I think the biggest thing that limits Lia is definetly her lack of confidence. Ever since debut she very obviously lacked in confidence and was scared to sing live and her limited dancing abilities were also causing her to have trouble with stability, but she's definetly improving in Not Shy era and she's been gaining confidence :) She's pretty good right now and I can't even imagine what she is going to be like once she gains confidence and uses her abilities to the fullest.

I feel like ppls misunderstand this in kpop in general, Lia may not be an amazing vocalist, and that's okay, she is great at what she set out to do, and ITZY isn't a vocally intensive group anyways. It's all a matter of what the group sets out to do, sure they won't be able to have the harmonization and layering that groups like rv or mmm do, but give have them do itzy's choreo and anyone that isn't seulgi or irene will pass out mid performance. It's all a matter of what the groups' identity is, and thats ultimately what separates groups from each other, and creates distinct fanbases for disntict tastes

Lol, he just "SLAPPED" people out, having an ability to hit highnotes doesnt refer you as the better vocalist. It all depends on Technique, Singers like Lia are so underappreciated cause people nowadays use the hearing of highnotes as the proof that they are better or the best. Its just like Similar to Dancing, people tend to say that powerful dancers rather than groove dancers but like I said it all depends all in Technique. I think even tho you will re-rank this, Lia will still be the No.1, I heard that Lia got accepted in an SM Audition(idk if its true) but she didint attent...as we know SM is home of the powerful vocalists. I love your vocal reviews so much, they feel really fair and not driven by personal bias like others. Personally, I find when groups have two members with very close vocal abilities (like Lia and Yeji), it seems like automatically the "more visual" (😒) member gets the recognition for having better vocals. Similarly, Solar/Wheein (loved your Mamamoo vocal review) or Nayeon/Jihyo as examples. Jihyo and Lia get more hate and criticism on their vocals than their more center/visual counterparts, Nayeon and Yeji. But they're all good??? I know part of that perception also comes down to fitting a group's concept like a glove (Nayeon) and belting (Yeji/Solar) v. vocal tone and flavor (Lia/Wheein) It's sad to see members like Lia getting hate online when clearly she is Itzy's main vocal for a reason, and the best thing to do is root for everyone to improve and grow in their vocals and careers.

In fact in Twice, its Jeongyeon who is closer to Nayeon technically, both of them are basically at the same level, while Jihyo is still much higher than the 2. @@funkystyle7249 I agree that they are not at the exact same level. Lia is a stronger/more developed artist IMO, but Lia and Yeji are the two strongest singers in Itzy. I think comparing/contrasting the relationship between their vocal talents within the scope of Itzy is still fair. As for Jihyo/Nayeon, I agree that Jeongyeon is a better vocalist than Nayeon. That said, I've seen more comparison between Jihyo/Nayeon. This plays into what I was saying about how a "more visual" or center individual faces less criticism or critique for their vocals than their more vocally developed but "less visual" counterpart. Jeongyeon is a better singer, I agree, but she does not get near enough attention or commentary at all. She doesn't really work as an example, since I rarely, if ever, see her compared to Jihyo. Would you maybe do a little special video where you rank 4th gen groups overall vocals? Or with the most potential. The 4th generation gets many shit for their vocals, even though many of them are like 1 year into their career.
I really enjoyed this analysis for Itzy because considering they’re rookies and more dance heavy, I think we can all agree they are good vocalists and the future is going to be great for them. One of the key features of this video that I can appreciate is how he talked about Lia’s confidence issue and her bullying. Yes yes, this is a vocal ranking but everyone *confidence is key.* Confidence can have effect on anything and that especially includes singing. The people who say bad shit about Lia are the people who don’t realize that a lot of Itzy’s songs aren’t in keys that can showcase her best regardless of her singing well still. If she’s not confident with herself then how can she improve? And not only is it about her singing, it’s her dancing too she’s not confident about and she’s said it herself. It’s hard for her or anyone to ignore the criticism because she’s a Kpop idol and we all know how it is in the industry. This is only the beginning for her and her group. As time goes on, they’ll continue growing and learning and experimenting with what they can do. I’d rather have what Lia’s given us so far than nothing at all. She’s a great vocalist and can only get better. She’s amazing and can only become more amazing if we don’t ruin her mental health. So as he said in the video, everyone should just stop the hate over the littlest things, nobody is perfect

