I think Ivo has always OWNED this piece. He got its meaning, which is not a flashy virtuoso piece. Is a majestic and also melancholic legacy that the composer got from his beloved country, Russia. As such, its meaning raises above piano pyrotechnics. I think Ivo has always known that, and you can tell that, from this and many performances of this work 👏🏻👏🏻.

The high standard that guards the worlds best musician is rather unforgiving sometimes, and pogorelich is one genius who didn’t comply with the rules. His refreshing interpretations is a shock to many people. I’m so sad that he’s in this state now after the death of his wife. It annoys me when people criticise him of using sheet music. Ignoring the fact that memorised repertoire only became a thing because of Liszt. A musicians capabilities shouldn’t be criticised even if they choose to use sheet music. Bravo pogorelich
@DJStefandeJong3 жыл бұрын
Whilst Liszt is my favorite composer for piano I dislike the fact he caused this memorised repertoire thing ... if you don't have to focus on remembering something flawlessly you can do much more with the music in terms of interpretation which Pogorelich is showing time and again. Richter also mostly played from sheet and he is also considered one of the all time greats.

If you cannot bear witness to the genius at work in this man, you know not of the power of Music to transcend the trials and tribulations of a life that has known heartache unlike most, and brought to stricken mind a measure of divine healing. Pogorelich is one of the greatest musicians of our time. Even at his most idiosyncratic of moments, he resonates Truth and Beauty because his is a soul steeped within the moment of its own being, whilst ever being at the mercy of the moment. I have learned more about the varying sonorities of but one note from his musical mind, than I have from any pianist of the 20th century and present day. He resonates such worth, however wayward the extremes. He is to the world of piano what Rudolf Nureyev was to ballet. A necessity that sees his art form survive through simply being who he is. I love him!

I knew M. Pogorelich well when he lived in London in the late 80's and 90's. I went to many of his concerts with him and witnessed possibly the most brilliant pianism I've ever seen (the Carnegie Hall 1990 and 1992 examples stand out as utter perfection where one was pushed back into the seat by the sheer power). These videos do him no justice at all. In this one he can certainly still play all the notes well, but the musicality and thread is nowhere to be seen. Compare this to the 1992 Carnegie Hall video and it is quite appalling. People are going to see him for the spectacle of a pianist who is a shadow of his former self rather than a complete artist now
@Maisiewuppp4 ай бұрын
Still running rings around many a renowned artist, though. Always worth listening to. Don’t be so negative. Look at the comments. The communication with the listener is absolutely front and centre. That’s the point of performance.
@petergolding57334 ай бұрын
@@Maisiewuppp I wasn't being negative - I was telling the truth. He simply cannot play well anymore. He has totally gone off the rails - he himself said that when he saw Horowitz perform in Japan, it was like a beautiful vase that had unfortunately cracked in many places. That is now what he is like. I have no wish to go and see Ivo play now - I will cherish my memories of the many times I saw him when he could play well - probably better than anyone I ever saw (and I saw Horowitz, Richter, Gilels, Argerich and many more)

That's exactly what it is. He played it years ago and is coming back to it. Now he is rediscovering the piece all over again. Pogo hands are giant, strong and slender, a miracle. This performance may seem strange to those who blast through Islamey to beat the fastest time... But this is one of the most musical Islameys out there, by a (very) long way. Pogorelich played it ultrafast in his twenties. For sure. But this is more spacious, breathable; slow overall but not so slow in the toccata sections, unquestionable musicality and a granite determination.

Today with these performances of virtuosic and tiring pieces, the undoubted technical and physical resources of the time having ceased, the said hidden limits appear in all their evidence behind an alleged softer and more lyrical but also very presumptuous reinterpretation ... in fact the audience applauds and we'll have to get over it
