I feel like you are speaking directly to me in your videos. To think an accomplished violinist such as yourself takes the time to post videos to help others. I am in awe of you. I am a senior who has just retired and have taken up the violin. The violin is an instrument where you can create a ballet even if you can't dance. This is a lesson that everyone that plays a stringed instrument - and not just the violin - should learn. Vibrato is a wonderful form of expression. On a violin the vibrato may be a movement that it in line with the strings, on a classical guitar it is the same, on an electric guitar typically the strings are moved sideways but the idea is the same. It's a fantastic tool to add character to whatever you're playing. Play with passion and enjoy. Thank you Itzhak for the lesson!

This video was a surprise. I came here accidentally but I'm glad I did. I didn't use vibrato in my playing days but there wasn't much need for it playing dance music in small combos. I rarely took my bow to the type of gigs we played. But I love what the young bass players are doing on youtube.

Amazing! I had a teacher which I was frustrated with because she always had me vibrato like a madman on every note, super short super fast vibratos. My favorite piece of music in the world is the theme from Schindler's List, and all those beautiful vibrato styles give Itzhak's version so much more emotion and character than any version I've ever heard. So many of the "first chair" players in my university orchestra also had only a single vibrato style (the fast and narrow).

What everyone acknowledges here is true about the Big -Hearted Maestro. The only other comparable ( semi -comparable ) teaching is Isaac Stern in ' Mao to Mozart ' That's a video EVERY violinist should see. Oh, I do want to add to the advice given here ( CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS ?? ). Two tips from Mssr. Galamian on vibrato : 1. Put the scroll against a wall to practice vibrato. 2. Let the left arm hang from the fingerboard. T-T-That's ALL Folks !

It's a fabulous lesson on vibrato! And I'm a composer. What you have to say is useful to all musicians and music-lovers. Regarding the video, Maestro, may I suggest that you put the camera on an even plane with your face. Currently, the camera's upward angle creates the "Lilliputian" effect: where you look big staring down on us little people. A level camera would put us on the same plane and create more effective communication with your audience.

Wow at first I dissagred with his statement "vibrato being an underused tool", but when he started explaining what he ment by it I was amazed about how much he shared how it could vary so much.
