Jisoo is a chest puller and has a throaty placement as of the moment. She just needs to mix and support better, have better placement, have a more forward sound. I think that's the vibe yg wants to go for tho, in comparison to other groups like red velvet. Keep in mind YG is absolutely known to fuck up artists voices. They were known as a hip hop label, they don't really have many vocal coaches that actually... emphasize singing. So a lot of YG groups don't have the most exact technique and rely a lot on their vocal tone to make up for it.

Yes to ballads no to belting. She is a mezzo-soprano so higher range notes are not so easy for her. She is not actually a good belter because she doesn't support. Lower range songs are her forté though. She's the best at it among BP.

you don't have to be a power vocal group to have impact and to sound good, that's the thing with blackpink. their voices give so much emotion and their vocal color and tone are so interesting that just gets you. as you said 3/4 of them has so much potential to even be better and higher. like imagine if yg utilizes jenchuchaeng's vocals to the max. even lisa sounds good for a sub-vocalist. for lisa and jennie to be trained in rap, they really do have decent voices. i really do hope yg gets them a great vocal coach/trains them vocally to improve, cus they're not even bad but a lot of things could be improved if they had more songs (because more songs = more vocal training/practices).

Jisoo edges Rose in terms of an extended lower range and falsetto/headvoice. Both are neck on neck on midbelts however Rose has better support in midbelts and upper belts overall. Understandably, Jisoo is a mezzo whereas Rose is a soprano which explains their range.

I have to agree with you: I think Lisa has a great range and a lot of potential, but she does not seem confident with her voice and hasn't been taught properly how to use it. I really like Jennie's tone, in my personal ranking she comes second, because it's a full voice, but it's not too heavy. I think because she's the main rapper, she hasn't developed her singing too much and she's not really confident either, but with a bit of training she could be really good. I like Jisoo, but as you mention, the pressure in the throat, the air and the nasality makes her sound weird to me sometimes. She's the most stable, but probably because all of her bad habits. If she fixes those, she'd probably be less consistent, but would sound much better. She has a unique heavy and husky tone, but needs to open her "internal mouth" to let it shine. Rosé is my bias, her tone and pronounciation drives me crazy. She's not a perfect vocalist, but I really do believe that she's a born singer, most of what she showcases is natural talent. If she gets a proper vocal coach she could be a great vocalist. In concert and in BP's japanese songs she showcases a heavier and fuller sound compared to the korean recordings; more open and overall a healthier placement, it sounds more natural. With that said, I think YG does not train vocally her trainees that much, they are quite weak. I guess they favor that YG hip-hop sounds and do not care about the vocal health of its artists. It's a shame, because these girls could do soooooo much better if they were taught how to sing properly, considering they trained for 4-6 years.

Jennie completely trained as a singer ...and while they are covering songs the english rap part was supposed to be covered by Jennie because she was only one fluent in English and YG found her talent and also trained as a rapper too....and she is the only one YG promoted as a singer and rapper before debut....one with GD and other with Lee hi... Hm I think I should not comment on this video (lol) aside from: 1) you really are too nice for this world, Sam. 2) I see that in your videos you talk a lot about potential and how idols will probably get better in the future, but as an old kpop stan I have to say that I can count in one hand the idols who have made substantial progress post-debut, and 60% of them were already good to begin with. Great video thank you!! I personaly don't agree on rosé potentially using a fake voice. To me the reason she sounds so different in her predebut clips is because she's singing in a much lower range than in any of her parts now in bp songs or recent covers. I'd like to point out that rosé was the only one accepted at her audition to yg out of ~500 participants and as she joined the compagny in 2012 she nearly debuted the same year. Given that I don't see why they would choose Her out of so many others and be ready to debut her right away if they wanted her to use a different style of singing or "fake voice". What mostly irks me about this argument is that by blaming all the vocal flaws rosé has on her company, we take away from her her capacity to make her own artistic choices when it come to her vocals. That technique she's using is sure imperfect but it's the one she chose, it might be the one she feels the most confortable singing with and the one she thinks she sounds the best with. So what? Singing is great because it offers such a variety of voices and as great as Whitney Houston sounded it'd be boring if everyone sounded like her. I agree. People try and push a fake narrative that YG forces her to sing a particular way but has anyone considered that rosé wants to and likes singing like this? All of her favourite artists that she looks up to in ways have similar stylistic choices to her. All she did was alter the style and technique she sings with but people like to call that ‘fake’. When she sang the Jonas brothers song Predebut her voice does not sound drastically different to today, I could pick out several moments where she was using the same technique and vowel adjustments as she does now

