Hum Aapke Hain kaun? | Has It Aged Well? Ep. 05 | Ft.

Pass the cushion, hide those shoes and settle down with your pet pomeranian because we are talking about a film that's all about festivities - the 1994 smash hit 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!' and who better to discuss it with than someone who recently went through the rigmarole of marriage? Comedian (and recently turned husband) Aakash Mehta joins Abbas and Urjita and the panel is pretty split with Urjita recounting the pleasant family memories this film gave her, Aakash getting PTSD from Tuffy the dog, and Abbas hovering somewhere in between trying to decipher the politics of the movie.

Fun episode! Lot of valid hate 😁 Just one addition - the film is a remake of an earlier Rajshri film called Nadiya ke Paar, which is an adaptation of the novel Kohbar ki Shart. Both the novel and Nadiya ke Paar are based in a rural setting of a specific area (Bihar). So the practice/custom/way of life where the younger sister takes up the role of the deceased elder sister is taken from that background. (Of course this is not defending it, just an insight into why it is so). What happens with HAHK is for almost 70% of the film, the setting is urban and modern and it suddenly it becomes so traditional in just this one instance (of the brother-in-law and sister-in-law getting married for the sake of the child). Then it becomes a bit too much to digest and looks out of place. If you take the original material into consideration the picture becomes clearer.

There's a 1982 movie called Nadiya Ke Paar starring Sachin Pilgaonkar and Sadhana Singh. Hum Aapke Hai Kaun's story is a rip off of Nadiya Ke Paar.

I was conflicted during the episode. On one hand I was liking the fact that for once there's someone who didn't like the Titular film and was being critical of it. BUT throughout the episode I was saying, "They messed it up. They should have invited Zakir khan for HAHK." He adores this film. Watching HAHK in a packed theater was a wholesome experience. This movie broke the record of Disco Dancer (100 crore club record). I am totally on Urjita's side. This film is the product of its time (and value). I loved that film at that time.

this movie was a pretty accurate representation of India at the time. Sure the main focus is wedding shenanigans but its not even close to the diarrhea comment by Kuch bhi mehta. Akash tries tooooo hard to sound like a cinephile which he is faar from!

Mehta saab keeps contradicting himself ... What are the things you felt were impacted by HAHK -- He says Sangeet mein naachna.. Then he says I did not have a Sangeet on my wedding. I talked my way out of it... He seems confused. It is not very clear why he does not like the movie. He is unable to clarify himself.

I think you people are reading too much into the movie. The movie doesn't talk about anybody's career aspirations, Salman's aur Madhuri's. And the jiju-marrying-the-younger-sister after the old sister dies, is an actual thing that happens. This movie in its own way is trying to say that it shouldn't happen.
