0:22 This Film (And The Secret Of Kells In Part Because Vikings Actually Did Raid Ireland Like That) Is Based Heavily On Ancient Irish Mythology. Here's The Lyrics And The Meaning Of The Irish Phases Behind Them: "The Selkie Song Is Bright To Waken All Who Follow Manannán Will Lead And To Tír Na nÓg We Follow Dúlaman Na Binne Buí/Yellow Channelled Wrack Dúlaman Gaelach/Irish Channelled Wrack Dúlamán Na Farraige/Channelled Wrack From The Sea 'B'fhearr A Bhí In Éireann"/The Best In All Of Ireland A Selkie Is The Irish Version Of A Mermaid, They Are Often Seen As Bad Omens Leading Men To Their Deaths As They Are Often In The Form Of Beautiful Women On The Shoreline Dead, They Will Stay With The Men Sometimes For Years Until They Are Called Back To The Sea, With The Men So Enchanted By Them They Go Into The Water After Them And Drown. The Name Manannán Mac Lír/"Son Of The Sea" Is The God Of The Sea. The Isle Of Man In The British Isles Are Named After Him And The Triskelion On The Flag Is His Symbol. It's Said He Has 3 Legs To Quickly Scan His Kingdoms On Land And The Sea. Tír Na nÓg/"Land Of The Young" Is Like The Irish Pre-Christian Version Of Olympus In Greek Mythology. It's Considered To Be Part Of The "Otherworld" Where The Gods Rest In Eternal Paradise, Happiness And Festivity Without Sadness, Pain Or Death. Another Famous Legend With This Place In It Is "Oísin In Tír Na nÓg". The Next Part Is The Course Of A Famous Irish Song Called "Dúlaman". Dúlaman Is Irish For A Species Of Seaweed Called Pelvetia Canaliculata. It Was Salvaged From The Sea In Times Of Famine To Avoid Starvation. The Whole Song Takes A Play On A Young Man Trying To Court A Young Girl And Her Father Drives The Man Away As He Is Too Poor For Him. Hope This Explained This For You! :D

I don't think your Selkie lore is the same as the movie is based off of or the most traditionally held beliefs (though certainly there's that version of the Selkie tale somewhere, tis the nature of folklore). I'm not Irish or a scholar or anything, just an enthusiast who finds all her information online. In the more coventional Selkie lore I'm more familiar with (that is also the version held by Wikipedia, hehe, as well as what this movie is based off of), the Selkies aren't bad omens or malicious. They take can take the form of a seal or a woman (but never at the same time - they aren't mermaids with seal tails or anything of that sort). A man would steal a Selkie's coat and she would be forced to become his wife and stay with him. She might spend years with him, raising children and may even fall in love with him and love her children (or stare pensively at the sea and miss her home and/or her Selkie husband) until she finds her sealskin again and returns to the ocean (even if she loves her family, the ocean is where she belongs). She may never be seen again (except by her children, when she's in seal-form). Song of the Sea basically happened when the director looked at that lore and said "So..what happens to the Selkie's children?" The Irish mermaids, though often confused with Selkies and possessing slightly similar lore, are called Merrows and I think they're also not of the "lure men to their death kind", though I'm less familiar with Merrow lore and folktales. In short, what you said about Selkies isn't necessarily incorrect - just not correct, either, if that makes sense (again, folklore has a million versions). Dulaman (the original version) is a great song and ridiculously fun to sing.

Not a lot of grandparents do this...But I remember as a 4-year-old kid when my grandmother sang old Irish songs while knitting a sweater or clothing. Both of my parents worked and so I spent a lot of time with her reading dusty old mythical books and hear her tell folklore. Thinking about it...That is how myths and legends are passed on. Through our elders dreaming of the past and orally transmitting it to the younger generation.

WHY are they singing about seaweed
@fmor27797 жыл бұрын
Dulaman is an edible seaweed that kept villagers from starvation in times were there wasnt much food, it is eaten with potatoes and other vegetables. The song is about hope in times of shortage, they sing about how nice and beautiful dulaman is acompanied with a story about a young man trying to impress a young lady with presents as a metaphor. The verse can be translated to "Seaweed from the yellow clif, irish seaweed. Seaweed from the sea, the best in all Ireland"

Owls, you, owls, thanks for stoneing the fairies. Let me get this straight, I don´t hate them. I think they rule, they are good singers! And interesting mythological creatures. But when I first saw them, I was afraid. "Oh, the dumb characters, *sigh* okey..." but no, they didn´t say anything stupid, they weren´t dumb at all! They weren´t the Olaf/Maximuos/Gargoyles or anything like that. It´s only I´m kind of tired of those characters who are almost only for the children. Sometimes is only two or three words in the bacground, or none, maybe they just make faces or sing a little, okey. But some of them ruin moments. Olaf, no, Anna´s about to *freeze*, don´t rolle as a penguin, don´t yell of joy. Don´t make this nice, because it musn´t. Maybe I´m exaggerating, maybe I´m wrong, maybe I´m just the hater, but that´s how I see it.
@HayleyOtter7 жыл бұрын
Tarnia Book you arent wrong, in my opinion, the "comic relief" of childrens movies are the worst part. Such as the gargoyles in Hunchback of Notre Dame, they are a part of the original book, however they are only in Quasimodo's imagination (whereas in the movie its... questionable whether they are or not since they can interact with people..) and they offer him a sort of friendship and someone to talk to and express his thoughts out loud between multiple characters without being too goofy
@Frisby20077 жыл бұрын
Tarnia Book I have to agree. Comical relieve characters aren’t necessarily bad, but they essentially tell viewers this movie is more for kids than anything, and it almost insults the intelligence of other viewers. Like, this movie had no comic reliefs and it still had quirky humor and mature themes even kids could understand. Wish more American movies could see it that way.

I'd say they're more light-hearted than anything else. They move the story forward, rather than grinding things to a halt just for a catchy song or a funny bit. I love the way this movie is so very clearly kid-friendly but without talking down to kids or waving something shiny and distracting in their faces.

Frisby2007 yeah. The type of comic relief characters I hate are the ones who do nothing but slow down the plot and ruin things by being stupid (Sid the sloth, the deer from Open Season etc.) Sokka from ATLA is a GOOD comic relief character because he’s actually smart and not just there to slow down the plot with dumb jokes. Sure, he MAKES dumb jokes, but he’s competent and saved the other character’s lives with his smart thinking more than once. It’s more realistic that way too: just because someone is funny doesn’t mean they’re incompetent/an idiot.