THANK YOU! Lia is by far my favorite main vocalist from the 4th generation just because of that one cover she did predebut, the amount of personality in her voice and her mezzo range is just soooo refreshing in this industry. Sadly as much as I love Itzy songs it's so frustrating to hear Lia parts cause it's obvious she's struggling and I don't get why their producers don't realise how much they're setting her up to criticism and, most importantly, wasting her potential.
@izonexbae4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Lia is a mezzo soprano, she’s 99% a soprano but she’s just not a good belter due to her chest register not being as full when she wants to mix and rather switches way too much in her head. I pretty much agree; *1.Lia* She’s without a doubt the best vocalist in the group with the most abilities, her support is solid and is the most consistent and proper. Her placement can sound very nice but when she goes higher she can get very whiny, her placement is def better than Yeji’s due to her being more forward in comparison to Yeji. Overall Lia is a decent main vocal but she’s just a bad belter and she tends to switch into her upper register or just go very heady which isn’t unhealthy but can’t sound as climatic and that’s why Yeji gets the most ad libs ect. *2.Yeji* Without a doubt thas the most ease in the upper 5th octave and does the best from all the members in itzy, her voice has this clear and vibrant sound to it when she goes higher and rather than just having a plain high note she knows how to add all the stylistic approaches. Overall she’s definitely deserving of being the first lead vocal, but Yeji has some issues with her sound becoming a bit too shouty and with her breath management not being as properly developed in comparison to Lia. 3.Chaeryeong The most consistent member while performing live and she is the more confident vocalist with Yeji, her voice sounds very nice in her mid range with some support being present and although not as developed as Yeji’s it’s still much present. Overall a great sub vocalist but likewise to Yeji she can get a bit shouty aswell and shows some issues with her tone production becoming very flat, her not having much freedom in her voice is slso restricting her sound from resonating in the audiences ears. She’s the only member who uses the half air half sound technique the most but that’s also due to her sound being like that even before debut. Yuna>Ryujin

Some people making down Lia but little did they know, Lia has a very good technique. It's not shown while performing because as you can see, Lia is more relax in singing if she's not moving. Lia has a very good tone, so soothing and relaxing. Lemme add this underrated idol, Chaeryeong. This girl is really all rounder. She can slay dance, she can sing without trouble, she can rap. I don't know why JYP always doing dirty to this all rounder girl. She doesn't deserve this type of treatment.

I really hope lia gets to see this video somehow. I think she really should and needs to hear this. She's a great vocalist and deserves so much praise!

Thank you for making this, Itzy are full of all- rounders. Like you said Ryujin has a lot of potential. I think with even more training on her vocals. She could be a Lead Vocalist in another group. Sam could I ask you, with every Comeback, could Yuna become a Lead/Main Vocalist, with more years to come with training and as she grows with her voice.

Main. Probably not. But with the key she can sing in, I don't see why she couldn't be a lead vocalist at some point.

Sam Bradley first, I am surprised you answered me back, thank you for reading my question, because Ive thought with every comeback her vocals are getting better each one, or being showed more that she can be one, I kind of knew she has the vocal ability, all of ITZY with more training, can be unstoppable

Great ranking! I wasn't the most excited about this ranking because I basically already knew what the ranking was, but now I'm really glad you made it. Everything you said on their voices was great, especially Lia. They really don't deserve all of the hate they get for their vocals. They're only 4 releases into their career and are a dance centered group, for this they do a great job. Lia has gotten an absurd amount of hate when she hasn't done anything wrong. Her vocal style doesn't naturally fit Itzy's high and more shouty type way of singing and she's doing a good job of adjusting to it. I hope she gets more lines like the ones from Not Shy in the future to better show of her vocals.

Great analysis and video! I've been learning a lot from your videos the past few months :) And I completely agree with your ranking! A lot of Itzy fans tend to rank Yeji first cause she is able to sing high notes and is stable & also Yuna last since they think whiny/squeeky voice = worst vocalist. But Lia deserves the first rank and Yuna is better than some may think. I'm very excited for their improvement and future overall, Itzy is my favorite rookie girl group with Everglow right now. Could you maybe do a ranking for Everglow as well in the future? Cause they haven't really shown their vocals and potential so far but I'm really curious about them.

this came out sooner than I expected! I think they’re pretty decent as rookies of this generation which is more focused on dance than vocals. Lia has a very beautiful singing style and it really adds flavor to the songs. I’d give her musicality a 10 imo. Her vocal timbre is another advantage she has. If she could make her placement a little more forward, then she’d definitely be one of the best vocalist in the 4th gen, but figuring out how to control your voice placement isn’t easy and would need a good vocal coach to guide you so it’s understandable

I agree that kpop songs, specially ITZY’s are extremely high which Lia isn’t use to (ie. her predebut stuff) which is why I really love the new album “Not Shy”. The keys for the songs are still pretty high but we DO get to hear more of her lower tone & it seems she’s way more confident now than when they debuted last year

Ok but the way he pronounced Ryujin 😭😂 all good tho it's a hard name to pronounce. But overall thank you so much for mentioning the whole deal with Lia, people don't seem to realize how much all their comments affected her confidence not only on vocals but in dancing too, she has so much potential and it saddens me to see her insecurities getting the best of her, and you're so right about kpop having such high pitched songs, like wannabes chorus it's so high all the time and it clearly doesn't fit lias range, which doesn't mean she can't sing, I'm so glad Not shy is a much more comfortable song for them and it's great to see Lia with much more confidence this era, she'll just get better and better
