He explain at 8:30 that this stradivarius ( from 1713 ) is very fragile and sensible to the change of temperature variations ( humidity / cold principally) and the wood of the fingerboard can inflate with the consequence to modify intervals between the notes, especially in the high area of the fingerboard, so this piece of wood is placed here to protect this problem, sorry for my english, I'm french, I hope I'm clear : - D
