I first saw Ivan ride in a British League match in 1973. My father told me to watch him, he's a winner. In my opinion he was probably the first truly professional speedway rider. Thanks for all the good times.

I first met and saw Ivan Mauger in action in 1963 or 64 at Brough Park Newcastle when He was a Newcastle Diamond . He was already a Top rider by then and went on to show the World what being a professional Speedway rider meant . King Ivan .

Great video, love the guy, he was my hero growing up, what a great role model, I think I have turned out something like him, and Peter Collins too, very humble, never too cocky. Always knew my limits, never suffered fools, gladly, always gave it my best, never tried too hard. Have sat astride a speedway bike, Sorens actually, at Cradley Heath, so sorry I never tried it for real.

He stayed at our house a few times in the late 90's when he was running the golden helmet races in my home town. Picked his brain for riding tips pretty much the whole time.

Ivan brought the World Championship troupe to NZ in 1985 - I was 16 and saw him race at Meeanee Speedway (second time, saw him race there when I was about 8 or 10). I just read below, Ivan brought the troupe to NZ in 1974 - that's when I first saw him ride. I took a book (that I still treasure - Ivan's Speedway Spectacular) into the pits to get his signature and he was tuning his bike as I approached. He stopped what he was doing and gave me a couple of minutes of his time, telling me to call him Ivan, not Mr. Mauger. 9 times World Champion stopping for a spotty 16 year old - not another soul saw him do that - a true Champion of a man. R.I.P. Mr Mauger.

We had him at the Murray Bridge Speedway Classic about 15 years ago. I had seen him in the pits in civvys then a little later heard a solo being ridden very hard an made a beeline to the track. A semi modern bike and rode so well. Made all the amatuers playing with their classics look slow. Though some were far from slow. I saw him race in his heyday at Rowley Pk speedway on numerous occasions. He was generally just a bit better than all the pros, got beaten on occasion but did win more than he lost
