IU is such an amazing singer, actress, genius composer and all around just an angel, but you need to see her in a live clip or concert to understand the deep of her talent. She'll just sing a song you already know, but you'll ask yourself o my gosh this is better than the MV, how could that be possible. She uses her own vocal support singers, her musicians and her amazing voice and control to give you a different yet seemingly better interpretation every time. Don't take my word for it, watch a live clip side by side the original MV.

What you said about knowing a singer has a really good voice, but they still surprise you...well, brace yourself (forever) because IU does that CONSTANTLY!!! She is the queen of surpassing everyone's expectations and always raising the bar. She always outdoes herself and doesn't ever miss. Tbh, I firmly believe that she doesn't get enough recognition for how incredible she is. It's seriously like she's an actual angel with heavenly powers or something. The amount of positive energy and joy that just pours out of her is unbelievable. When I discovered her, watching her just made me so happy that I went from a person who hated myself and hated life and wished I would die everyday, to someone who is happier than I ever thought was humanly possible and I love myself, I can see beauty in almost everything and I've never even once hoped my life would end ever since. If there's someone that beautiful and good in the world, then life is definitely worth living. I look forward to every day now and that's a gift she gave me. If you like pianos I recommend IU's "Secret" from her Last Fantasy album, which has many orchestral songs. Out of all of them, Secret feels really magical. I really recommend it. IU's does sometimes reference her old songs in her other songs, but you can still enjoy it. In Lilac, IU tell a story of 2 lover saying goodbye to each other, and about embracing the ending. This is an extended metaphor for IU saying goodbye to her 20s. The train in the MV shows the journey though her 20s. In the train station, you can see all the albums and singles she has realised in her 20s as platforms. In the second verse IU uses lyrics from her first major song "Good Day" and the small piano notes in the background are also from Good Day.

If you like the piano so much you should check out her song By The Stream with just IU vocals accompanied by the piano (by Jung Jaeil who did the soundtrack for the movies Parasite and Broker) and interspersed with the cello. These are her age series almost act as her diary that pinpoint and recorded her growth at age 23, 25 and 28. Supposingly the next one should be at her age 32 due to +2,+3,+4 sequence, yet korea government just change their age counting system, so her age 32 was delay due to this reason. Btw fyi a bit of TMI, there are two version of twenty-three/23, Twenty-three is her age series song, while 23 is an OST she sing for a kdrama The Producers where she is portrayed as an idol singer in the drama too, that's why she need to contribute an idol song for that role.

I discovered IU in 2015 when Catshire album came out and was just overwhelmed. I went looking and found the Modern Times album and listened to it non-stop for two weeks on You Tube. I was just floored. I had been listening to KPOP for about 3 years by then and Ailee had been my favorite soloist up until then. I have loved everything since then, except Strawberry Moon. It's the first song that never worked for me as it feels like it's missing something.

lilac mv - if you see the board at the start of the video, its the list of songs she release in her twenties to lilac (in her 30s), the song is about saying goodbye to her twenties and welcoming herself in her 30s... the guy on the MV who is holding a trumpet is the same guy that appeared on her MV for GOOD DAY (the song that made her the superstar IU today)

I am not sure if I mentioned this in my rather lengthy comment to your 1st reaction. In January of 2023 Rolling Stone Magazine released an update to their list of the Greatest 200 Singers of All Time and IU became the first Korean singer to ever make the list. Through the Night was written by her. She considers a remake of a classic Korean folk song, With a Determined Heart to forget You, to be Part 2 of Through the Night, I have included a link to IU's concert performance of that that song below. Spesking of that, you may already know that IU uses her songs to tell a story. Some of those stories span 2 or more songs. Lilac is a stand alone story of IU's journey through her 20's. Strawberry Moon, however coukd be consideref part 4 of a story started in 2011 with You and I, followed up in 2019 with Above the Time continued with Blueming. Strawberry Moon's story line fits in nicely with the other 3 bringing the story to a conclusion. I readily admint that the symbolism used to connect the other 3 songs isnt readily apparent in Strawberry Moon so those who want to say I am wrong have a point. By the way during her Golden Hour concert she sang this song while riding in a hot air balloon that travel around the stadium at the upper deck level. In the first video you asked what's the best order to listen to her songs, and the thing is that her music has to be listened to in chronological order to find a connection. Time and age is very important to IU, and she releases her albums according to the moment she is currently living. It's kinda hard to explain, but you should check out her "age welcoming songs". Lilac is one of them, it welcomes her 30's. IU writes her music like it's her diaries and if you watch in the right order you will be able to "see her growing old". Usually she has an album/Ep or single for each year or phase of her life, and I think you can find videos on KZbin explaining it. Some of the songs are 23 (for her 23th bday), Pallet (for 25th), eight (for 28th) and Lilac that welcomes the 30's and says bye to the 20's.
