Martha Argerich said it way back at his first Chopin competition: "He's a genius". Amazing pianist, eccentricities and all. Amazing sound, amazing technique, great imagination. Too bad his wife died, I think that has been unbelievably hard on him. I wish him the best, whatever he does.

Ivo was never the same after his wife died. He was present when she passed on, under circumstances which coulld rightly be descrbed as horrific.

Fascinating interpretation. I'm always amazed how many people believe they know Chopin wanted his music interpreted. At this point we are far removed from the performance practice and Chopin's instrument. This is a performance that works on its own terms.

What we see here is a phenomenon - not just performance. Below there is a reference to Horovitz.I was at the RFH in London for a concert with H. (As was the now King Charles III..). H was the concert. It was his presence. He could have played anything. He was the concert. And you knew it. The piano obeyed him. And the audience knew it. He knew it. It almost a though he walked onto the stage - looked at us with that smile - and then looked around, saw the piano almost saying - ah -there it is. And off he went. Phenomenon. You'll know it when you see a piano obeying it's master.

In Pogorelichs youth, he was a "Warrior Virtuoso", then as time creeped up on him, he became a more "Meditative Virtoso".. and now in his senior years, he is manifesting the "Sage Virtuoso" in his playing and public performances. Does anyone really know if in his private study practice sessions where he is the ONLY ONE to actually hear the musical sounds coming out of the piano, if in fact they are just like those sounds, tempi, sonorities, speed the public hears when he is in recital. Perhaps Pogo deliberately plays these works differently now just for that very reason, to give the audience a different musical perspective, a different musical architectural landscape as heard in sound. Artists can play mentally with their audience also, especially if they have a deep-seated sense of humour and deliberately want to send those critics off into a tizzy and a whirlwind of NEW COMMENTARY that they otherwise would not have the opportunity for. The last laugh is he who laughs best !! Pogo is laughing at all the "unwashed, unmusical, unclean and retarded deaf listeners.

In the days of Chopin, to write on the pentagram was not as easy as it is today. One can realize the meticulous work involved in writhing the thousands of notes conforming to the strict rules of Chopin's creative harmony, and it is difficult to imagine that he had intended for them to be played in a rushed blur of sounds. EVERY note has its weight in any musical masterpiece, and a Scherzo is no exception. The speed with which most outstanding pianists play this Scherzo is perfectly adequate. The speed Pogorelich uses in some passages transforms this artistic masterpiece into a finger exercise.

I am always shocked when I hear him play this . He has a logic 5hose with brains can find an hear. The contrasts and refined attacks gorgeous variety of piano sound is rare. Every nee pianist i hear has no to forte they don't know how to make a pp travel and fee can muster a FF . Teachers need to impress the importance of the sound . None of us notice the really deep invisible, metaphysical interpretative stuff. Listen to RichardGoode teach and one realizes the most obvious musical ideas 8n the oldest mydicBeethoven rarely comes across!

I'd like to know Pogorelich's reasoning for some of the blazingly fast passages, which to my ears don't sound very musical. So many of his performances are absolutely brilliant because of his creative genius, but this one is a bust, IMHO.

at 4:41 is likely to bring out the LH melody, and to draw a different mood out of it, certainly a mood more fitting of the title "scherzo." im not sure if i personally like it yet, its so different, but it at least seems to be a proper artistically justified choice and not just vulgar showboating. will give a few more listens to see how i feel.

I adore Pogorelich, but I can't like this Scherzo at all. It seems to me that Pogorelich's research on (let's say) the "meaning" of the notes consisted on pushing them to their dynamic&speed limits. This inevitably transform any expression into a sort of mask, any human face into a Bruegel face or an Utamaro face. This approach can be enlightening many times, like Pogorelich's "revelations" of Chopin's 2nd Sonata, or Ravel, or Skrjabin. But here his method doesn't work: all the potentially enormous amount of nuances and intentions of this composition's palette are squashed, flattened into a black/white or rock/air polarity.

The painful thing about this is that Pogorelich clearly CAN do anything he wants to do technically, and musically, and is in that sense one of the very greatest pianists alive or dead. The problem is WHAT he wants to do technically and musically. This performance is a miserably unmusical, speeding, banging car wreck. Others are so slow that the music seems twice its length and the phrases lose any cohesion or sense. I've never understood how someone so massively gifted can deliberately CHOOSE to play so badly.

... Think of it as part of a program. He didn't go there and just play this Scherzo. How he plays it is going to depend on what comes before and after, and how he wants the audience to feel. He's there to deliver a musical performance as a whole concert, not just the one piece. There were already plenty before him that played it as an overly romantic and soppy piece. This is not necessarily a bad way to play it, but even Liszt in his time was sick to death of hearing the piece.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but I think it's baloney. A performer has to interpret the marks a composer puts on the page, that's his job, but not to IGNORE them in the service of some idea of his own about building an effect into a program. If you want to do that, then write your own stuff. Don't twist and torture the work of others to stoke your own aesthetic ideas.

Why not, though? Plenty of others have played and recorded the piece in more traditional ways already. Chopin is long dead and not attending the concert, and somehow, I doubt he'd have been particularly offended anyway. How is it so outrageous to suggest playing it differently?

It IS outrageous to do such violence to Chopin's work when you're perfectly capable of understanding and executing Chopin's instructions. Look, if you want to go that far outside any interpretation that could possibly be justified by the marks Chopin put on paper, then, as i said, write you own stuff. Make it a Fantasie or Variations on Chopin's Scherzo BY Pogorelich, but don't play like a lunatic and then CLAIM you're playing Chopin's music. This is far different than a rank amateur making an attempt at Chopin and failing though lack of technique or musical understanding. Pogorelich knows exactly what he's doing, but whatever THAT is, he shouldn't call it Chopin. Incidentally, the only thing that drives me crazier than truly talented musicians being completely unmusical, is two people who carry on a flame war on a thread like this. So in the interest of sparing everyone else an endless stream of increasingly hostile commentary, this is it for me. I think I've explained my position very clearly. If you disagree, so be it.

I don't think so. His ""decline"" was after his wife Death. And the studio recording of scherzos are from 1998 I think and are "better" than this. But Imo this recording is amazing specially the Coda. I think a pianist can change his interpretation from one stage to other and that doesn't make it worst or better. We are judging a nice moment that happens just at that moment and On a KZbin recording is far different from the feelings happened live. That's the magic of the music

Scherzos don't want to be very romantic either way. they are joking pieces and pogorelich is defenitely showing how jokingly ''easy'' this piece is with his interpretation. It's genius.
