Matt is so personable and interactive that it's very entertaining. Even though he is able to interject levity into his battle walks he is able to drive home the carnage and death of the battlefield. By far the best Ranger making these videos.

They used to have a lot of tours of the Gettysburg battlefield on the PC and at work, and sometimes even on PBS. There are many ranger guides to whom I always listened when they were available and someone said he is very personable and really relates to the tourists coming there. He seems to be. Everyone interested in the different types of talks. I can well understand his reluctance to do school groups.

I know it interrupts the presentation but I love the way Matt engages with his audience. They love asking questions about the situation immediately and aren’t afraid to do so. That’s the mark of a good teacher, there are no bad questions, and he’ll give them an opportunity to ask them. On the subject of Waterloo in Belgium, the artificial mound was commissioned in 1815 nearly 50 years BEFORE Gettysburg. It’s a large conical artificial hill in the municipality of Braine-l'Alleud, Walloon Brabant, Belgium. King William I of the Netherlands ordered its construction in 1820, and it was completed in 1826. It commemorates the spot on the battlefield of Waterloo where the king's elder son, the Prince of Orange, is presumed to have been wounded on 18 June 1815, as well as the Battle of Quatre Bras, which had been fought two days earlier. It represents the Allied victory against Napoleon and isn’t a memorial to Wellington himself. It cost €40 million with the Lion on top and later to add the 226 steps to the top. It gives you a commanding view of the battlefield and is definitely worth visiting.

A few years back, I was on a Smithsonian tour of the Seven Days battlefields with Greg Clemmer and the great Ed Bearrs. They had a Q&A period during the bus ride back to D.C. My cousin asked them what is the best way to get younger folks and students interested in history. Both Greg and Ed enthusiastically answered with "tell a story to make it fun". Obviously, Ed Bearrs is one of the great story telling historians with his unique booming and dramatic style. Ranger Matt Atkinson is well on his way to being another great with his engaging down home and humorous style.

To borrow from R E Lee, if practicable, could you add in any overhead maps and movements as you follow Matt when he changes positions during the walk? It is hard to follow where the group is positioned each time the video stops and restarts as Matt has moved them to a new location. He points here and there, off left or right and says that is east or that is where the North Carolinians are wheeling and we, the video audience, have no real idea as to where you are and where he is pointing. This is especially true for folks that have never yet had the opportunity to be at Gettysburg in person. Thanks for your consideration.

Crowds and noise, the reason I go to Gettysburg in the fall after the kiddies go back to school. The last time I was at that part of the battlefield it was a bit rainy - remnants of a hurricane further south, but it was definitely better than dealing with crowds and noise.

A damn shame what happened to Iverson and O'Neal's brigades. But ultimately, wasn't it Rodes responsibility to ensure all the brigades stepped out at the same time and supported each other? Heck, If I was a division commander, I'd have a standard order for a routine deployment of brigades along a certain axis, and I'd drill the brigades so they knew how to deploy in a few minutes even in pitch darkness. And I'd also make damn sure that brigade commanders knew that their place was leading their men.

Ranger Matt mentioned in another presentation that the name Devil's Den predates the Battle. With what he joked about in the intro, "...dance...how many people were made." It's not a stretch then that the place was used for romantic interludes years before. Any local parson investigating scandal certainly could have given the area such a moniker.

I watched several battlefield tours on KZbin the last few days. Some tour groups are huge some are not. Do they ever limit the number of guests in a group? I should say those lead by the park rangers not the private tours?
@marosenmd294 Жыл бұрын
As best as I know there are no limits on tour size, from what I've observed they don't usually have to worry over #'s of attendee's. People come from every state and foreign countries to visit G'burg. I moved family from Metro-NYC area to Maryland, a 50 min drive from Gettysburg (60 min from Sharpsburg). Never moved again since, that was over thirty years ago.
