Johnny Mac's tennis game was high theater. It was opera. Passion. Despair. Deceit. Courage. He had a wonderful, slicing serve... attributable, in part, to a curious sideways stance at the baseline. He was serve and volley all the way... always on the attack... putting immediate pressure on the return of service. Incredible net game, particularly his drop shots. He had such buttery hands! Phenomenal touch! Mac could nudge the ball just over the net, where it would just die, leaving his opponent no chance of getting it. Mac ran his opponents all over the place, with that wonderful drop shot and a fantastic lob, owing to his excellent spatial sense. There was really nothing he couldn't do. Maybe his backhand could've been a bit stronger, but pobody's nerfect. From 1980-1984, McEnroe was the greatest. He won 155 men's titles, between singles and doubles, and a bunch of senior's titles, too. Anyone who can't recognize that Mac was one of the most special players of all time is an idiot. So what if he was an asshole on the court? First of all, he was almost always right! Second, he kept the line judges and chair umps on their toes; they were used to making lazy calls until he came around. A bunch of fuddy duddies. How in the heck could you have sympathy for people who can't play tennis and the best the can do is say "forty - love." Mac was passionate. He went out there to win. He had killer instinct. Nice guys finish last in tennis. Connors was a total loathsome dick. Nastase was brash, cheeky, and sometimes downright rude. Djokovic can definitely be a jerk when he wants to. The idea of tennis as some gentleman's sport is ridiculous. Why should tennis players be any more gentlemanly than footballers, basketball players, etc.? People were just uptight back when Mac came up. After they saw how phenomenally he played, many of them came around. He's become an elder statesman in tennis now. People look back at his indiscretions and chuckle. He's smart as all hell and is top three among commentators of all time.

This outburst was always my favorite Mac rant. When he swept the ice with his racquet, the legend goes that the ice hit the King of Sweden (the chair umpire and Mac’s opponent that day, Anders Jarryd, dispute that story). Another underrated Superbrat moment was when he walked out of a 1981 Wimbledon press conference, resulting in a brawl between a British and American reporter. Classic!

Shame of it is that so many remember him for his outbursts. But the dude was a brilliant player. Had the greatest single season record of all time in 1984 of 82-3, which is just insane. He was a three time World Champion, won seven majors, and the list goes on. But you are only remembered for the worst of what you do if you give people a bad enough worst to remember. and he's an example of that.

While this 1984 incident in Stockholm is well known, even by the casual tennis fan, what a lot of folks don't realize is that McEnroe won this match and this tournament, which was his last of the year (he played two Davis Cup matches after this in December), and it capped off one of, if not THE greatest year of men's professional tennis, where McEnroe went a staggering 82-3 in matches (one of those losses was in the Davis Cup final), won FOURTEEN tournaments including Wimbledon and the US Open (he lost the French Open final, and didn't play the Australian), and went 12-1 vs. Jimmy Conners (6-0) and Ivan Lendl (6-1) who were the year end #2 and #3 ranked players in the world then (McEnroe was obviously ranked #1). The only years even in the same atmosphere that I can remember is Federer in 2004 to 2006 and Djokovic in 2015 (with apologies to Bjorg, who also had some very dominating years in the 70's). There are those who say Federer and Djokovic's dominance was even greater because the quality of opponents was higher, and I suppose you can make a case for that, but you can only play who's put in front of you, and for that shining year of 1984, McEnroe was as close to perfect as we've seen in modern age men's tennis.

Much as I can't stand her, I would make an argument that Serena got a whole lot of people watching tennis.

McEnroe was always devoid of any sense of civility or sportsmanship. The kind of guy everyone would tell their sons never to behave like.

John McEnroe won the Stockholm Open in 1984, marking his third victory at the event after previous wins in 1978 and 1979. In the final, he defeated Mats Wilander with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. McEnroe's performance in the tournament was notable not just for his victory but also for his behavior. During his semi-final match against Sweden's Anders Järryd, McEnroe was involved in a controversial incident where his temper flared, drawing widespread condemnation. Despite this, he managed to regroup and secure the win in the final against Wilander. This victory was part of a highly successful year for McEnroe, who ended the season with an 82-3 match record and 13 singles title
