IV Insert Technique Tip: Avoid Vein Valves if You See Them (Vein Check)
When starting an IV on a patient's forearm, you want to be mindful of any visible valves.
Granted, most patients will not have a low enough body fat percentage to see valves, but if they do, you can usually spot them by a knotty or bumpy appearance along the veins, as you can in this patient's forearm veins.
More IV tips: • IV Insertion Nursing T...
Vein valves prevent blood from backing up. If you ever want to test a vein to see if a valve is present, you can occlude part of it, run your finger along it, and blood will not refill into the vein behind the valve.
You want to avoid valves as much as possible because it can be difficult to slide off the cannula if you hit a valve, causing you to start over or risk blowing the vein.

In practice, out of perhaps the > 1000 IVs I've put up, I think I had issues with valves only several times. That was of course in my junior years as a med student, intern and junior doctor.

This is why you ought to lie down to give your heart a less stressful time to circulate the blood - when needed.

Very educational! If in a unit that allows, get certified and use an ultrasound and walk the needle all the way in to the catheter hub before removing the needle.. then you don’t need to worry about threading through a valve! (: saves hard sticks many pokes!

Do you need to avoid valves all the way from insertion point to end of cannula though? It's not always possible so wondering if I can't avoid one where's the best place to hit the valve

The truth is these are just a convenient excuse for people with poor IV skills. Unless you’re starting the IV in the wrong direction they offer no obstruction or resistance to the needle or catheter.
