't get me wrong, that was ridiculous, but I feel this moment was the best ever climax to a season. The daunting task of not only having to go to Anfield, but to win by TWO clear goals just couldn't be achieved....or so everyone thought! Amazing.

As an Arsenal fan, the words "It's up for grabs now" are etched in my mind. But what I came on here to say was, during this lockdown, I sincerely hope we are gonna see this through as unscathed as possible. Although we all love football, we are all in this together and I wish everyone the best.

I'm not an Arsenal fan, I really don't like them at all, but like most of the UK on that night, because of who you were playing, I watched the game with pals who supported Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, United, and Scum praying for an upset. Everyone of us was celebrating afterwards, as if it was our team that had won. It's without doubt the greatest finish to any top class English season. A. Because it was the closest of all time and involved the top 2. and B. Because the whole country celebrated as one, because in that era we were all sick to death of the boring pass back to the goalkeeper Liverpool tactics and the arrogance of Liverpool supporters! 🤣🤣

"...or Liverpool will be champions for the 19th time". I loved Brian Moore but he was wrong on that, to be pedantic it would have been our 18th as we'd only won 17 at the time and won our 18th the following season (89-90)

Michael Thomas!! It's not just the ice in his veins as he dinked that ball over Grobbelaar for the winner, it's the liquid nitrogen in his veins as he calmly rolled the ball back to Lukic a few seconds afterwards!

Nah, most times Barnes would of scored from that run... just a game too far for the team. The Thomas ball bounce of Nicol to put him clear through showed how tight that game was decided by... fair play to Arsenal.

@Alan West to be fair Liverpool back then were the masters of killing of a game via defenders passing it back to the keeper thats was one of the reasons for backpass rule changed it was making games boring. But a forward player from a big team killing time upfront was a rarerity.

As a Liverpool Fan King Kenny was totally responsible for the defeat as he had the team play a cagey defensive game. Had they gone into that game needing to win 2-0 they almost certainly would have done it.

Let me start by saying that Arsenal played the last game of the then 1st Division against a star studded team who undoubtedly were the best in the 80's, very very good Liverpool team that won't be easy forgotten for football supporters of that era.However in the midst of all the glamour is a team that stands out who have resilience, strength and togetherness to turn up on any given day and spoil the party, ARSENAL, 2-0 winners at Anfield, 1-0 Winners of the Premier League at Old Trafford and Become Champions, Become INVICIBILES against the odds.To end, just like it always said,the League Table does not like,so do the history books.
