Interesting that Lendl mentions Warren Bosworth at the end there. Bosworth was the absolute king in helping players scientifically select and tailor their racquets. There was one story of Lendl feeling that his game wasn't right because something was off with his racquet - he phoned Bosworth who asked him to hold the racquet up to the phone and tap the strings. He could tell from the noise that they hadn't been strung to the exact string tension needed.

McEnroe remains my favorite Tennis player to watch, but I'm also a fan of Lendl. Lendl's shot making here was excellent and quite unique to him. Seeing these two play was always an event.

I cannot believe that I watched that 40 years ago!

Was the tv that fuzzy back when we watched these matches? This is still a lot of fun to rewatch.

The first time Lendl defeated McEnroe in ‘85, in a powerful and dominating way, signaling the passing of the #1 player torch at the of the year.

Lendl had beaten McEnroe quite a few times before 1985, including a butt-whipping at the 1982 US Open. McEnore had the god-given talent, but Lendl was overall the better, stronger player. He won their career head-to-head against each other.

@@jamesmackinnon7727 Lendl was a new breed of power players that devoted a lot of his time for physical training that gave him the edge over Mac over the time. 1985 also saw the arrival of Becker at Wimbledon and then 5 months late Edberg at Australian Open. 1985 USO final was a decisive moment for Lendl and McEnroe, from that point Lendl established himself as the dominant player for the next two years until 1988. McEnroe stopped from being a major contender at the grand slams giving away to Wilander, Becker and Edberg.

McEnroe seemed to do a Borg after 1985 and stepped away from Tennis for half of 1986. After that he was not the same again (just like Borg's attempted return).
