IUPAC prefix and suffix

We can name the compounds based on the principal functional group and side chains present which are indicated by suffix and prefix respectively according to IUPAC rules. Sometimes few of functional groups like aldehyde can have two prefixes which can be used according their attachment to main chain. Carboxylic acid has top priority among the functional groups but still it can be denoted by a prefix whenever it presents as side chain.

sir, you have done the first example wrongly. do u know the rule that when 3 or more than 3 same functional groups are present then the carbon from the functional group isnt counted.

Exactly, but all the functional groups should be directly attached to the main chain. In the example given in video, there should be a methyl group in between main chain and carboxylic acid in which case carboxy is used as prefix. So it was corrected and the example was deleted here. Sir in example 3 the prefix of aldehyde is formyl not oxo it is the prefix of ketone.

Aldehyde will have two prefixes such as formyl or oxo. When the carbon of aldehyde is included in the parent chain then it should be indicated as oxo but when it represented as side chain we can use the prefix formyl. Hope it is clear now. Thanks for watching.

As we are considering HYDRAZIDE (-CONHNH2) as functional group it already includes ketone group in itself. So there is no need to indicate it again. Suppose if we consider it as HYDRAZINE (-NHNH2)then we have to show ketone in the name. But here we can't consider it as hydrazine because hydrazide is given more preference as principal functional group.