@Pinkii Lights idk I don't really see the issue for her on the long term cause she doesn't go too out of her range that often? like I'm more worried about all the vocalists who supposedly have a better technique but who are constantly straining their voices by trying to reach some impossibly high and long notes, and that's a thing Rosé rarely does (which then makes her an actual smart vocalist cause as Sam said she knows her voice and is aware of the limits of it)

Jennie seems a lot more comfortable doing lower notes than higher notes and she’s really good when she is comfortable so if Jennie does sing in the future I Hope YG takes advantage of that and stops trying to make her do higher notes when shes clearly not comfortable Edit: basing on ice cream Jennie seems comfortable doing high notes because she slayed them but my point about her doing lower notes still stands

If I remember correctly, Jennie once said that she wasnt really trained that much as a vocalist, because YG wanted her to be a rapper. To me it seems like after Blackpink debuted with less members than originally planned they made her a vocalist but they still arent properly training her so she just "wings it"(for lack of better words) and hopes for the best when singing. Dont get me wrong, I really like Jennie as a vocalist, but as someone who is self taught in singing, I feel like she runs into the same issues as me; being able to sing to a degree, but not actually knowing what you are doing from a technical standpoint.

I think people are starting to think Jennie is better than Jisoo cause of the recent album. The only reason why Jennie got more of the difficult lines in that song is cause she has better pronunciation and they had a lot of English songs and Jisoo isn’t fluent so it only makes sense to give Jennie more parts but when it comes to their songs in Korean Jisoo usually gets the difficult parts and sounds better e.g. LSG, you never know and their older songs such as D4, KTL, AIIYL and many more.

The thing with Blackpink is that even though they're not the best vocalist in k-pop, each member's voice is very unique and you can instantly tell when they start singing who it is. As opposed to other groups who are more vocally talented, their individual vocals are harder to tell apart. I still have a hard time telling apart Wendy and Seulgi from Red Velvet, and Jihyo and Nayeon from Twice (along with all the other members of both groups tbh).

I agree with Rosé being the 1 in the ranking because as Sam have said she knows how to use her voice, her tone is softer and prettier that the other 3 members's and she shows her voice and potential through covers she's made, I just think that the songs YG produce for them do not really suit her voice and technique. Jisoo is the member that've improved the most in terms of singing in my opinion, she became really stable and her singing is much more clearer and confident now and she proved her position of Lead Vocalist. Actually,all of them have great potential to improve but I believe that the thing is that Korean entertainment companies don't have good vocal trainers or perhaps they just don't simply invest in vocal training as much as they do with other aspects as BLACKPINK is not the only group that lack vocal training. I hope YG will work on their vocals and let them improve. BLACKPINK,fighting!💕

One thing Rosé should do is to lessen her nasality. She is a good vocalist. Best vocalist in BP. But there are times that being a stylistic singer is not good if you tend to forget proper vocal techniques. Its okay to be stylistic as long as she can back it up with a better technique. Yes she supports her notes. But she has a shallow support. If she remains singing with nasality, she might not reach her full potential which is a pity because she can be a great vocalist.

Rosé's voice fits very well with BP but I still think that it limits her. Her Masked Singer performance is the best thing I've ever heard from her. Also her cover performances show more of what she can do. I hope her solo stuff gives her more freedom. I just really love her voice, thats why there is only one vocalist in kpop I prefer, which is Taeyeon. ❤️ Jisoo's voice also seems to be underused or misused, her husky voice could be used so interestingly. I love her clarity and Yuki no Hana performance so much ❤️. Jennie's voice seems to be exactly what YG wants for them so he makes her sing a lot, which I don't get. She is a good singer no doubt, but if you hear her rapping, you feel like she should never do anything else again. That's probably also why I don't want to hear her sing too much. I want Jisoo and Rosé to sing and her to rap, it just doesn't sit with my preferences. Lisa's voice is surprisingly really nice to me. Sure she isn't as refined as the others even though she was supposed to be a vocalist. Her tone is very soft compared to her rapping and gives her a nice duality. I would really like to hear her sing more, also because it would balance out their rap distribution more, and it feels like a waste to have Lisa sing so little. Overall they are definitely not the best vocalists in terms of technique but they always manage to envoke so many feelings with their voices, which is what makes them stand out in this industry in my opinion.

i dont mind that bp doesnt focus as much on vocal technique compared to other group, bc if i wanted to listen to that kind of singing i would listen to red velvet or f(x). basically what im saying is that there are so many groups that you are bound to find something you like. i actually like lisa's tone the most and i like that bp singers are all unique, so i can ignore their limited vocal technique bc what they come out with is still enjoyable also, im surprised that i agreed 100% with what you said haha. jennie tends to overshout but i think her voice is most clear/straightfoward, i love jisoo's husky voice but it can get really nasal, and im not a fan of rose's tone but she def has the most control of her voice, she knows how to use it. i cant really criticize her bc it's only personal preference that i dont like her voice.
