Michael Thomas scores in injury-time to give Arsenal the 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield they required on the last day of the league season, to win the title in 1989.

I'm not an Arsenal fan but make no mistake, Man City winning on the final day may have seemed more dramatic due to Sky Sports, media, money and pundits, but on that day Utd were playing Sunderland and City playing QPR, not exactly top of the table stuff. This was incredible, the 2 top teams, Arsenal having a huge lead during the season and then having to do what was literally impossible at Anfield, don't let anyone tell you this this wasn't the biggest 2 minutes in the history of the league.

There was no back pass rule in '89. And Liverpool were time wasting right until Arsenal got the ball back. God, Liverpool fans just can't accept that they were on the receiving end of an incredibly epic sport's moment. I don't know why people don't like the commentary, either. "It's up for grabs now! @TitanFind9 жыл бұрын
IVIyWorld I dunno, they're pretty close. City hadn't won a title in 44 years, and were about to be edged by their hated rivals YET again. There was more on the line in 2012. But in this game it was the two actual contenders playing against each other in the final match. So swings and roundabouts.
@clivenewman37159 жыл бұрын
TitanFind You say there was more on the line in 2012 - I disagree. Arsenal hadn't won the title in 18 years and had been in charge of the first division for the first half of the season, Liverpool were flying and had given everything for their fans after the horror of Hillsborough. When Liverpool stuffed West Ham 5-1 to make Arsenal need the 2 goals, they hadn't been beaten by two clear goals all season. If Barnes had just run to the corner flag in the 91st minute the result was different. Listen to the comments from Pleat - he didn't even consider the 2nd goal a possibility at this point. Two titans battling head to head with the underdog coming through with seconds to go. The single greatest night of my life :)
@TitanFind9 жыл бұрын
Clive Newman Man City hadn't won the title in 44 years and had been in charge of the Premiership for most of the season before losing the lead but THEN hauling it back to be in pole position. It was City's title to lose on the final day, and the pressure was immense. Just look at the frustration on the faces of the fans as they're losing at the 90 minute mark. Man Utd are going to rub this in their faces - all they have to do is win a single home game against QPR, and they fuck it up! - and it will take them a generation to recover from the feeling of bereft humiliation. I am confident that the ecstasy of the City fans in 2012 eclipses even that of the Arsenal fans in 1989.

Royal Arsenal Yeah but it's static. The the late 80s and 90s, people used to go mental when a goal was scored and it was wild. Home and away, big game or small game. Today when a goal goes in, they get their ipads out! It's the stand up and clap brigade. In the Anfield 89 era the passion was raw. Football today is sanitised garbage.

It's like that in all sports now. I'm coming from Canada and, when I was a kid, NHL games were electric. Now it's just a big corporate wank. I don't go, let alone drop $100 for a shitty seat. I had free tickets last year and went and, though the game is arguably better than it used to be, half the "fans" are there for work fucking around on their phones. You just sit there praying an errant puck hits one. The MLS is actually becoming the best league to watch even though it's a minor league by soccer standards. But the fans are true blue , loud and a lot of fun. It seems to be where people who actually enjoy a game spend their bucks now. Even on TV you can hear it's far louder than the local NHL team.

Something that often goes unnoticed was George Graham not celebrating in front of the Liverpool bench out of respect for the occasion and a gallant Liverpool side who had gone through an incredibly traumatic year (Hillsbrough) trying (and failing) to get his coaching staff and bench to do the same.

This was the beginning of the end for Liverpool - we didn't know it at the time, but it was the turning point in our tragic history since then. Overtaken by Manchester - United and now City.

Arguably, it was the greatest and most dramatic top-flight Title win ever. Any Arsenal fan at the match that night must have been in seventh heaven as that second goal went in. Such a drama was positively Homeric. This game was certainly one of the most memorable and significant spectacles in football to be played out in modern times, possibly only equalled by Liverpool's similarly epic comeback in the Istanbul CL Cup Final some years later. It's because of games like this, that makes football what it is - the most compelling of sports, where one can go from complete despair to sheer jubilation and vice-versa in the space of 90 minutes.

Not one Liverpool fan left the stadium when we lifted the trophy! After Hillsborough and there pain to endure that was hard on them so I hope this Sunday they get to put it right. Massive RESPECT from an Arsenal fan.

To be fair City were down 2-1 into the 90th minute so it was a near impossible success... though QPR did make it somewhat easier as they knew they were safe and allowed City to constantly throw pressure into the box. '89 still better, 1st vs 2nd defined by essentially the last kick of the game... Liverpool was no QPR especially at Anfield in the 80s, no chance anyone saw Arsenal score so late, at Loftus Road there was always a sense that City would score again once it was 2-2.
@tomben618022 күн бұрын
@@sejason56Being objective, as a City fan, there are pros and cons to both. Yes City were only playing QPR, I disagree about what you said about them allowing it, there was a last ditch tackle to try and stop Aguero and I can’t remember who but a QPR player said most of them didn’t know they were safe, as the bench had only just started celebrating 20 seconds earlier, but as you say, it was 2 goals needed in injury time to win it. I also think the fact we were up against United for the league, the club who are our most hated rivals and had ridiculed us for decades, just made it more special. Arsenal playing the team who started the day in 1st and winning by 2 clear goals is a better achievement on the day, but I just think City’s meant more to City fans because of the context of going 44 years without a league and it being against United for the title. I am biased though.

Liverpool didn’t lose at home that hole season Liverpool were first and arsenal were second they had the same amount of points but arsenal has one less goal difference meaning they would have to score 2 goals up from Liverpool In the first half of the match nothing happened and everyone was shocked because (Liverpool one every home game that season) but in the second half arsenal successfully scored a goal everyone was screaming in which if the match ended like that Liverpool would of one because arsenal were away so they talking as thin as margins. Anyway the match went on there was 1 minute left the ball went to arsenals keeper he kicked it up the pitch to the left winger he passed to Michael Thomas he dribbled through three defensive players kicked it and it chipped over the keeper and went in the goal everyone was screaming they were all celebrating together and as an arsenal fan I still remember the adrenaline it gave me and I still sometimes get goosebumps but to this day Michael Thomas is still a legend and always will be

At the end of the day it was a shocking decision by Barnes. In what world would you try to take on the defender when all you need to do is to keep the score as it is? All Barnes needed to do was to take the ball the corner post and use up time. There was no need to get a goal.
@aussieboy772 жыл бұрын
That was the Liverpool philosophy back then - attack and score goals no matter what the score is. I respect Barnes for not taking it to the corner. Running down the clock by taking it to the corner is not football and should be banned.

Look at the CLASS of George Graham. Respectful for LFC, having in fresh memory what happened to their club and fans at Hilsborough, not only refused to celebrate at ther ground himself, but also calming down his staff members just to avoid anything bad that could happen to each sides fans.
